The Last of Us Won't Have Co-Op Story Campaign

While the game's concept – two survivors in a post-apocalyptic wasteland – seems built for co-op, Naughty Dog says the game's main campaign won't be playable cooperatively.

However, that doesn't mean there won't be a significant multiplayer component to the game. In an interview with Gaming Examiner, The Last of Us game director Bruce Straley elaborated, "We are supporting multiplayer with The Last of Us. We’re not ready to talk about the details of how multiplayer will be implemented, however we can say that it is not co-op within the main campaign."

We'll be interested to see what Naughty Dog comes up with. However, we can't help but be a little disappointed with the lack of story co-op. Lets hope there's some other type of co-op mode in the game.

  • Good. co op is fine and dandy, but it doesn't have to be in every game with multiple protagonists.
  • Should be interesting to see
  • Thank God! From the demo, the AI of the girl seems good enough so that she wont ruin the experience, and it'll give the player more a sense of responsibility, looking after her and all. So ready for this game.
  • I don't mind their not being co-op, it wouldn't hurt me if a game with a great single player didn't have any multiplayer at all. I'm excited for this game though. Naughty dog hasn't let me down yet.

  • Well that sucks! But i completely trust Naughty Dog! This will be amazing, and i'm sure the multiplayer either way will be original.
  • It's still going to be awesome and that's all that matters. I don't even know who I would play with if it did have a co-op story mode.

  • Doesn't matter, this game is still going to kick ass.

  • Thank God. I was really, really hoping this game wouldn't have coop. I'm not sure they aren't making it as we speak, but I sure as hell hope they aren't making any multiplayer either. This is a single player game. It is all about the campaign, the characters, the atmosphere. Taking resources away to tack on a multiplayer mode that 4 people will play for a few hours before going back to Killzone 3/Call of Duty/Halo, is just pointless.
  • Lame. So they're probably going to shoe-horn in some deathmatch modes, maybe have someone play as infected, instead of having natural story co-op? That seems kind of stupid. It's a rare day when I get to sit down with a buddy and play through a game co-op. It's even rarer when that game doesn't suck.

Edit: Just to clarify since this article seems steered towards single-player, yes, I agree. True single-player games are always some of the best, but if you're going to do multi, I'd like to see some co-op, especially when it seems so natural to have.
  • I like a good co-op campaign but it isn't what I'm looking for when I buy a Naughty Dog game. I can't wait to here about the multiplayer though!

  • Hmm, I look forward to hearing more. =D

  • You mean I won't be able to play co-op in every single game made, even if it means totally ruining the experience by forcing me to play with idiots? That sucks!
  • Dang it! Hopefully it uses more than one controller so me and my brothers can play multiplyer .....offline or online
  • If theres no co-op then there doesnt need to be a multiplayer in my opinion.
  • Would have been nice, but a fully focused on campaign sounds good to

  • Disappointing for sure, especially since they're talking about having multiplayer. Oh well. She seems to be competent enough that I won't think about it too much.

  • This may be disappointing but it doesn't really bother me. I really don't think co-op is necessary.

  • Doesn't concern me really.  If they do have co-op, I hope they have are seperate levels or a Horde-like mode.  I could imagine multiplayer being survivor group vs survivor group as they fight to smuggle resources as they fend of infected.
