Google to unveil tablet to rival Kindle Fire, says Asus exec

Google will soon launch a tablet made by and co-branded with Asus, an executive for Asus said today.

"It's targeting Amazon," the unidentified exec told Reuters about the device. "The Kindle is based on Google's platform but with its own service, so Google has to launch its own service, too."

Tune in to CNET's live blog from the Google I/O keynote starting at 9:30 a.m. PT Wednesday.

Google is expected to unveil its own 7-inch tablet at the company's I/O conference, which starts today and runs until Friday. But the Asus executive's statement is the first that seemingly confirms an upcoming launch of the new product.

Alleged Nexus 7 tablet images surface

Alleged Nexus 7 tablet images surface

A pair of images hitting the Internet today have the Android community in a tizzy over the possible first photos of the fabled Nexus tablet. Initially posted on PhoneArena, the two pictures give a decent, albeit blurry, look at the rumored device.

The front side of the device photographed has a white face, while the rear side looks to have two colors, black up top and silver along the bottom. Given the position and orientation of the Google logo, the tablet looks to be designed for portrait mode as opposed to Android's more popular landscape mode. Meanwhile, the Asus logo at the bottom clearly indicates who has designed the hardware and matches up with some long-held rumors.

HTC Ville C tipped as lower-powered, cheaper One S

HTC Ville C tipped as lower-powered, cheaper One S

Less than one day after HTC announced its Desire C for U.K. consumers, yet another "quietly brilliant" smartphone has landed on our radar.

BriefMobile obtained details of a handset with the code name of Ville C, which appears to be a cheaper, albeit lower-powered HTC One S.

Hardware details are nearly identical to the One S and include a 4.3 qHD AMOLED display, 16GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, and a 8-megapixel camera. The processor, however, is expected to be a Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon S3 instead of the 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 chipset. Though the image suggests a 1.7GHz CPU, the source advises it will be clocked at 1.2GHz.

Sony 'Hayabusa' may be 4.5-inch flagship handset

Sony 'Hayabusa' may be 4.5-inch flagship handset

The last, and only, time we spoke of the Sony LT29i, we saw it listed on a leaked 2012 road map.

With an expected price of 493 euros ($650 U.S.), I can assume only that it would be something worthy of flagship status. And if today's rumored details prove to be correct, then that is exactly what we'll be getting this summer.

Said to be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the LT29i, aka the Hayabusa, is pegged with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with an upgraded graphics processor unit. The battery is listed as being 2,200mAh, which puts it slightly above most of today's Android smartphones. As impressive as this all sounds, consider that Sony is rumored to squeeze this into a 7mm case.
