That's not drowning

Drowning does not look like what most people expect it to look like.

No trashing,
No cries,
No splashing,
Only quiet.

Most people won't realize the person near them is drowning.
This enlightening article on what drowning looks like may change the way you watch your children the next time they go swimming.

I do this every night, before sleeping. I put on my headphones, and listen with my eyes closed, in the darkness of my room.

I sit... and I listen.

I listen to my favorite classical pieces, metal, works of beauty. Sometimes I lie down, but usually I sit down, with the monitor off, and let the music reach my soul.

At night, alone, in the darkness is the place where you can really listen.

To really listen you must blind yourself

This afternoon I dropped by the Mashable/Scribd Davos Documented media house where I listened to +Pete Cashmore interview a panel about SOPA and ACTA. Good stuff, which you'll see on +Mashable soon, I'm sure.

On the walk back to my hotel I had to walk up a fairly dark street and on the left there was an alley lit by candles with a woman holding a sign that said...

Teenage delinquents hackers are using "The Mosquito"[1] ringtones to avoid having to turn off their cellphones in class (among... other things).

The ringtones are of high frequencies (~17kHz), so adults such as teachers cannot hear them.

However, you may still be able to hear them even if you are over 20 (or 30 or 40), according to the comments here:
http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2010/10/hearing-loss-test/

[1] "The Mosquito" was invented to keep delinquent teenagers [every teen is a juvenile delinquent] from certain areas. (I personally consider this a Human Rights violation! :))
A high-pitched alarm which cannot be heard by adults has been hijacked by schoolchildren to create ringtones so they can get away with using phones in class. Techno-savvy pupils have adapted the Mosqu...

I'm against SOPA / PIPA, and here is why.

I think that we, the architects of the internet, are able to create bottom-up solutions for current and future problems. A good example of this is Creative Commons, and here I am at Google talking about how it affects "piracy" in my world of digital photography. this video should jump ahead to 11:48 automatically

One should be able to pass this test without too much difficulty with a perfect score if they are a musician (assuming they haven't poked holes in their ears) by determining which tone is higher or lower in frequency.

http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2010/03/can-you-hear-like-an-audio-engineer/

This one will be harder to pass as it requires a person to differentiate between fractions of a decibel.

http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2010/03/sound-challenge-can-you-hear-which-is-louder/

But can you pass this? (I could not, even with my $80 headphones.) The great audiophile 128kbps vs 320kbps MP3 debate.

http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/mp3-sound-quality-test-128-320/
Audio Engineering requires an extremely discerning ear. This little listening and hearing test is to see if you can pick up subtle differences in pitch.
