Mass Effect 3 endings: Extended Cut DLC introduces fourth "Refusal" option

BioWare sneakily folds in additional dialogue options

Mass Effect 3's Extended Cut DLC is rather more than just a wodge of epilogue cutscenes detailing Shepard's post-military career as a celebrity chef. It reportedly "tweaks" certain gameplay sequences and dialogue options, introducing what is effectively a full-blown fourth ending.

Can't be arsed to load up your Legendary save, battle through the Cerberus Base assault and experience the goods first-hand? Fear not, for we come bearing Youtube videos. You'll find all three original endings below, plus the fourth "Refusal" ending. Cheers, CVG.

  1. In my mocking I accidently did this ending by going gun ho and shooting at anything. I was really happy with the EC it explained alot to me and I went and looked at the other endings after I had chosen the Destroy option again. They all seem like great options to choose now, I was even getting a little misty eyed after I had finished.

  2. So still no explanation of how everyone got from Earth to the Normandy, or why the Normandy is running like their lives depend on it? And despite seeing Mass Relays blown into a million pieces suddenly they are only 'damaged' in all three endings?

This looks to me not so much a case of replying to critism as it is someone pointed out a HUGE oversight on the part of the writers that would have resulted in the homeworld's of every race being destroyed and kill the franchise stone dead from a point of view of sequels and EA thought "Shit, better not kill the relays."

Like that they included the refuse option though. That was missing.

    ::::SPOILERS::::

I think there is a possibility you missed some cutscenes. I reloaded the "new" save after watching the destroy ending, and on re-entering the beam, I got a longer cutscene with Admiral Hackett being given a report re: Shepard reaching the beam. This didn't play the first time through - I have no idea why, since it's the same Shepard - same readiness etc.

During my first run, Tali (the LI) and EDI were shown being wounded on the charge to the beam. Shepard calls for an evac, and the Normandy itself swoops in and they board. There was a touching bit of dialogue between Shepard and Tali, then the Normandy lifts off and leaves. Harbinger's laser then hits Shepard and the infamous Marauder Shields bit starts. That whole cutscene is likely to vary depending on your squad, LI, etc.

After Shepard triggers the Crucible, there is another cutscene showing Hackett ordering the fleet to withdrawl as the Crucible is powering up. It shows Joker and some of your squadmates reluctant to leave Shepard behind.

Did you not get either of those? Coz they fill those massive plotholes quite well. Sort of.

  4. I liked every one of these new endings, easily pleased I guess :)

  5. Haha golli did you shoot the child too? I'm having to do the ending again because shooting the child starts the refusal one.

Spoilers obvs, if you're in this thread it goes without saying.

It explained a lot, and may even prove the indoctrination theory very very very very true. From the moment 'Anderson' says Shepard, you are woken up suddenly with a growl and some sort of electric spasm. Then after shooting child in the face Harbinger says 'so be it!' Doing the destroy option now for canon for my shep, but it really has answered everything I needed answering so far.

Problem is I don't have shepard living galactic readiness rating, anyone seen that yet?

  6. right now i am happy that i chose the Destroy ending for the simple reason that is.... SHEPARDS ALIVE!!!!! AND THE GALAXY REBUILDS AND YOUR SQUAD ESCAPE THE PLANET!!!!!! cos the last of closure on the last 2 points is what i hated.
i hearby declare the Destroy ending cannon

  7. Shepard living was in the actual ending anyway, all that has happened is bioware have shown what was to be assumed, and filled some plot holes in. You used to only get the shepard breathing bit if you got a high galactic readiness, seems now you don't need that.

Nope didn't get either of those, just a lot of stuff after the crash.

I felt that was the best overall option since it seems Shepard survives - but at the cost of EDI. Though you don't see her die, her name is on the memorial wall.

I do wonder though - during the synthesis ending, EDI says they might overcome mortality. Could that be a reference to a future possibility? I mean they've bought Shepard back once, they might as well do it again. One more story.

i know, i cried when i lost Mordon and Leigon, but i didnt feel as sad for EDI, mabey cos she didnt die heroicly sacrificeing her life for the greater good, to tell the truth i felt sadder for the Geth. but both Destroy and the Synthesis ending leave the possibloty of a spin off set after 3, in that you search for Shepard to bring him back, encouter a race from outside the Galaxy, and possibly find the reapers true origins (i have a thoery on that but its long) and what the hey, build a Death Star. cos Death Stars are cool. although i did want a corny "we save everyone" ending

  11. still don't get why you can hear shepards voice repeat what the boy says :?

