HTC stops sales, operations in Brazil

HTC is pulling out of Brazil after failing to capitalize on the growing market, blog AndroidPIT reported today.

According to the blog, the company is shutting down operations in Brazil, laying off dozens of workers, and stopping the wholesale of its devices. HTC has promised to continue its customer support in the market, AndroidPIT said.

The company did not immediately respond to an e-mail from CNET, but an HTC representative told AndroidPIT that the company made the decision after "analyzing the sales numbers." When we hear back from HTC, we'll update this post.

Wait for Windows Phone 8 or buy a Samsung Galaxy S3?

Microsoft's newest mobile OS -- Windows Phone 8 -- will add some key functionality to Microsoft's smartphones, but is it worth waiting for?

The new software offers a few more bells and whistles in terms of functionality for smartphone subscribers. But the bigger deal is that it will offer the necessary hooks for developers and device makers to build more advanced hardware. Finally, this could mean that Microsoft's live tile interface may finally be installed on some heavily spec'ed devices.

In this edition of Ask Maggie I help one reader figure out if he should wait more

A look at HTC's planned Windows Phone 8 lineup

It's official. Windows Phone 8 does have other good friends in the mobile world besides Nokia.

The Verge is reporting information from a "knowledgeable source" that says the Taiwan-based company is planning three lines of smartphones that will run Microsoft's new mobile OS. While the "Rio," "Accord," and "Zenith" lines sound like inexpensive cars dressed up with sexy names, they've got some heft under the hood, er... battery.

Apple, Samsung again swallow all the smartphone profits

There's no stopping Apple or Samsung Electronics.

The two companies again dominated the smartphone industry, combining to capture 55 percent of the market and 90 percent of the profits in the first quarter, according to a study by ABI Research.

The numbers only further illustrate the growing divide between Apple, Samsung and everyone else. While Samsung leads the industry with 43 million smartphones shipped, Apple remains the leader when it comes to making money off of its products. The iPhone 4S continues to be the single best selling phone at most carriers, while Samsung's Galaxy S III line more

HTC looks to expand patent portfolio in wake of Apple setback

HTC has faced some serious setbacks in its patent battle with Apple. But that won't stop the company from getting back up and continuing the fight.

Speaking to reporters at the HTC 15th anniversary ceremony yesterday, Chairwoman Cher Wang said her company "will apply for patents in different fields, and we will also purchase different kinds of patents, such as those owned by S3 Graphics Co." Wang's comments at the company's new headquarters in New Taipei City, Taiwan, were first reported by The China Post.

Just how well did Nokia's Lumia 900 do?

Despite a mountain of hype and support behind it, Nokia's Lumia 900 was no blockbuster.

Recent data and comments suggest the phone performed well, but not great. After a strong start, sales petered. While AT&T; was initially enthusiastic about the Lumia 900, it isn't saying much about the phone now.

More importantly, the Lumia 900 failed to break into the minds of consumers and establish Windows Phone as a heavyweight in the smartphone industry, behind only Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Still, the phone did well enough to keep Nokia in the game, even if more

HTC: Low-end smartphones would spoil our brand

In the pot of struggling smartphone makers, it seems like a logical move to push towards the emerging market.

The rapidly-expanding population centers make Brazil, Russia, India and China -- BRIC countries -- an attractive point of interest for smartphone makers when they fall on hard times. Research in Motion made a push with low-end smartphones, and Nokia always has. There's a trend emerging.

As the third musketeer in the dwindling smartphone sales race, HTC is taking a different move by signalling a full-throttle-ahead approach in its existing high-end smartphone markets.

A smartphone shopper's dilemma: Wait for the next iPhone or go Android 4.0?

Google and Apple have upped their game in 2012, and a new crop of smartphones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Apple's new iOS 6 will offer consumers a tough choice when it comes to choosing a new phone.

Apple isn't expected to launch the next iPhone until the fall. But the company gave a preview of what's to come with the unveiling of iOS 6 mobile software this week at its WWDC conference in San Francisco. From what I can tell, the new iPhone will give the current crop of Android 4.0 devices more

HTC One S with S3 chip being offered in select European, Asian markets

HTC has confirmed with The Verge that it is using a lower-powered Snapdragon S3 chipset for the HTC One S in select European and Asian markets. Thanks to an unusually high demand for the Snapdragon S4 processor, HTC has instead opted for Qualcomm's S3 CPU in some instances.
