Nintendo Announces 3D DS Successor

Backwards compatible system to display 3D visuals without the need for special glasses.

Nintendo announced today a successor system to the DS, tentatively named "Nintendo 3DS." The system will be properly unveiled at E3 in June and will go on sale in the coming fiscal year.

As indicated by the name, the 3DS will allow users to experience games in 3D. The 3D effect will be visible using the naked eye, without the need for glasses.

Nintendo's announcement made the point that this system is a successor to the current DS line. It will be backwards compatible with the DS, including DSi.

The current DS line, which includes the original DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi LL (XL overseas) has sold 125 million units as of December 2009, Nintendo noted in its announcement.
