Sony Buys Cloud-Based Gaming Company

Sony announced it entered into an agreement to acquire cloud-based gaming company Gaikai Inc. for $380 million.

"By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

“SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.”

Gaikai was founded in 2008. How the service will be integrated into PlayStation Network and other applications in the future were not revealed at this time.

  • Latency, compressed graphics, no used games, no thanks. If you want to take my discs away then I'm at least downloading the games to a harddrive so they don't play like sh1t. I've played on the cloud and it sucks up there. I'm getting a Gaming PC in 18 months. Xbox720/PS4 aren't appealing to me at all.
  • hey guys, I know this is off topic, but I'm having a hard time getting a response to my study on likes/dislikes/plans to buy of the gaming community. I'm giving away two $60 GameStop gift cards as incentive (although you have to provide your email to be eligible for that), and if you're interested in the trends in the gaming industry I'd be happy to share the results. It's really quick, and you'd be helping me out a ton. Not to mention the odds of you winning the giftcards are pretty high. Also, please feel free to forward the link on to anyone you might know who is interested in video games. Thanks everyone. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/summ12new
  • eh, its not a big deal

  • I want to own the game. I want to be able to access it offline. Screw cloud gaming. Give me something tangible.
  • I hope this means that Sony finally has the technical chops to add the promised remote play to Vita, rather than that Sony is going to stream games to consoles and tablets.  I like my hard copy game discs. I do not want to see them go.

  • I think this is awesome news, as long as they don't release any exclusive content on the service. Cloud gaming, while awesome, isn't ready for prime time yet. Even someone with an internet as fast as me, which a perfect ping, download speeds on 90mbps and upload of 30mbps, can't fully enjoy Gaikai or Onlive because of lag issues and blurry, sub-HD graphics. And soon we'll be upgrading to 300mbps, and even then I can guarantee it still won't look great. I don't want to be forced to use the service, hence why I don't want any exclusive content on it.

The idea of cloud gaming is awesome, but if someone like me, who has internet speeds a crap ton faster than the recommended speeds for those services, can't play them without lag issues I don't see how people in other parts of the country are going to be able to fully enjoy them. The worst part of those services, especially Online, is that even when playing on a full HD screen, with blazing fast connection, you'll never get a resolution that looks anything near what you would get on a console or PC.

Anyone who tells you differently is either lying, or lives extremely close to one of those services server rooms.
  • Cloud is the future! Let's just hope they still give us the option to store stuff on harddrives

  • Yeah, but did they buy up any prospective game franchises in the process?

  • Good move or bad move, at this point who the hell knows. but all i can say is that i really like to have physical copies of my games...

  • Good for them, because honestly things look terrible for everyone in Sony BESIDES the gaming division.  If things get much worse, I wonder if we'd see Sony just start putting all of their resources towards games like Nintendo...

  • Hmmmmmmmm......

    Good for Sony.

  • sony got smarts

  • they have no money and they do this?

It will be nothing more than an option

  • I don't know if it'll really help them out the way the PS3 is going these days. If they don't release a PS4 soon, I think their sunk. . .

  • This new internet and games features is just pointless and a way for those companies milk some money out of us, needing internet and third party programs for single player games, games yet to be release and they already selling "DLC" and now this? The cloud system will be the end for many gamers and for those who are all happy I can clearly see all games needing subscriptions for the cloud thing. What about those who don´t have internet? Not my case but still goodbye sony...

  • i'm really excited to see this type of tech. being seen by a well known company, which tells me that it is here to stay

  • The fruits of this (expensive) labour will probably be seen heavily in the next generation.  Next-gen is going to be about more than hardware specs, and a move like this will grant Sony greater strength in one of the fields that consoles are currently lacking in.

  • That's cool I've never used Gaikai, but it seems like it's good.

  • I'm very curious to see what MS will do as a response. There has been some heavy rumours (and leaked documents), so this is going to be interesting.

  • Yay, let's never own any part of the games we buy ever again! Could you idiots be any more stupid?
