1. Abby Wambach was born June 2, 1980, in Rochester, N.Y.
2. She is the youngest of seven children.
3. As a kid, she was moved from the girls team to the boys after scoring 27 goals in just three games.
4. In addition to soccer, Wambach played basketball in high school.
5. Wambach attended the University of Florida and led them to an NCAA championship in 1998 and four consecutive SEC championships.
6. She remains the Gators' all-time leading scorer with 96 goals, and was recently inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame.
7. She went on to play for the Washington Freedom, alongside Mia Hamm, in Women's Professional Soccer.
8. In 2011, the Freedom relocated and became the magicJack. Wambach was named player-coach. WPS folded in May 2012.
9. At the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, her header in extra time gave the United States a 2-1 victory over Brazil and an Olympic gold medal.
10. She's all about the team: "No I or individual is better than the team. I've scored no goals just on my own. Every goal I've ever scored has been because of someone else on my team, their excellence, their bravery. And I'm kind of the end product of a collection of a really good vibe, and feeling, and creativity on the field."
11. Wambach has 138 career goals, placing her second only to Mia Hamm (158) on the all-time U.S. scoring list.
