Job Description

The ESPN Mobile Product Development team is responsible for supporting a diverse collection of mobile products including downloadable applications, mobile web sites, and messaging products. Working in concert with the product management and editorial teams, the Manager, Mobile Technology (Client Application Development) leads the technical architecture, development and support of components of ESPN mobile applications and technical initiatives, with a focus on delivering only the highest possible quality experiences, which serve the diverse needs of sports, across the wide range of mobile devices and operating systems.
This position requires expert knowledge of mobile client-side technologies, specifically iOS (Cocoa Touch) or Android (Java + Android SDK) and broad knowledge of modern web stack technologies (presentation, caching, app, DB, networking). Knowledge of any of the following will be helpful: Windows Phone 7, Windows 8, Blackberry SDKs, digital video formats and distribution protocols, handset/OS idiosyncrasies, and SMS/messaging protocols.

This position requires highly hands-on technical design and development management as well as management of a development team, and working closely with external and internal development partners.

The successful candidate will manage multiple projects with long and short development cycles, and will establishing and supporting components that can be used across all mobile app development within the company. This person will also serve as a technology leader both within the mobile group, and more broadly across ESPN. This includes building on the software engineering culture, refining and enforcing development standards and processes, and working with other groups within ESPN on mobile and data-platform best practices.

Responsibilities
 Lead client-side application development activities for new products and updates to existing products.  Design and development of platform components (e.g. ads, usage tracking, login/registration) for use across ESPN Digital Media by all teams building mobile products.  Define technical and non-functional requirements.  Management of in-house development team as well as working with external development partners and mobile industry partners.  Breaks down product requirements into scope documents to establish Level of Effort estimates.  Breaks down projects into individual tasks for execution by team members.  Works on development processes and technical initiatives, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions.  Ensures that related teams (QA, editorial, ad ops, systems engineering, etc.) are fully engaged and unblocked.  Is known and relied upon across the mobile team as the go-to person for their products and technologies.  Making reasoned and practical recommendations on hardware and software acquisition, technology vendor selection process and subsequent vendor management  Accountable for building products that satisfy ESPN requirements for scalability, reusability, and reliability.  Frequent communication with the mobile leadership, product managers, sales and marketing, and editorial staff for direction, strategy, and priority.

Basic Qualifications
 Minimum of 4 total years professional experience including a minimum of 2 years in a tech lead role.  Expert-level experience programming in Java + Android SDKs or Objective C + Cocoa Touch, and fluency with all web stack technologies - HTML, CSS, Javascript, J2EE, and SQL.  Expert-level understanding of multi-tier web architectures, and OO design patterns and concepts.  Experience managing multiple projects comprising short and long development cycles without supervision.  Experience writing technical design docs and driving them through development.  Excellent written and oral communication skills ensuring zero ambiguity and clear direction in a manner suiting the audience.  Very strong technical leadership including direct and dotted-line supervisory responsibility.

Required Education
 The candidate should have a BS, BA, or advanced degree in computer science, engineering or related field, or relevant work experience.