  12. I played from the cerberus base attack and didnt see anything new till the london mission. Is there new scenes in the cerberus base??

  13. I guess I'm the only one who thought they were terrible and a waste of time then?

A lot of the problem with the original endings is that they were essentially the same with a few small differences, people felt cheated, now then, unless I just watched different videos to the ones you all saw, that;s what they done again. These 3 'new' endings all have the same basic scenes, with a few extra and a bit of terrible blurb telling you again what the consequences of your choices were. Well, I already knew what the consequences of each choice was, it's already explained in the game. If you're going to add new scenes, make them personal, actually answer some important questions, and make them different! The only one I had any interest in was the synthetic ending as it felt quite personal to Edi, which was nice. The others were fairly rubbish. Control= YAY I'm God, Destory=no different to what it already was, you just get a few more pointless scenes that mean nothing. The refuse ending was good to have though, it needed to be there, and the result suits the choice.

Overall, and epic waste of time that I'll never bother to download if I ever play the game again.

  14. I really liked the extended endings filled in alot of missing detail, but did not change anything. This is exactly what I wanted as I was quite happy with the old endings anyway. The most improved were the synthasis and control endings, I especially liked the control monologue by Shepard.
I do get the impression, probably wrongly that this was how they meant to end it (after the script change) but were under so much pressure from ea they could not afford another delay. The ending as it is now is much more in keeping with Biowares usual high standard.
The changed endings have made me start another play through with one of my other mass effect saves, if nothing else it has reminded me how much I have loved the series. I think it is great we got to play through this whole trilogy in one console generation.
I think a thank you has to go out to the hard working people at Bioware who have crafted such a great gaming experience with so many stand out moments over the three games. I think any media which brings out the emotions many people obviously have for it deserves respect and praise even if it didn't end exactly how you may have wanted.
Still a happy Bioware fan next up Dragon age 3

  15. The extended cut adds new cut scenes before you go into the Citadel. Depending on your EMS your squad mates will die or be seriously injured. Shepard orders the Normandy to evacuate them if they survive saying he wants someone to survive the battle. Even though they refuse he insists that they go. Once they evacuate Hackett orders all ships to retreat to their rally points beyond earth just in case it does extreme amounts of damage. Hay presto.

  16. Actually cried when I did the Destroy ending on my custom Shepard. That was it. I won and Shepard is Alive. All I needed. ME3 is now firmly my Best game ever once again. Bioware pulled it out of the bag.

  17. hi i love the mass effect games is there goin to be a mass effect 4 :o

  18. I chose the destroy ending and I liked the added scenes that explained how my team mates got off earth and why Joker was flying through the relays, I youtubed the other endings...again very similar to each other with few new scenes and different voice overs. The lamest part has to be the stills of the characters like Jacob, Miranda, jack etc.

I think Bioware just couldn't pull it out of the bag, they made too much work for themselves with all the decisions of 3 games relying on them. Seems they they went for the easiest option, have 3 endings that have similar consequences to avoid having to make multiple endings showing how Shepard's decisions affect each race and significant characters.

If the mass effect franchise continues it will be interesting to see if we get to choose what universe we want to play in...the one where the reapers are destroyed, the one where they are controlled and the one where synthesis took place...again something Bioware could mess up as potentially they have to create 3 different universes...unless we continue from the Refusal ending with knowledge of the reapers and the war against them.

  19. Well I haven't seen the endings yet on Youtube like I intended to, but I have read enough spoilers to hopefully form an opinion. I had no problem with the three choices, Space Kid, any of that - it was the lack of logic, the plot holes and lore-breaking creative decisions that hurt the endings for me. It seems to me that BioWare have plugged all the gaps in narrative and logic and actually made the endings better and more meaningful. So much so that I have changed my mind about wanting to play the games again... I now have a Paragon Femshep hunting for Saren. And so it begins... Damn it, BioWare are making me halfway like them again.

One more thing though - ALL OF THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE. But I think it's obvious BioWare are very aware of that, and always have been.
