Cool or Tool: Ascots

Wrapping a silk scarf around your neck may be akin to strangling your style.

January 4, 2010

Blame it on Ashton Kutcher. After elevating the trucker hat to haute headgear, the A-lister is now out to strip the ascot of its aristocratic heritage and make it a tie for the masses. Tie Bar recently launched an ascot collection, and silken scarves have appeared around the necks of Justin Long, Brad Pitt, and Nick Hoult. The Adam's-apple sheath may seem like a way to make you look smart and sophisticated. But the results are often stupid and clumsy. While Kutcher has mastered the subtle reveal—just a ripple of silk from under a shirt—others, like Joshua Jackson have gotten all tied up. If you think you have the balls to stick your neck out, go for it. But be warned, as Domenico Dolce says, "only royals should wear ascots."
