Question Of The Month Reader Responses: Issue #232

A few months ago we asked readers if they are ready for a new generation of video game consoles. While most respondents hope their next console purchase is still a few years off, some are ready to start the future of gaming today. Here are some responses.

What's The Hurry?:

  • I don't think it's a good idea to create new consoles given that there are new games already coming out for the consoles we have now. When things start getting slow and everyone is playing the same thing over and over, it will be the perfect time to bring out something new and everyone will be interested.

  • I'm not ready for the next round of consoles. I only just bought my Xbox 360 six months ago with allowance money that took me forever to save up. Unless the next Xbox can play 360 games and the PlayStation 4 has the same Vita connection (I’m saving up for a Vita now) as the PS3, I think I'll wait for the next groundbreaking development in gaming before I add more consoles to my overcrowded entertainment center.

    Kaitlyn Petrie
  • I don’t think I am ready for next gen. In fact, I really don’t see the need just yet. Besides having a Blu-Ray player, I don’t think there is anything the next-gen Xbox has to offer that makes me unable to enjoy any upcoming games. Plus, it would be a darn shame to lose all the progress that we gamers have made in the last eight years on achievements and multiplayer.

    Mike Mallengar
  • Am I ready for a new round of consoles? Certainly not! My PS3 is still working perfectly fine and there is still a whole lot of PlayStation 3 games that I am looking forward to play. So paying another $300.00 just to play the next generation of games is out of the question.

    Tony Massaroni
  • I do not think I am ready at all for a new round of consoles and neither are the companies that are tasked with making them. I mean, I understand that sales are going down year by year because people who already own systems have no need to buy a new one. They need to stir the market and increase sales by splurging millions on new systems. But right now you still have new experiences coming out in this generation, and projects that are still more than a year out like Tomb Raider and GTA V.

Ready And Waiting:

  • Right now I am excited for news about next-gen consoles, because I know that new consoles can only improve AI and graphics, which will lead to more complex and realistic games. Some people are not ready because they say the new consoles will be too expensive, but if they wait there will be a price drop and by that time more games will have been released for them.

    Spencer Wilson
  • I am excited for the new consoles because they create new games and usher in better gaming. And when the new consoles of today become the old ones, I'll still keep them and enjoy them; the point of the new consoles is not to replace the old, but simply increase the entertainment for us, the gamer.

    Lee Walsh
  • I’m ready for the new consoles. I say it’s time for virtual reality. Saving the universe from a Reaper invasion on a high definition television is fun, but imagine how much better it would be to feel like you’re actually there, living in the moment?

    Brady Dunlop
  • I’m about ready for a new round of consoles because I want to see what new hardware will allow for game development. The Witcher 2 looks good on Xbox 360, but could it have run better if the hardware was more powerful? I also wonder if mods would be possible on new consoles too. I have Skyrim for the consoles only because my PC isn’t powerful enough to run it, and it’s hard not to envy the mod community that exists for computers.

  • I am ready for a new round of consoles. I am ready to give Nintendo a new chance at redemption (and an attempt to catch up), and to maybe give this fan boy a reason to be proud to call himself one.

    Jordan Brown
  • Am I ready for new consoles? Well yeah! The Wii was lame, so hopefully the Wii U will be better (and have a new name ). I have seen some supposedly leaked PS4 trailers, and it looks awesome. And apparently the Xbox 720 is going to know who you are just by picking up the remote? That is just awesome.

    Tristan Donnally

The Nintendo Exception:

  • I am definitely not ready for new consoles, besides the Wii U. I am a PS3 gamer and I think it is great the way it is. Technology hasn't even caught up to the PS3's capacity and it still works great. Sony can still come out with software updates to improve flaws in the system. Microsoft could possibly use another system, but if Microsoft made a new console I feel like Sony would come out with a competitor. Nintendo is pretty far behind the game, so I feel they are justified releasing an HD console. Other than that, the world is not ready for new consoles.

