Moments: Solid Snake And Revolver Ocelot Go Fisticuffs

*Spoilers Ahead*

The Metal Gear Solid series is one of the most revered in video games. The gameplay is solid and fun, the story is crazy and tugs at your heartstrings (unless you are some kind of robot), and the set piece moments are second to none. Leading up to the final confrontation with Revolver Ocelot/Liquid, Snake has the tar beaten out of him for over half an hour. He even crawls through a hallway that generates microwaves. He is literally cooked from the inside out. But it is worth it in the end because he finally accomplishes his mission and the game ends.

Except Snake still has some unfinished business with his old nemesis.

The battle that ensues encapsulates the previous three games and takes place in a cinematic style that brings out the numerous emotions that run through it. Sadness, confusion, old age, determination, nostalgia, revenge, anger, honor, all of these are brought out and enhanced with the terrific soundtrack by Harry Gregson-Williams and the visceral animations. This sequence really doesn’t pull any punches (pun not intended).

Look, I was being serious about the spoilers ahead thing earlier. If you have not played through the Metal Gear Solid series, there are some major spoilers in the videos below. Do yourself a favor if you have missed out and buy the HD collection for the system of your choice. You won’t regret your decision.

  • jack thank you for reminding me of an awesome if not the most epic moment in gaming, and you gave me the videos to watch too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who really enjoyed this moment

  • This moment was so good and just a great conclusion between the two of them. Also there is a great easter egg in this fight if Ocelot completes a grapple on you for the first time he will give you a nice little kiss on the cheek.
  • Great moment, Jack!

This fight is probably my favorite moment in gaming history. I grew up with Solid Snake and the Metal Gear series. This fight right here was full of so many emotions my first time playing it, and the emotions just kept coming right after this scene.

I may not like everything story-wise in Metal Gear Solid 4, but whenever I get to the final fight, I'm always reminded of my journey with Snake, Raiden, Gray Fox, Ocelot, Liquid, Big Boss, and the rest up to that point, and it always feels so good going through this series.

  • Epic Grandpa fight

  • One of the most awesome final sequences ever done. I know, people will sit there and say, "But it's just a fistfight." But if you've invested the time and the heart into the character of Snake, you know this is the last, biggest moment of his life. And the payoff is phenomenal. I especially love the music in this section. Powerful, rousing, emotional and tense. All this personifies Metal Gear Solid and what it's about. Awesome!
    And First!

Edit: Okay, maybe not first. Sorry.
  • "You're pretty good...  but you're not the best."

What a fantastic moment in a video game. Where the pieces all fall together and you realize the villain you've been fighting was the secret hero, desperately trying to break the cycle he had helped create through good intentions gone awry. Hideo Kojima is renowned as the king of wacky plotlines and over the top characters, but he delivered with the ending to MGS4...  as long as you ignore the whole Meryl subplot. Seriously, that was ridiculous.

  • Best choices of music for a fight like this!
  • I loved the fact that you could kick Liquid's ass while listening to my favorite score in the history of video games at the same damn time. Also, has anyone else noticed that the first two out of the three moments in this new feature have been from Metal Gear?
  • I loved MGS on PSOne.  After some of this years games, I may have to pick it up.

  • One of the very few good things about MGS 4.
  • well its about time for another play through for this game

  • Playing any of the Metal Gear Solid games is a great moment in its self.

  • MGS is full of great moments but this is definatley one of my favorites. Thats why Im kinda mad that they keep rolling out new MGS titles this was a perfect end to the MGS series it answered basically every question and put everything to rest. I wish Konami would allow Kojima too make another amazing new series Also my personal favorite moment is the fight with The Boss at the end of MGS3. She is the best character in video games and that last battle and how it makes you pull the trigger to end her life is the most moving moment in gaming.

  • Took me hours to BEAT!  GREAT game.

  • Who doesn't love MGS? (Nobody answer, or I'll sick Raiden on you.)
  • The first time I played this I got chills. SO, SO, SO GOOD. Love this series. Right when Snake Eater theme kicks in, holy ***. No game has ever done that to me before, nearly bringing me to tears, and I'm hardpressed to think of a series today that could pull it off.
  • MGS 4 is one of the reasons I wish I bought a PS3...
  • I played through MGS way back in the day, and loved it.

Never could get into the second one, though... and never played 3 or 4.  Haven't ever really gotten the urge to jump back into the series... maybe someday.

  • Huh! Huh-huh-Huh Huh AWWWWH!! SNAKE!!!! No! Huh-huh-huh-her-huh-huh Awww! Take this Awwh! What the--! Ough! ERRAAAAGH!!!
