Mad Riders Review

Techland follows up nail'd with a budget racing gem

Because a full-priced sequel to nail'd was about as desired as a bubonic plague revival, Techland has taken the opportunity to introduce its comparatively pretty quad racer to Xbox Live Arcade. While that might sound like an opportunity to not click download instead of an opportunity to not hand over hard cash, Mad Riders is actually the better of the two games.

It's structured far more intelligently than its full-priced predecessor. There's a healthy number of new tracks, modes and skills to unlock, and they're drip-fed to you at a reasonable pace, giving a genuine sense of reward after clocking a tournament. Environments are reused, but not in such a way that you're constantly whipping past the same clump of trees - there are 45 different configurations in total. It's a substantial package for 800MP.

Sadly, the floaty handling returns, which limits the feeling of tactile connection to the game. Similarly, while the simplistic trick system is adequate for boost hoarding in races, the stunt events are a fiddly chore. Techland still hasn't entirely 'nailed' it then, but you definitely won't feel robbed for the price.
