I still get a little teary eyed when I think of all the amazing things my phone can do. We hold mini computers in our hands that connect us to the entire world and give us all the information we could ever ask for at our fingertips. From Zach Morris-sized cell phones to now, I feel like I’ve watched a child grow up. But truth be told, I do believe there’s even more that our phones can do. And there are a few hackers out there who agree with me.

Open Your Garage Door & Start Your Car

Yep. All with your phone. With a Bluetooth board, a MOSFET switch, and a free app, apparently you can do anything. Read the tutorial at Instructables.

Change the Song at a Party

Download the Remote app by Apple and your iPhone will control iTunes (and Apple TV if you have it). Change a song from anywhere in your home and avoid musical party fouls at all costs.

Turn Off Your Lights and Close Your Curtains

Siri can do so much more than we first thought – she can turn on the fan, close your curtains, and shut off your desk lamp. And she doesn’t even have hands! Watch the video and learn the logistics here.

Set Your DVR When You’re Away

How many times have you kicked yourself for forgetting to set your DVR? Some cable companies, like Direct TV, have a mobile app that lets you watch shows and movies on your device and manage your DVR. Others, like Time Warner Cable, have remote DVR manager mobile sites.

How Not to Be a Slave to Technology
7.6.2012  –  IT Girl

There’s no question about it. We’re obsessed with tech. And it’s starting to become unhealthy. When it’s acceptable to take care of your smartphone more than your pet and to spend more time with your iPad than your boyfriend, it’s time to do something. So IT Girl is stepping in with a few techiquette rules that every gadget lover should follow.

1. Do not check your phone when out to dinner.

I know. If you check-in on Foursquare, you’ll get a mayorship. Or the game just ended and you want to know the score. Guess what? Wait until you leave to do both. Check in on the way out and look up the score afterward. The Internet is always there — which means it will still be there after dinner, too.

2. Do not touch your gadgets when talking to others.

If you decided to engage in a conversation with someone, it should not be while starting at a screen — it should be while staring at their face. No peeking at your phone. If you must, excuse yourself before you whip out your smartphone just as would if you were going to take a call.

3. Do not update your social media networks 24/7.

Because if you are, it means you’re tuning out the moment and tuning into a virtual world. Take a few pics but tweet them later. Forgo a check-in on Facebook because you’re not getting good reception in that basement bar anyway.

4. Do enforce the rules.

Call out your friends when they’re not following correct techiquette. They’ll thank you later.

Save time with GIFs

A picture is worth a thousand words. A GIF, being a series of thousands of GIFs, should then be about ten hundred thousand words. With ever-shortening attention spans, and ever-proliferating GIF-centric Tumblrs, consider using GIFs to transmit a day’s worth of info in just a few seconds. Stick a .GIF in an email in reply to your boss. Post it on a message board when you don’t want to argue. Don’t have a GIF? They’re easy to get!

You could use a Web tool (http://picasion.com/) to make your own GIF. It’s tedious but worth it. Or you could use an app like Cinemagram (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cinemagram/id487225881?mt=8) to make original GIF-like pics on the fly.

But as they say, good artists copy, the best artists steal, so you could always grab your GIFs from sites like Señor GIF (http://senorgif.memebase.com/), or Tumblr (http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/gif+meme) to capture just the right GIF to share.

Happy GIFing!

Taking RC Flight to New Heights
7.4.2012  –  Maker

Makers love to build vehicles. But we’re not just hobbyists trying to produce perfect recreations. We like to push the limits and create our own versions of flight – who says they have to be realistic? Here are just a few interesting takes on travel from Makers who like to break out of the boundaries.

Copters That Can

Ever thought of taking the whole UAV concept up a notch? Watch these quadrocopters play the James Bond theme song and you might start thinking about what else your RC machines can do.

Unreal Replica

So maybe we do like to make models sometimes … when they’re from our favorite sci-fi film. This replica Back to the Future DeLorean time machine really flies, lights up, and looks like it could take anyone through time.

Head-Turning Heights

It’s pretty clear that many Makers think out of the ordinary. I guess that’s how these talented creators’ minds went from “flying plane” to “flying people.” The shapes are convincing, functional and – of course – creative.

