Aftermath of deadly attack on pro-regime Syrian TV channel

Gunmen have stormed the headquarters of a Syrian pro-government news channel, planting explosives and killing three employees, according to state media.

Syrian state media reported that the terrorists planted explosive devices in the headquarters of al-Ikhbariya after ransacking the studios of the satellite channel, including the newsroom, which was reportedly destroyed.

State media also reported that three people were killed in the attack, without giving details.

"They committed a real massacre when they killed Syrian journalists and civilian employees in this building. Also when they killed the security officers and the employees at the reception. What happened this morning is a real massacre," said Syrian Information Minister Orman al-Zoubi, speaking on Syrian TV.

The Syrian press is tightly regulated by the Ministry of Information. Although Ikhbariya is privately owned, opponents of President Bashar al-Assad say it is a government mouthpiece.

During the 16-month-old pro-democracy revolt against the Assad family's four-decade rule, Ikhbariya has been pushing to counter what it says is a campaign of misinformation by western and Arab satellite channels on the uprising, which it describes as a foreign-backed terrorist conspiracy.

Ikhbariya resumed broadcasting shortly after the attack.
