ICANN awarded control of internet's underlying address system for up to seven more years

ICANN, the body that manages everything from IP addresses to top-level domains, will keep control of these key functions until at least 2015. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, part of the US Department of Commerce, announced on Monday that it had renewed the contract for the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which gives ICANN high-level control over allocating IP addresses, administering the root name servers that underlie the Domain Name System, and assigning numbering resources among other things. There's more to ICANN than these systems, but they're vitally important for both it and the internet at large.

Verizon filed a brief with a federal court on Monday, as part of its ongoing litigation against the FCC's net neutrality rules. In its brief, Verizon argued that the agency's regulations are not only unconstitutional, but "arbitrary and capricious." Facebook adds new status icons for same-sex marriages

In a recent change, Facebook is allowing same-sex newlyweds to celebrate their unions with more appropriate cake topper icons. Previously, the icon was an immutable bride-and-groom design, but now, male Facebook users choosing male partners in the "Marriage" Timeline event pop-up will see the icon switch to a dual-groom design (pictured above), and vice versa for female users.