Have you built an out-of-the-box RC vehicle? Tell us about it below!

How to Tech Out Your Car
7.3.2012  –  IT Girl
No Comments   |   Email   |   Share on

I’m envious of anyone who owns one of those fully-loaded vehicles. You know the ones with the voice recognition, streaming music, and touch-screen display. My car is in desperate need of an upgrade! But in the meantime, there are a few tweaks I’ll make on my own in an attempt to equip my wheels like the best of them.

Step 1: Smartphone Mount

Whether it plugs into your cigarette lighter or locks onto your windshield, life is easier when your phone is accessible — and charged. And you can send your music through your speaker system with the turn of a dial.

Step 2: Bluetooth Hands-Free Kit

It’s never safe to operate your phone while driving — and it’s illegal in some areas — so your best bet is to make it hands-free. Bluetooth kits can re-route your calls through a sleek speaker that clips to your visor. It’s easy to talk and some kits can even answer calls with a voice command.

Step 3: Music Apps

Now that you can send your tunes through your speakers, give your musical selection an upgrade with your favorite app like Pandora or Spotify. It’s almost as good as having satellite radio … or a CD that never stops …

Step 4: Start Your Engine

Ever wish your car was warmed up and waiting for you? There’s a smartphone app for that. The SmartStart app requires you to install the Viper SmartStart system in your car — not cheap, but then you’ll never have to worry about locking your keys in your car again.

Listen to these podcasts. Now.

Podcasts may seem very mid-Aughts, but they’re still the Internet’s best answer for the Internet. What else are you going to listen to while on your cross-country trip?

Judge John Hodgeman (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/judge-john-hodgman/id337713843). Hilarious John Hodgeman is the geeky man’s Everyman. He doesn’t disappoint in this podcast, centered around Mr. Hodgeman “settling” disputes emailed in by listeners.

The Bugle (http://thebuglepodcast.com/). A political podcast (that’s funny, I promise!) from Andy Zaltzman and The Daily Show’s John Oliver.

Stuff You Should Know (http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/hsw-shows/stuff-you-should-know-podcast.htm). An astounding, educational, and all-around entertaining podcast highlighting the amazingness all around us.

LSAT Logic in Everyday Life (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/lsat-logic-in-everyday-life/id165999105). Now defunct, but still worth a listen. This podcast teaches you how to apply basic logic (like the kind used on the Law School Admissions Test) to live a healthy, skeptical life.

Hardcore History (http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php/hharchive). A hands-down amazing podcast. Without any gimmicks, Dan Carlin brings the past into sharp focus and makes you glad you live in the present.

Investments Every Maker Must Make
6.29.2012  –  Maker
No Comments   |   Email   |   Share on

A painter is nothing without a paintbrush just like a Maker is nothing without his tools. Regardless of what kind of Maker you are – Lego lover, UAV builder, Arduino fan – there are a few key ingredients that complete a true makerspace. Think about expanding your repertoire to include all of these tricks of the trade.

1. 3D Printer

The 3D printing industry is the next big thing and we mean that in the best way possible. Pick up your own fully assembled version for $499 – the cheapest we’ve seen yet. Then head on over to Thingiverse where you can pick up some free digital designs for just about anything.

2. Kinect

Xbox 360’s $150 motion-sensing addition, Kinect, started a motion-sensing revolution. Oh, it can be used for so much more than just playing video games. Kinecthacks.com documents all the latest discoveries – you’ll be bit by the Maker bug in an instant.

3. Lego Mindstorms

Humanoids, machines, animals, vehicles. Lego Mindstorms kits let you build and program your own robot – on your own terms – for $279.99. A small price to pay for the amount of confidence you’ll gain when you upload your first robotics creation to YouTube.

4. Arduino

It’s easy-to-use. We swear. Arduino is an open-source electronics platform that can be programmed to control lights, motors, and more. The boards are affordable and many design files are available for free.

Which is your preferred medium? Comment below!

