Canon T4i camera grip could turn white, cause mild allergic reaction

Gallery Photo: Canon Rebel T4i hands-on pictures

Canon's had a bit of a manufacturing screw-up, it seems: a small batch of the company's brand-new EOS Rebel T4i / 650D DSLR cameras have rubber grips that include an unwanted chemical that could change their color from black to white, and potentially cause an allergic reaction as well. Canon says that too much rubber accelerator was used to vulcanize the rubber grips, and a light coating of...

DARPA tests two new gigapixel-class cameras as part of AWARE imaging program

DARPA prototype gigapixel camera

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency — DARPA — has recently completed successful tests on two gigapixel-class cameras as part of a program it hopes will provide even more advanced imagery for use in military operations. The two prototypes tested had analogous resolutions of 0.96-gigapixels and 1.4-gigapixels, respectively, each utilizing a spherical objective lens paired with between 100 and 150 small cameras. Using the array of smaller cameras allows for better image correction and more precise focus, DARPA says, resulting in images that have far less distortion than those generated with current systems.

The cameras were developed as part of DARPA's AWARE program (that breaks down to Advanced Wide FOV Architectures for Image Reconstruction and Exploitation). The program aspires to create imaging solutions that can be...

Kodak wins clearance to sell digital imaging patents

A bankruptcy court in New York has given Kodak clearance to sell off its digital imaging patents, despite objections from Apple and FlashPoint Technologies. Apple and FlashPoint initially challenged Kodak's patent auction back in January, claiming ownership over ten of the patent assets up for sale. Kodak finally responded to these claims last month, filing a lawsuit against the two companies for allegedly interfering with its post-bankruptcy sale. A decision in this case is still pending,...

Sony ups XQD write speeds to 168MB/s with new S Series memory cards

Photo

Sony is introducing its next-generation of XQD memory cards, the S Series. Aimed at sports photographers, the new cards offer sustained read and write speeds of 168MB/s, considerably swifter than the first generation XQD rate of 125MB/s. The increased speed also means that XQD is now faster than the (theoretical) maximum interface speed of the CompactFlash cards Sony hopes the new standard will replace.

The XQD format was originally developed...

VLC 2.0.2 retina comparison

VLC 2.0.2 has just been released for Windows and OS X, and while the update further tweaks video playback on both platforms, the major changes come to the version for Apple's desktop OS. For those who took the plunge and upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina display, you'll notice that the update introduces support for the high-resolution screen. This extends not only to icons and menus, but also to the video content itself, as can be seen...
