Apple sells record 17 million iPads in latest quarter

Apple sold 17 million iPads in its latest quarter, an 84 percent increase from the year-ago period. The prior record for iPad sales was set during last year's December quarter, when Apple sold 15.4 million of the devices.

"We're thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. The company said growing sales to Fortune 500 companies helped boost results.

Sales of the iPad, which is Apple's second-biggest revenue generator behind the iPhone, totaled $9.2 billion. That made up more than 26 … Read more

Apple: Samsung, you owe us $2.5B in damages

Apple is looking for Samsung to fork over $2.5 billion to settle patent infringement claims in the U.S.

That's the latest figure bandied about by Apple in the ongoing patent infringement saga between the two companies. But how did Apple cook up such a figure?

Fleshed out by Foss Patents' Florian Mueller, the amount is based on the per-unit royalties that Apple believes it is due from Samsung as part of the intellectual property rights lawsuit.

Drilling down the price tag per unit, $2.02 covers the "overscroll bounce" technology cited in the '318 patent. … Read more

iPad Mini to debut in September, says analyst

Apple's alleged iPad Mini could see the light of day before the end of September, says KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a report released yesterday and covered by MacRumors, Kuo said he expects the new iPhone to debut in September, possibly near the start of the month. The iPad Mini will then follow closely as a second act.

Assuming an iPad Mini does pop up in September, the analyst is anticpating heavy demand. He's already projecting unit sales of 1.8 million just for the few short weeks marking the end of the calendar third quarter. And … Read more

Apple and Samsung fail at making peace in patent war

As the Apple vs. Samsung patent trial rapidly approaches, settlement talks between the two companies still seem to be stymied, according to Reuters.

Apple CEO Tim Cook met with two of Samsung's top executives, vice chairman Choi Gee-sung and mobile chief Shin Jong-Kyun, in an undisclosed meeting last week to see if the two sides could resolve the matter before trial, according to Reuters. But the talks were to no avail -- mediation between the two companies still seems to have fallen short.

The two tech giants became embroiled in this legal battle in April 2011 when Apple filed … Read more

iPad and Nexus 7 face off in torture test

I've been working the device torture beat here for a while, but this video of an iPad and Google Nexus 7 going head-to-head in drop and submersion tests almost gave me a full-blown case of DTSD (device trauma stress disorder).

Once again, the device warranty folks at SquareTrade subjected two devices to some low-level maiming to see which survives with the least damage and the iPad suffered the most battle scars, at least from the drops. … Read more

Could these be Apple's ads apologizing to Samsung?

Judge Colin Birss seems to have character. First, he declared that Samsung couldn't possibly have copied the iPad because Samsung's products are simply "not as cool."

This week, though, he ordered Apple to run ads on its UK Web site and in advertisements in British newspapers saying that Samsung wasn't a copycat.

There seems to be no firm direction, though, as to the actual copy of these ads. So I thought I'd give Apple a little help.

These are a little unpolished, but I hope they serve to offer the company some positive direction. … Read more

Touchfire overlay adds tactile feedback to your iPad keyboard

Hoping to use your iPad in place of your laptop? The stumbling block has always been the keyboard: onscreen keys lack the tactile feedback afforded by the real thing, and therefore tend to trip up touch-typists (who are now woefully mislabeled).

Of course, there are any number of keyboard cases and add-ons, but those add bulk and weight to your tablet. Isn't there some way to make the iPad's own keyboard more serviceable?

That's the idea behind the Touchfire, a silicon overlay that aims to provide enough tactile response that you can live with the iPad's … Read more

iPad makes quiet debut in China

The iPad made a quiet debut in China on Friday, devoid of the chaotic scenes associated with previous Apple product launches in the fast-growing market.

Orderly crowds outside Apple Stores in Shanghai and Beijing surprised Apple observers in China, who are used to lines of fans waiting overnight in long, snaking lines while scalpers hawk premium spots at the head of the line.

"I'm very surprised that there is no line," Sun Xufei, an IT worker who was the first in line of about 20 people waiting outside the Shanghai Lujiazui Apple store, told Reuters. "I … Read more

Judge your iPad by its literary masterpiece book cover

I know e-books are convenient, but I just can't tear myself away from running my fingers down the spines of real books and listening for that crinkling sound of a fresh hardcover bending open. I like the way they look. I like the way they feel.

My iPad may finally get that same sort of love if Out of Print's new Kickstarter project meets its goal. Backers will have their choice of 10 different classic literature book covers to adorn their Kindle Fire or iPad 2 or 3.… Read more

iPad still a destination for fun and games, study finds

Apple's iPad can do an awful lot. But most iPad owners would prefer to stick to Web surfing and entertainment, according to a new study.

Research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners today released the results of a study it conducted of more than 1,000 iPad buyers between December 2011 and April 2012. CIRP asked those recent buyers what they're most likely to do with their slate and found that 40 percent of respondents indicated they surf the Web on the iPad, leading all possible activities.

Watching video, looking at photos, or listening to music, lumped together as &… Read more