This you are for males, but try playing The Imperial 03 (Darth Vader's topic) though walking in public places. Ace! Those that support this legalization associated with MJ are in general hypocrites. Their libertarianism works only at this point. Why not really legalize almost all drugs? Why certainly not end this War for Drugs? Why let the government to master smoking? The just reason so many here favour the legalization connected with MJ is really because it is accepted wisdom on the left. The hypocrisy has a more strong aroma as compared with does this MJ. okiee.. im some sort of beginner.. n instant messaging stuck at the very earlier step.. the factor is.. after i the lighting and form a contrast step.. it wont let me do in which watercolor filtration thing.. as as option is there bt when i cnt check out it.. wt shud my partner and i doo? more info nono hair removal reviews Personally, I would likely argue which the only time we have been selling is when we finally sell ourselves to find the listing. Epic Pilgrimages for the Tech Inclined
6.28.2012  –  IT Girl
No Comments   |   Email   |   Share on

If you’re a tech lover, it’s a given that you own a pile of the latest gadgets, you read all the best tech blogs (ahem, this one), and you can answer any techy question your friends and family throw your way. But there’s one thing that makes some tech lovers truer than others: epic techy pilgrimages. Until you’ve journeyed to one of these conventions, you can’t call yourself tech obsessed. So start booking.

South by Southwest

What started as a small-town music festival has morphed into a multi-week corporate-sponsored takeover of Austin every March. SXSW Interactive is where all the best in tech congregate for a week of geek. Hotel rooms are hard to come by so start searching early — or use your favorite sites like Couchsurfing or Airbnb to help you out.

Comic-Con

Held in San Diego in July, this event is the largest of its kind in the US and always makes the headlines for its celebrity appearances and previews of upcoming movies and TV shows. Sure it’s not your typical tech gathering, but there’s no way any tech lover can attend without geeking out.

Consumer Electronics Show

This international event is the largest consumer technology show in the world. It’s held in Las Vegas in January and it’s not necessarily open to the public so you’ll have to find a way in. You have connections, right? During this show, the blogosphere always blows up with the latest and greatest discoveries, so don’t miss the influx of awesome online.

Tech that makes decisions for you
6.27.2012  –  Culturazzi

You’re busy. All those unanswered text messages and smartphone notifications prove it. And with the whole World Wide Web at your fingertips, sometimes it can be tough to make a decision (http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice.html). Sometimes you don’t just need a guide; you need a decision.

Can’t figure out what to eat? Can’t figure out what to eat? Urbanspoon (http://www.urbanspoon.com/mobile-downloads) is the king of foodie decision-making. Slap in where you are, what you’re looking for, and how much you want to spend and Urbanspoon will tell you where to go. If you want to live dangerously, let the app go into “full auto” (with no or limited restrictions) and go nuts.

Can’t figure out what to wear? Why not crowdsource the decision? Tryiton.com (http://www.gotryiton.com/faq) lets you upload an outfit and gather feedback. Advice from strangers! What could go wrong?

Can’t figure out what to Tweet? Hey, sometimes 140 characters is 139 too many to think up. The solution is easy: use That Can Be My Next Tweet (http://yes.thatcan.be/my/next/tweet/). The website looks at your Twitter history and followers, and then creates a new tweet. Careful, it has a tendency to be more interesting than you.

The Maker Bucket List
6.26.2012  –  Maker
No Comments   |   Email   |   Share on

There are probably more than a few legendary life experiences you’ve added to your to-do-before-I-die list like skydiving or climbing Mount Everest or completing a marathon. We think about those things too. But mostly we think about these: the epic pilgrimages every Maker must make. These locales are worthy of the long journey and will bring you great rewards (at least we’re telling ourselves that). Start scheduling, because you won’t want to miss these adventures:

MakerFaire

It’s the ultimate celebration of the Maker lifestyle, which means you gotta head there at least once. There are smaller events across the country all year, but the biggest festivals are in the Bay Area in May and New York City in September.

BrickCon

Seattle is home to a four-day, adults-only, unofficial Lego convention. Fanatics travel from all over the world assemble to observe the Lego masterpieces that are unveiled at this October gathering. One look through their Flickr page and you’ll be convinced you must attend.

RoboGames

Called the Olympics of robots, robot masterminds compete in various events from combat robots to Lego bots to kung-fu androids. Anyone can enter the competition. The April event already passed which gives you a full year to create a winning robot.

Which Maker event is on your must-see list? Tell us!