    Noah Siddoway
  • Am I ready for a round of new consoles? Sure! On Nintendo's part, of course. I personally think Sony and Microsoft should wait another five years; most find it much too expensive to keep up with today. $60 a year for Live and rumors of it going up again? Yeah, no thanks.

    Tatjana Vejnovic

The Doomsayer:

  • In all honesty, I fear the next round of consoles will bring about the next video game industry crash. A new generation of hardware is likely to challenge console makers to the breaking point in their ability to deliver more powerful hardware at a price point consumers will accept, and software producers to bring games to the market that utilize the power of the new generation (read: higher overhead on every title) without raising prices.

    Benjamin Kuhner

Still Growing Up:

  • I am not ready for new consoles. I am still young and have only recently been able to play T-rated games, let alone M-rated games. I want time to play older games before I feel pressured into getting a new console.

    Matthew Hopper

Don't Mess With My Controller:

  • Totally not ready for new consoles because of more controller differences. I’m so used to the Xbox 360 controller. I can finally use two thumbs at once! Plus, exclusive titles mean buying a new console just for certain games. Why do you think I have an Xbox? Halo! I think they should create more games for existing consoles.

    Shelby Murphy

Make Up Your Mind:

  • In a way I am ready for new consoles, but on the other hand, I'm not ready for them. I think that it's going to be amazing when they do come. The things that make me say no are all these rumors about no used games and how you might have to be online to play. Plus, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 still do a great job.

    Matthew Prestage

What's New?:

  • I don't see what new consoles would do differently. The current consoles already have games that track weight loss, use a 3D display, and even games that don't require a controller. That's what companies want, a new hook. A console that does something different. And with the available technology, I really don't see where else Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo could go.

    Seth McCall

Straight To The Point:

  • New consoles?! I’ve hardly gotten use to the current ones...

  • I am ready only if costs stabalize. Some of those comments are so stupid they are good for a laugh

  • NOT READYY!!!!!!!!

  • I feel like this gen is just hitting its stride. We have a couple more years, at least, before we need new consoles, no? We're seeing some real robust engines/graphics coming out now. That new Anvil engine for AC3 looks gorgeous.
  • I'm SO ready for next gen!!! You samingtons guys are acting like luddites! Gimme tomorrow today! Technology is way beyond what PS360 tech. stop living in the past and allow for newer/better.
  • @ the 2nd to last entry - "What's New?"

That is sort of directly on point and simultaneously missing the point. Companies may want a hook, sure, as yes, they sometimes create buzz which generate sales. The core game community, however, is much more difficult to fool. We just want more - is that so much to ask? Give me more options: more power to show much enemies on screen; more power to have cpu mindshare to devote to improving AI; more power to make the animations silky smooth; (even) more power to have incredible physics. Give us more ways to play our games: give us the ability to host games from our own systems (ala-PC)

To further my point of more options, if we release new consoles the old ones aren't simply going to disappear. Those who wish you stay on the old systems can certainly do that. Just look at how long the PS2 was supported after the PS3 came out. However, those of us who deem ourselves ready for the next set of hardware will have that option. Why are some of you trying to selfishly prevent us who ARE looking forward to the next round of hardware from enjoying it? Party poopers!
  • I'm never ready. I'd rather hang onto my money... Dropping several hundred for better graphics... yay? It's not quite the same as it was going from 8-bit on up.
  • Yeah, I agree with those that say that Nintendo needed a new console. As for the others, no. I think we already pushed this need for graphics far enough, and that is why it is so expensive to make games nowadays. Besides, the only gaming-related group I see pushing for next-gen is Ubisoft.
  • I'm not ready. I don't see what Sony could do differently. Microsoft, besides Blu-Ray, also can't do much different. But Nintendo, yeah, they need a new console.

