Netflix
For decades, television has been used as a babysitter by parents desperate to get dinner on the table or for a few minutes of calm amidst the drama of child rearing. But instead of channel surfing, kids today are increasingly surfing the digital library of Netflix to get their cartoon fix.
“John Carter” was one of the biggest film flops of all time. The special-effects-heavy sci-fi epic set on Mars turned out to be an epic box office failure in the U.S. for Disney, leading to a shakeup of company executives. Even as audiences largely ignored the film, “John Carter” finds itself at the center of a battle between Disney on one side and Netflix and Redbox on the other.
As a purely financial matter, Netflix’s quarterly report should not have precipitated the absolute shellacking that the company’s stock suffered after-hours Monday, wiping out about $1 billion in shareholder equity.

The sun is quickly setting on Netflix’s streaming partnership with Starz. As previously reported, the two companies couldn’t hammer out a deal and, as a result, some 1,000 or so Starz titles — many from Sony and Disney — will be pulled from the Netflix catalog this week.
