Amazon readying smartphone to compete with Apple, Google?

Amazon is reportedly dialing up its battle with Apple and Google by developing its own smartphone.

The Internet retail giant is working with hardware maker Foxconn to create a device to challenge the iPhone and Android-based phones, sources tell Bloomberg. The company is also beefing up its porfolio of patents covering wireless technologies to head off expected legal challenges, other sources told Bloomberg.

CNET has contacted Amazon for comment and will update this report when we learn more.

This isn't the first time we've heard rumblings of Amazon working on a smartphone of its own. Citigroup analysts suggested more

Korea gets quad-core Samsung Galaxy S3 on LTE

Seems like customers in Korea will have their LTE and eat it, too.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, globally offered as a quad-core device without LTE, will now be available with LTE capabilities on Monday for three Korean carriers: KT, LG U+, and SK Telecom.

In the United States, major carriers (save for T-Mobile) do offer the S3 on LTE, but these models are powered by a dual-core CPU instead.

Looks like someone at Motorola jumped the gun on the Atrix HD.

Earlier this morning, a splash page that included specs and a sign-up button for Motorola's Atrix HD appeared on the company's Web site. It has since been removed.

Codenamed "Dinara," the latest handset in the Atrix lineup is splash resistant and has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor.

Judging from some of the Facebook status updates that I have the misfortune of seeing every day, many people don't do nearly enough to keep their phones secure.

Judge rejects Samsung bid to lift Galaxy Nexus sales ban

A federal judge today denied a Samsung request to lift a ban on U.S. sales of its Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh, who last week granted Apple's request for the preliminary injunction, said there was insufficient evidence to stay the injunction for the duration of a Samsung appeal.

Koh ordered the preliminary injunction on Friday, granting a motion Apple made in February that alleged Samsung infringed on several of its patents. The injunction, which would keep the Samsung device from being sold in stores in the U.S., can go into effect as more

Best smartphones for $100 (roundup)

A hundred greenbacks is a respectable chunk of change, but when it comes to personal electronics like the ultra-personal smartphone, $100 is a darn good deal. Since the smartphone operating system remains the same across handsets from the most entry-level to the most premium, what a price hike usually gives you is a step up in features -- like LTE or HSPA+ 42 support, a faster processor, and more premium camera components, for example.

Here are some of today's top picks.

Apple fails in bid for emergency import ban of HTC phones

Imports of HTC phones into the United States will continue after a U.S. judge denied Apple's request for a sales ban on the devices in an ongoing patent dispute between the companies.

The U.S. International Trade Commission launched an investigation on Sunday into Apple's claim that HTC was continuing to infringe on one of its patents in violation of a December order to cease. The ITC, a federal agency with the power to ban imports of devices found to infringe on U.S. patents, today rejected Apple's request for an emergency order banning the importation more
