Underwhelmed by the Fall - a Look at Autumn 2012

Autumn is a big time for gaming. All of the Triple-A releases come out during those three months, with the occasional title jumping early like Oklahoma settlers, hitting the last two weeks of August.

The last two years, Autumn has made for a bunch of tough decisions for me. Last year especially.I had so many tough choices to make (as detailed here and here) that I had to cut a bunch of them out. I've picked up three of them this year (Deus Ex: Human RevolutionRage and Crysis 2) and will be buying the Skyrim game of the year edition when it eventually comes out.

Game Informer recently published a list of games coming out this Fall, though, and I have to say that I'm not going to have that problem this year. First time in a while.

That's not to say that any of these are bad games. I know there's a bunch of interest and anticipation for Halo 4, Darksiders 2, and others. But for me?

Colour me underwhelmed.

Last year I limited myself to four titles among a huge list. This year, I can only find four titles that I am actually really anticipating. So my choice is easy. And one of them wasn't even on my list until recently.

I'll take these in scheduled order.

Borderlands 2 (September 18)

(Thanks to Loud-Mouthed Gamers)

I loved the first game, though I did find that single-player got a bit tedious and repetitive after a while. I may have to do this one co-op a bit more often. Anyone getting this on the Xbox that may want to do that?

It looks like it has tons of personality, and as the trailer says, bazillions of guns! How can you go wrong with that?

Bad Guy: "Is that a rocket launcher in your pants or are you just happy to see me?"

Bandit: *BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*

Bad Guy: "Ouch. Guess that was a rocket launcher.* (said as he splinters into 50,000 pieces)

XCom: Enemy Unknown (October 9)

(Thanks to GameFreaks)

Ever since I read the Game Informer preview of this game, I've been greatly anticipating it. I love turn-based games, giving a rest to my twitch reflexes (get your mind out of the gutter). I never played the original XCom games on the PC, but I've heard enough about them that I'm stoked for this one. Everything in Game Informer's preview just added to that feeling.

Here's Game Informer's hub of articles about the game.

I'm anticipating this one as much as I was my first date in college. Then again, a second date never happened, so I hope this one has better results.

Assassin's Creed III (October 30)

(Thanks to Gaming Bolt)

The next evolution in the Assassin's Creed series! I'm interested to see what two years (or is it three?) of development by the original Assassin's Creed II developers will bring us. I'm intrigued by the Revolutionary War setting and how much of the action is going to be out in the wilderness. I've been a big fan of the series, and while Revelations was mildly disappointing (I did enjoy it, but it's the worst of the last three, definitely), this one promises to take the franchise in a whole new direction, and I'm really anticipating it.

I'm also greatly anticipating the new story with a new protagonist. Ezio was cool, but he was getting old (both figuratively *and* literally...he was so spry!). This is the kind of game I have been getting for my PS3 (I try to avoid FPS games on the PS3 and get other types of games instead, with a couple of exceptions), but since I've done all the other ones on Xbox, I'll probably do that for this one as well.

I'm waiting for the first review panning the game that starts out with "Playing Assassin's Creed III was like taking a tomahawk to the head: eye-opening."

CoD: Black Ops 2 (November 13)

(Thanks to Gaming Blend)

This is the game that I was going to leave off my list. I still enjoy the franchise, but I'm finding that I'm playing less and less of the multiplayer with each iteration, and I figured there would be enough Fall titles that I would rather want instead. Turns out not to be the case.

Even if it were, though, I may still have been getting it. I love the promise of things like branching storylines, extra missions whose success or failure will affect the story, and things like that. It will be interesting to see how they end up implementing all of this, as well as the multiplayer. They've got me on board for at least one more iteration of the franchise.

(Cue the CoD haters' gnashing of teeth in 5.....4......3......2......1)

BINGO!

And that's it. Nothing else is screaming out at me to buy it early. I may very well end up buying Far Cry 3 and Dishonored later, maybe in the new year, depending on reviews and maybe depending on what I have time for (Bioshock: Infinite, potentially The Last of Us (does that have a release date yet?) and the likely Grand Theft Auto V may inhibit that).

So after last year's anticipation, I find myself not bothering that much this year. I am really looking forward to the games above, but no hard decisions are having to be made this year.

My wallet does not share my laid-back attitude, of course. It's spending as much as it did last year, so it's not happy.

How about you?

(bonus points for those of you who understand why one of the tags was included, but you may have to be "of an age" to get it)

  • Okay, it is called FALL, not Autumn! We spell color without U! You claim to be a dual citizen, but all I see is a 100% Hockey loving Canadian! I am actually glad this Fall will be a bit less crowded than the past few years, my schedule and my back account need the break. I too will be getting Borderlands 2, and I hadn't planned on it initially, so looking forward to that. Same could be said for ACIII, I didn't really enjoy revelations so I had planned on passing this go round, but the game is looking amazing, so I am going to pick it up.
  • Good thing I'm poor, or deciding what to buy would be difficult.

