TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Barclays PLC, the U.K. banking major, said on Tuesday that Bob Diamond resigned as chief executive and a director with immediate effect. Marcus Agius, who the company said Monday had stepped down as chairman, will retake the post at the head of the board and lead the search for a new CEO, Barclays said. Candidates from inside and outside the company will be considered, Barclays said. "My motivation has always been to do what I believed to be in the best interests of Barclays," Diamond said in a statement. "No decision over that period was as hard as the one that I make now to stand down as chief executive. The external pressure placed on Barclays has reached a level that risks damaging the franchise. I cannot let that happen." The management moves at Barclays came after regulators imposed a fine on the firm for attempted manipulation of interest rates on which trillions of dollars of transactions were based.
