Reader Discussion: Today, Is Our Independence Day

As Bill Pullman said in the movie Independence Day, "Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!" and then Randy Quaid flew his plane into the alien ship and the humans celebrated.

Technically, the above reference has nothing to do with video games, but it is on television currently, and it made me think of the most patriotic video games. For my money, it has to be either Fugitive Hunter, the game that culminates in a martial arts fight against Osama Bin Laden, or Metal Wolf Chaos, where you play as president Michael Wilson in the Metal Wolf mech suit as he fights to take back the United Stated from his arch-nemesis, vice-president Richard Hawk.

Surely there are others that I am neglecting, though. Let us know in the comments below.

  • Black Ops? I mean have you seen the end of that?
  • As a resident of Mushroom Kingdom, I'm proud to have served in the fight against the tyrant, King Koopa.
  • Kingdom Hearts. Just because of the fact nobody else had a cast like it.
  • I think we all know what game I have to choose. Fallout 3 because... War. War never changes.
  • Medal of Honer. Nothing more patriotic than giving your life for your fellow countrymen. Rabbit does just that and you get an up front and personal view.
  • Definitely going to have and go with the 2010 MOH. There hasn't been a better love letter to our troops in gaming in my opinion.

  • Spinter Cell?

  • The ending of Black Ops is the most gloriously patriotic thing I have ever seen.

  • Hmm... I'm not sure. Metal Gear?

  • Hmm... I'm not sure. Metal Gear?
  • It would have to be MoH from 2010. I loved the fact at the ending with the speech of what the United States or any countries troops have to do to protect their countries and way of life.

  • duke nukem forever, redneck rampage, and call of duty black ops.

  • Every time I win a match in Mortal Kombat as Jax.
I am a bit irritated when I see someone wearing an American flag in real life, video games, or other media, though. It seems very disrespectful for some reason.
  • Um, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. I mean, it has "patriots" and "guns" in the title, so it has to be it. Though, I guess MGS2 & 3 had those too, just not in the title. Well, 3 had the Philosophers... (rambles on about Metal Gear fiction).
  • Twisted Metal 2 is the most American game I have ever played. What's more patriotic than blowing up the Eiffel Tower in an ice cream truck with machine guns and missiles strapped to it while listening to rock music? Nothing!

  • While not specific to America, the Anguished One ending in Devil Survivor 2 feels like an independence day for humanity as a whole. *HEAVY SPOILERS* Humanity doesn't have to deal with Gods meddling in their affairs. They can live free from Polaris and the stars control. They have their fate fully in their own hands now.

Considering how humanity usually ends up in most Megami Tensei games, I declare it one of the most happiest endings in the entire series. Even if Yu Narukami is still better off then the DS2 main character.

Nation specific, uh, I don't think I can name any. AC3 hasn't come out yet and I don't play most shooters

  • i know i'm not the first to say it, but MoH 2010.

  • I feel like I am drawing a blank on patriotic videogames, you could say any modern military fps, but those are too obvious.

Perhaps Contra... as far as I know Bill Rizer is American.
  • Call of Juarez: The Cartel