  • You reminded me that Xcom still exists. I would buy it, but you know me - too poor as a teenager to do anything other than Gamefly. As a result, my must-buys have proven themselves to be Borderlands 2, and Halo 4  (You also should know how I am about Halo). I wish I could get everything, but alas, I can not.

My next big buys would be Assassin's Creed, Dishonored (maybe), maybe Xcom, and... Wow. You're right. I'm feeling almost underwhelmed the more I think about it. What fall game is coming out this year that's not another shooter (that I don't have a fan bias towards). I dunno.

    Anyways.

WHAT IS THIS MADNESS??? CALL OF DUTY???

  • I'm a little disappointed by the fall release schedule as well, but I am looking forward to Halo 4 and Borderlands 2.

  • Looks like you and I are having the opposite problem. Dishonored, Darksiders II, Sleeping Dogs,  Borderlands 2, AC III, possibly Hitman: Absolution, Farcry 3 and Black Ops 2...I actually think this year will be rougher than last year was for me. Anyway, thanks for sharing what you're looking forward too!

  • I know I am getting Darksiders II(preordered on Saturday), Dishonored, Assassin's Creed III, and Hitman Absolution. I will wait for Christmas for Far Cry 3 and XCOM. Now depending on if I can get some extra cash, I will get either Sleeping Dogs or Resident Evil 6.

  • Yeah, there's not a whole lot I'm excited for this year. Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed 3, Dishonored, and Borderlands 2 is about it.

The game I was looking forward to the most (Bioshock Infinite) being pushed into 2013 hurt lol.

  • I'm not hatin, but to the people that say its gonna be a disappointment & the lack of games that are going to come out, come on, quit being a whiny titbag..

There's a shitton of AAA coming out this year. & so what if there's not as many coming out as last year. When did we start getting so selfish & start expecting the best of the best all the time.

Like I said, I'm not dissin on anyone & I realize some of y'all put underwhelmed & things similar & this comment is to y'all. But is aimed more at the guys that are sayinng "this year sucks for games"  which I've heard a lot lately.

Be happy that another great lineup is coming to you & get mad at something that actually matters. Your wallet is definitely gonna be depressing once again.

  • I'm not sure of exact release dates, but I know the next few years (if I do get all the games I want) are going to be tough.. my poor wallet lol. But as for fall games you mentioned, I'm interested in ACIII! Nice post Hist, and I cracked up at that COD photo. Too funny! XD

  • nice post, and i will be getting borderlands 2 and black ops 2 on ps3

also nba 2k13, far cry 3, metro last light, sniper ghost warrior 2 and ps all stars battle royale

  • Must buys- XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Dishonored, Assassin's Creed III, and Hitman

Wait for review- Madden 13, COD Black Ops 2, and Far Cry 3

Might buy waaayyy later (on sale)- Darksiders II and Medal of Honor

As you can see, I'm rather exited about the games this Autumn.

  • my avatar gives it away. you know what the game i want this year is gonna be.

  • Thanks for the comments, guys! But nobody took me up on my challenge? Where are the old fogeys? Shootist? Where are you?

I already replied to Mojo, so...

@Jolt: I guess there are benefits to everything, eh? :)

@GoldvsSilver: Yeah, I understand the "broke teenager" thing. You have to make even more specific choices. Though you can still partake in the "I would buy if..." hypothetical question! :) Yes, I do remember your Halo blog. :)

@BRAVoF1ve: I just have never gotten into Halo. The only one I bought was Halo 3 (Halo Reach was a throw-in when I got my console), and nothing's ever made me decide to buy any others.

@Silvershine08: A friend has talked me into probably buying Hitman in the new year, though it's not a must-buy for me at the moment. Some of those other titles might fall into that category as well (I had no plans to buy Crysis 2, but it just jumped out at me and was really cheap on Monday, so I did it), so who knows?

@Walker: Sounds like you've got a full load!

@Masterassassin: Yeah, it's a bummer about Bioshock. That would have been up there, definitely.

@Roxin17: I'm not complaining and I'm not whining. I'm just underwhelmed. I actually don't mind not having to make really hard choices this year. Last year was bad for that. I hated waiting for Arkham City (another game I forgot to mention above) while everybody was raving about it, but I had my reasons for delaying it (That actually was bought in November during a Christmas sale).

@Ace: Finally! Somebody mentions the CoD photo. :)

@roadrashdeath: Nice list! Sounds like you'll have a busy Autumn...I mean Fall

@Praetorian44: Yay! Another XCom fan! I'm really looking forward to that one.

    @cheesey200: Ummm....G.I. Joe? :P
