Mountain Lion roars onto Macs

Mountain Lion roars onto Mac computers and Netflix is getting some new competition:

Mac users can now upgrade their operating systems to version 10.8. The official CNET review praises Mountain Lion for its cloud functionality and useful updates to some core apps. However, a lackluster gamecenter and a dictation feature that requires an internet connection are a bit disappointing. So should you upgrade? If it were any more than $20 we'd say no, but the price for this update is just right.

Apple also announced its Q3 earnings, and while iPad sales soared, a drop in iPhone consumption … Read more

What's next for Apple? All eyes on the holidays

Apple's rare earnings miss yesterday, driven by a falloff in iPhone sales, dinged the stock and led Wall Street analysts to reassess their expectations and financial models for Apple's current quarter.

The situation is an odd sort of problem. Sure, iPhone sales dipped in the latest quarter -- selling 26 million versus expectations of 29 million -- but the company stressed that its fan-base is simply putting off buying new products until the new version (read: the iPhone 5) comes out.

And that -- along with many other product upgrades -- leads us to look ahead not to … Read more

Apple sold 17 million iPads in its latest quarter, an 84 percent increase from the year-ago period. The prior record for iPad sales was set during last year's December quarter, when Apple sold 15.4 million of the devices.

"We're thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. The company said growing sales to Fortune 500 companies helped boost results.

Sales of the iPad, which is Apple's second-biggest revenue generator behind the iPhone, totaled $9.2 billion. That made up more than 26 … Read more

Apple Q3 earnings: $35B in revenue, 26M iPhones, 17M iPads

iPhones and iPads once again led the way in a record quarter for Apple, but the results were less than what Wall Street expected.

During its third fiscal quarter, which ran through June 30, Apple reported revenue of $35 billion and earnings of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per share. That was up from the $28.57 billion in revenue and profits of $7.31 billion, or $7.79 per share, the company reported for the same quarter a year ago.

Wall Street was expecting Apple to pull in earnings of $10.35 a share on revenue of $37.… Read more

Tuesday's top stories score a touchdown against trolls:

YouTube is hoping to reduce its troll population by letting users go by their real names. Google+ accounts can now be used as a YouTube identity. The switch can be done in settings. Before making the change, users can review past activity and delete any undesirable comments. But this isn't a required switch. Users can keep their existing account names.

Apple: Samsung, you owe us $2.5B in damages

Apple is looking for Samsung to fork over $2.5 billion to settle patent infringement claims in the U.S.

That's the latest figure bandied about by Apple in the ongoing patent infringement saga between the two companies. But how did Apple cook up such a figure?

Fleshed out by Foss Patents' Florian Mueller, the amount is based on the per-unit royalties that Apple believes it is due from Samsung as part of the intellectual property rights lawsuit.

Drilling down the price tag per unit, $2.02 covers the "overscroll bounce" technology cited in the '318 patent. … Read more