  • i agree with the "dont mess with my controller". i hope they have the same one for next gen xbox. in fact, that and halo were the only reasons i went with xbox over ps3.

    xbox controller is awesome

also, i hope they give you the option to buy wired controllers. i dont like or trust wireless ones

  • Nintendo: I'm ready for. Update the graphics, better motion controls, keep the controller nearly the same (it was easy to grasp), don't make me do dances just to get my guy to do one attack/punch/whatever

Microsoft: Not ready at all. Just mainly one thing, fix all your dang console problems! I've gotten so many dang errors from my xbox's and have to had to trash two of them! Both of them a type of red ring (1 and 4)

Sony: I'm not ready for. I can't give much here since I don't have one so....
  • New Consoles sure, but if they make used games unavailable, and force online to play, I'm switching to PC. Sure you have to deal with annoying DRM, but now theres no difference. I love my xbox and chatting to my buddies online, and if they keep LIVE at the same price and keep games that way too, they'll have my business.

As far as the Wii U, once they release a decent Metroid and LOZ will they see a Wii U off the shelf in my name.

  • I'm so ready.  I didn't buy a Wii, but if I can get my hands on a Wii U before the next Xbox or Playstation comes out I'm all over it.  I've had a 360 since day one and it's been great, but I'm ready for some new tech even if it's just a slight improvement.

  • All this talk of sticking with consoles that are over 5 years old is killing me! This new generation of gamers is absolutely baffling. I understand money conservation, sure, but to NOT want a console company to come out with something new and more advanced makes NO sense to me. They won't just abandon the consoles you're apparently hand-cuffed to now. If you cant afford it yet, thats cool, let those who can buy new consoles get them. Enough with the "if i can't have it, no one can" mentality. I fear that all the whining is going to scare these companies away from releasing new hardware soon, so stop it! lol.
  • If a console comes with new Mario and Zelda games, I'll be ready for it.
  • I dont see the point yet. As many have said before the Xbox and PS3 still have life in them yet. Why make a new console? What outstanding innovation could Microsoft and Sony bring to the table that isnt there already (that is realistic for our time)? Sure they can bring new power for better gamplay (coop Elder scrolls anyone?) but that would jack up the price to that of a high end gaming computer

Nintendo though. Yeah they need a new console. The Wii was fun it appealed to a lot of casual gamers and some hard core gamers too but they need to get on par if not surpass other consoles. They need to get more third party, a more universal controller (like the pro controller), HD graphics (even though I prefer gameplay to graphics), better online, and they are bringing a new type of gaming (multiple unconnected gameing screens).
  • I'm only ready if I can transfer my hard drive data to the next Xbox.
  • You know, I would expect that the people who are subscribed to a videogame magazine would know what next gen can provide, but seeing this opinions is baffling. Apparently most of them didn't read the Unreal Engine 4 article you guys posted. Those that are saying that Microsoft and Sony should wait 5 more years before they launch a next console are plain crazy. You are telling me, that we should stick 5 more years with 2003-2004 technology? Are you serious?
  • I welcome a new console, I love new stuff.  The ps3 still has the most left in it in my opinion. Nintendo def needs a new one question will it be a new generation console or really just catching up that remains to be seen. Xbox still has a lot to offer I believe but mine has been collecting dust for sometime now.

  • Yes, we need new consoles desperately.

  • I think most gamers would prefer the new console discussion to just go away. No one wants to think about the upgrade in terms of how much it will cost and whether that cost will be worth it. I play on PlayStation 3. I see no reason why it cannot continue to deliver quality gaming. Every 1st party game I play on it looks amazing. I realize the hardware design is a bit tougher on development teams and my 3rd party, multi-console titles never look as crisp as games like Killzone 3, Gran Turismo or Uncharted 3...but I can deal with it for another few years. I just wish they would integrate voice command functionality like I have heard about in some Xbox titles via Kinect. I use a mic and if I didn't my PS Eye has one. For Xbox players...the majority seem satisfied. But if I was one I would definitely be wanting a blu-ray. Nintendo needs to get with the times and they need to expand to the core gamer scene for real. I know they sold a ton of Wii's but what about software? Their casual gamers all moved on to mobile platforms like smart-phones and tablets while their Wii's collect dust. And now they know what a waste of $$ it was for them. Those folks are not going to upgrade to a Wii-U regardless of the gimmicks they come up with. Time to get real Nintendo.
