Some of the best Google doodles

St David's Day, the celebration of the patron saint of Wales, has been marked with a colourful Welsh-themed Google Doodle. Here the Telegraph looks at other major doodles.

Francois Truffaut, the film critic and director who brought the French New Wave to cinema, would have celebrated his 80th birthday today and has been honoured with a Google doodle.

Nicolas Steno, known as the "father of geology" for his theory that layers of rock are formed horizontally had a Google Doodle featuring rock formations to celebrate his 374th birthday last month.

Charles Addams, who created the Addams family, had a Google Doodle of his most famous creation on 7th January to commemorate the centenary of his birth.

In September 2011, Google created an interactive doodle that allowed users to control digital puppets to celebrate what would have been the 75th birthday of the Muppets creator Jim Henson (below).

The 115th anniversary of the discovery of the x-ray was commemorated in November 2010 with an x-ray of the company's logo with bones and other items inside it.

Diego Rivera, the Mexican artist known for his fresco work, had his 125th birthday marked with a doodle of a mural in December last year.

Mark Twain received a Google Doodle apparently depicting a scene from his famous novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, to mark his 176th birthday in November last year.

A comet soaring round planets on strings was created to mark the 335th birthday of Edmond Halley, the astronomer who gave his name to Halley's Comet, in November last year.

A piece of art depicting the Polish-French physicist Marie Curie at work was put on Google's homepage to mark her 144th birthday in November.

Earlier this month Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was honoured with a Google doodle marking the 155th anniversary of his birth.

In August 2010, the company created the モcreepiest doodle everヤ to mark the 213th birthday of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley.
