For 50 years, cartoonist Charlie Daniel has poked fun with a gentle touch

No, Charlie Daniel is not retiring. Yes, he feels fine. The man with the dry wit, generous nature and pointed pen has toiled 50 years as editorial cartoonist for Knoxville newspapers.

Daniel began at the Knoxville Journal in July 1958 and moved to the News Sentinel in 1992 when the Journal ended daily publication. In five decades he's been watchdog, champion, guardian and conscience of his adopted home.

Venable: 50 years and still on the job

One of the most poignant cartoons Charlie Daniel ever produced wasn't a drawing at all.

It ran on the editorial page of the old Knoxville Journal on Saturday, Nov. 23, 1968, two days after the death of the newspaper's legendary editor.

This is how we roll: Drawing on 50 years

The News Sentinel is celebrating 50 years of editorial cartooning by the remarkable Charlie Daniel with, among other things, a major package on him this Sunday that you won't want to miss online.
