Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Review

Back once again with the quill behaviour

Of all the extended Sonic characters we're happy to welcome back, Tails is top of the extremely short list. He's just a decent chap. Bit sappy, maybe, but with a solid grounding in engineer work, he's got none of that ridiculous attitude that stinks up the Sonic brand. Rather than making this a simple keep-up sprint through the three new zones, Sonic can team up with Tails to perform combo moves.

Either player can press X in mid-air to combine into a Tails controlled helicopter, making the Tails role marginally more fun than Sonic himself. This is extremely useful, when you're about to drop into one of those annoying instadeath pits. Press X on the ground, and you'll grab each others' ankles and roll around together. Less useful, maybe - especially considering that you can't change direction - and pressing X on the ground instead of in the air might send you hurtling into that pit you intended to fly over.

Christmas has come early to Sonicland, apparently.
But after the juddering graphical beast that was Generations, Episode 2 is a return to the full frame rate, and it plays much more happily as a result. With three new worlds and nine new levels, the comparative ease is balanced by the time trials and perfection-hunting leaderboards.

Forget the terrible boss battles - it is written into the atoms of the universe that Sonic boss battles will always suck harder than a Dyson vacuum cleaner trying to take in a plate of spaghetti. It's a smooth, slippery Sonic that takes another step away from it's single-button origins without losing any of the hog essense. With local and online co-op, it offers just enough entertainment to justify its steep episodic price.

  1. tails can team up with tails?????

  2. I get the feeling you're going to get a lot of "Call that a review?" comments, and fairly so. Considering the overwhelmingly negative fan reaction to Episode 1 (I personally enjoyed it, but there was no denying it had no place in the numbered Sonic series, and was much closer to Sonic Rush) some time actually addressing physics, level design, etc might have turned this into a worthwhile review. As it stands, you've managed to use rather few words to say even less.

  3. No mention of the Metal Sonic levels you unlock if you already have episode 1?

  4. Three new worlds? Nine new levels? If you beat those 3 worlds you would of noticed a 4th world with 3 more levels and a boss AND a final zone with one level and a boss. You might find the price tag a little less harsh if you realised there's more content than you reviewed.

  5. Incredibly sloppy review guys, what happened? It doesn't link at all, just reads like 4 randomly selected paragraphs from a bigger article, and it was full of typos and actual gaps of information as pointed out by the posts above.

I've come to respect the thoroughness with which you guys write your articles, and this is a huge disappointment from you right now.

I know all this info is put up for free on the website, and I appreciate that and buy the mag, but it just doesn't reflect well at all, in my opinion.

  6. There's definitely some paragraphs missing from this review. It barely makes any sense. Where's the summary?
Stuff like this makes me glad I don't buy the magazine any more.

  7. Yes it is a very short review but will probably be longer in the mag.
At least you guys gave it the score it deserves. Most websites that have reviewed this game said it Episode 2 was better than Episode 1, yet gave it a lower review score which makes no sense.
At least you guys gave it an 8 like you did Episode 1.
Episode 2 is better than 1. The graphics and physics are much improved, the music is better, I enjoyed the added co-op, it has more challenging boss fights and with the Metal Sonic story it is a longer game.
If you like platformers I recommend it.
