After a slow year for camera phones in 2010, smartphone manufacturers have paid particular attention to the camera features this year. Apple continued to set a high bar with the 8-megapixel camera and backside illuminated sensor in the iPhone 4S, and HTC followed suit with the same technology in the Evo 3D and Rhyme.

But the king of the cameras in 2011 has to be the Samsung Galaxy S II. The GS2 performs superbly under a range of lighting conditions and avoids many of the common pitfalls we see with these tiny lenses and image sensors. Some might argue that the post-production algorithm Samsung uses is a bit heavy handed, pumping up colours to the verge of being unrealistic, but we think this is one of its many strengths.

its not the amount of megapixels, its the quality of the optics.

Apple continued to set the high bar? 8-megapixel cameraphones have existed since 2008, when the LG Renoir was released in Australia. This article has been nothing but biased towards Apple.

biased towards apple? are you kidding me?
it says samsung galaxy S2 is the king of camera phones, but i own both GS2 and 4S and find the iphones camera superior.

also, its the quality of the optics that matters, not the amount of megapixels really.

Pretty dissapointing article Joseph. Apart from providing a little blurb about each phone, you don't take real life comparisons of each phone under the same conditions to show their strengths and weaknesses under different conditions. How can this article have any credibility without such a comparison. I would of been satisfied if you had just reposted an article from CNET USA showing such a comparison instead of the article provided above

Shame you didn't look at the HTC Mozart, it's an 8MP Camera with Xenon Flash .. better than most listed here...

8 or 12MP and a Xenon flash never guarantees excellent image quality. The phones listed above took the best photos during our review process.

That said, the Mozart was very close to making the list. I do like the look of the photos it takes.
