Moments: Vs. Pkmn Trainer Red

When asked what some of our favorite moments in gaming are, most of us probably wouldn't think of Pokemon.

The series, one of Nintendo's flagship franchises, is known for its cute, bubbly, collectible characters and bright environments. However, there is one moment in Pokemon history that really stands out as being impressive, awe-inspiring, and momentous: The final battle in Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal.

Unlike most Pokemon games, the second generation titles allowed players to backtrack through their old haunting grounds (the Kanto region). On top of that, players could battle the first generation protagonist, Red, in one, final, all-or-nothing fight.

Red, being our previous character from the past (figuratively, of course), packs quite a punch. The player in the video below makes the battle look easy, but in reality, leveling up in the second generation games took a long time, and it was very unlikely that someone would go into Mt. Silver, where Red was hiding, with a team of Pokemon all at level 70 or above. One of the commenters on this video said it best: "Red let you win."

What made this moment particularly impressive was the fact that players were battling against an incredibly strong version of themselves. Red, uttering no words and disappearing instantly and mysteriously after the match, left us with the impression that we had literally conquered our former avatars and that our ties to the first, nostalgic generation had been permanently cut. Few games – especially games that are otherwise known for their superficial treatment of metaphysical issues – allow for such a reflective and otherworldly experience.

  • I must not be a pokemon fan then.

  • The single greatest moment in my life of gaming.
  • That last little bit sure was deep, Ali.
  • I loved this moment so much. Trekking through the caves of Mount Silver to come across Red. And the battle that ensues is possibly one of my favorite fights in any RPG. It's also worth mentioning that Pokemon Silver is one of my favorite games ever, holding a special place.

  • This moment still gives me goosebumps. Playing your past self defined what an epic moment in gaming was for me.

  • Pokemon Crystal. 'Twas a great game.

  • This moment was completely surreal when I first encountered him.....Awesome. Gold & Silver remain the best Pokemon games to this day.
  • This blew my mind when I was a kid. This was amazing, I'm so happy that I found this. Silver is my favorite pokemon game of all-time.

  • this guy was a pain in the ass.
  • I just can't wrap my head around why adults still buy and play this watered down children's crap(don't try to tell me that Pokemon is complex, I have over 8 cousins that are under ten years old, and they play these games with ease)!
  • i want remake of the original red/blue/yellow in a 3d environment. i love the original 150 Pokemon, but have no interest in anything after that.
  • How I beat Red: Level 90 Typhlosion.... Rollout. All pokemon dead within 30 seconds..... umm... okay then :D
  • This is hilarious! The guy uses the EXACT same line-up I used with the exception of Dragonite.

  • I remember being a lot less prepared for that fight. I have actually never given it a lot of thought, but yah it was pretty sweet. A very satisfying final fight to be sure

  • This is amazing.

  • To this day, the 2nd generation is still my favorite generation.
  • Single greatest accomplishment of my childhood is beating Red.  Took me a few tries as at that time I was a rookie gamer and had one high leveled Pokemon.

  • This was my favorite game as a kid, as I played it to death. Heck, I still don't mind trying it every now and then.

  • It was a great shout-out to the first gen, which I'm sure meant as much to others as it did to me. What's greater than ascending the toughest place in the land just to find the guy you helped become the greatest trainer in the world? Even better than coming across Gary/Blue in Viridian... I think came across it without having it spoiled online or anything. Can't do that today.
  • That is one tough trainer to beat. I still haven't bested him in SoulSilver. TIME TO TRAIN!
