General later Pres. Eisenhower was so impressed with the German Autobahns when he led the allies to victory. He used the same idea here and named it "National Defense Access Highways" these roads were later designated Interstates. In the cold war years we actually expected Russian and Chicom troops to invade in the event of war.

The specific reason it was called the "National Defense Highway System" was simply that the federal government is not authorized to build roadways they are not specifically enumerated in the Constitution. By calling it the "National Defense Highway System" Eisenhower was able to justify its construction originally under the Department of Defense. True history great for those who wish to study it.

Air travel is also not authorized in the constitution, which is why we must drive to the border to fly on foreign airlines.
My post is as accurate as yours, I fear.

Gee I thought odd meant north and south and even numbers meant they were going east and west

I knew the meanings of the numbers 30 years ago. I thought I'd try the clip but the announcer who talks to you like you're 5 years old was just too much for me. I stopped it after 20 seconds.
North/South=odd numbers, higher as you go east (I-5 on west coast, I-95 on east coast); East/West=even numbers, higher as you go north (I-10 runs from FL to CA, I-90 from MA to WA). 3 digit/1st number even refers to beltways, (the 285 in Atlanta) 3 digit/1st number odd refers to arterial or bypass highways (the 295 in Baltimore). That's complex?
I'd love to know why Yahoo continually treats their readers as morons. If it wasn't for the hassle of changing my yahoo email, I'd ditch Yahoo in a second.

Yes, I've know this for years, too, and I figured it out on my own.

Even I knew this as common knowledge. Now I understand if this was to educate foreigners, but if many Americans who already know how to drive didn't know about the highway numbering system, then I am disturbed and afraid that it's an indication on how much American education has degraded. :(

This has been common knowlege for years.

Correction...bypass highways are also 1st digit even numbers, not odd. (295 was a bad example). (not that anyone cares...:-)

I noticed that, too. Check out the I-80 bypass highways in the Bay Area in California. There are so many bypasses; I think they've used all the numbers.

An odd umber in front of the hwy. no. indicates a spur, An even number indicates a loop or half loop that reconects to the interstate.

William, think the odd numbred could be caled feeders too... usually toward the center of a metropolitan area...

I-15 is the route Jedidiah Smith took.

The 3 digit Spur/Loop rule only applies to Interstate highways.

I knew the interstate signs already but not the rules for the state highway signs. I taught my son this when teaching him to drive. Also that you can figure out if you are going north/south or east/west by watching the highway markers. They count up for going north and east and down for going south and west. Seems minor if you stay close to home but if you get out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night it will get you pointed in the right direction.

I have a more interesting (and correct) explanation for how our interstate highways were numbered. Obviously even-numbered Interstate highways run east west, and odd-numbered run north south. But the number assigned refers to the percentage of the country to the west of the highway (for North-South interstates), or to the south of the East-West highways. So I-95, which runs north-south near the east coast, marks where 95% of the US land mass is west, with only 5% of the land mass between the I-95 highway and the coastline. And so on. Now you'll never forget.
