Report: New PS3 Model In The Works

Sony has made a habit of redesigning its consoles as they age to not only put out a sexy new form factor for its consoles, but also to take advantage of decreased manufacturing costs and efficiencies. It looks like the PS3 may get another new version before all is said and done.

Japanese site Pocket News reports that Sony has filed paperwork with the FCC for a new model PS3 with the model code CECH-4001X, as opposed to the current 3000 series.

The pictures filed with the FCC appear to concern themselves with the new placement of the FCC info label, so it's not known what kind of capabilities the new system may have, if any.

  • I don’t think sony need to make an investment on a "new PS3 model"......
  • why do they need to make a new model? everything is fine with the older ones if they are going to release a new ps3 model just make a new one that holds more memory.
  • What the heck. Seems like they dont stop making new models
  • inb4 "We don't want a new model! We want PS4!"
  • Wonder what they are going to do to change the current model?

  • My guess is this will be the PS3's last hurrah, hardware-wise. This is likely going to be the model Sony will ride into the next generation. The PS3 will still sell well after the PS4 launch (whenever that may be), if the robustness of the PS2's life cycle is any indication. Sony is probably just gearing up to be able to produce PS3s more cheaply in order to accommodate this extended life-cycle demand.
  • That's an interesting bit of news. If it's just a new design, perhaps it's a sort of prototype for the PS4's appearance.

  • people love newer models. it'll sell truckloads. I'm happy with my slim though.
  • The PlayStation 3.5
  • Hope it'll have some new hardware (not that kind of hardware, next generation of consoles might have), like iPhone 3GS (4S).
  • I love my slim, but if they make a slim with ps2 backwards compatibility, count me in.
  • i love the double standards

  • Well that's fancy but I really don't have any use for it myself.

  • So they're announcing it on GamesCom

  • I'm happy with my current model, don't see myself picking up a new one if it comes out.
  • Unless its backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games I don't really give a f_____....
  • Considering how close we are to next-gen, it'll take a serious price drop to make this move an attractive one, although PS4 will likely carry a decent price tag, and people continue to buy PS3s, so either way this'll do them some good.  If its true, I wonder how much smaller they'll be able to make the system. :)

  • ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY, with Wii-U coming about at the end of 2012 and Xbox sitting pretty with the Connect, they need to sell more systems for some $$$ and then we will get the PS4 prob end of 2014...
  • well this is good news for some people. Unlike my friends i still have my old fat ps3 60 gb model. I can play my ps2 games on it unlike the newer models!
  • Pass..... Don't care.... How bout a PS4 update sony....
