Australian Research Organization to Deploy Mellanox InfiniBand


HAMBURG, Germany, June 18 -- Mellanox Technologies, Ltd., a leading supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data center servers and storage systems, today announced that the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, has selected Mellanox’s end-to-end FDR InfiniBand solution for their new accelerated cluster, including SwitchX SX6025 switches, ConnectX-3 adapters, Unified Fabric Manager (UFM) and cables. CSIRO chose Mellanox’s robust, high-speed interconnect solution due to its scalability, low power consumption, and high-efficiency data handling that utilizes the latest GPUDirect and CORE-Direct acceleration technologies.

“With industry server upgrades such as the new Intel architecture, it was apparent that we needed to upgrade our interconnect solution for better performance, scalability and return on investment,” said Brian Davis, ASC Cluster Services Manager at CSIRO. “Mellanox FDR InfiniBand, GPUDirect and CORE-Direct acceleration technologies provided the solution we needed. This technology helps to ensure our users will have a high performance level for their research and development.”

“Mellanox will provide CSIRO with the fastest InfiniBand technology and capabilities of PCI-Express 3.0 to enable the highest productivity of the new compute intensive cluster,” said Marc Sultzbaugh, vice president of worldwide sales at Mellanox Technologies. “Mellanox FDR InfiniBand interconnect solutions, performance acceleration technologies, such as CORE-Direct and the support for GPUDirect, future proof CSIRO’s investment and provide their users superior application performance with the most advanced high-performance computing infrastructure.”

The new CSIRO HPC Cluster was awarded to XENON Systems, the local Australian Mellanox partner who specializes in the deployment of High Performance Computing solutions to leading Australian and New Zealand research organizations.

TOP500 Gets Dressed Up with New Blue Genes

The 39th TOP500 list was released today at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, with a new machine at the top. Sequoia, an IBM Blue Gene/Q machine, delivered a world record 16 petaflops on Linpack, knocking RIKEN's 10-petaflop K Computer into second place. The Japanese K machine had held the TOP500 title for a year.

Intel Will Ship Knights Corner Chip in 2012

On Monday at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Intel announced that Knights Corner, the company's first manycore product, would be in production before the end of 2012. The company also released a few more details about the upcoming product line, including the creation of a new Xeon brand for the architecture, some performance updates on pre-production silicon, and Cray's adoption of MIC as part of its future Cascade supercomputer.
