Asian immigrants to U.S. surpass Hispanics for first time

    (Jeff Chiu/AP)

Asians have surpassed Hispanics as the largest group of new immigrants to the United States, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center.

The study, called "The Rise of Asian Americans" and released on Tuesday, reveals that Asian-Americans also have the highest income, are the best educated and are the fastest-growing racial group in America.

About 430,000 Asians—or 36 percent of all new immigrants—arrived in the United States in 2010, according to U.S. census data. About 370,000, or 31 percent, were Hispanic.

[Related: U.S. Census: Minority babies now majority, surpassing whites for first time]

The wave of incoming Asians pushed the total number of Asian-Americans to a record 18.2 million, or 5.8 percent of the total U.S. population, according to census data. By comparison, non-Hispanic whites (197.5 million) account for 63.3 of the U.S. population, while Hispanics (52 million) and non-Hispanic blacks (38.3 million) account for 16.7 percent and 12.3 percent, respectively.

The influx of Asians reflects "a slowdown in illegal immigration while American employers increase their demand for high-skilled workers," the Associated Press said.

    (Pew)

"The educational credentials of these recent [Asian] arrivals are striking," the report said. Sixty-one percent of 25-to-64-year-old Asian immigrants come with at least a bachelor's degree—more than double non-Asian immigrants, making the recent Asian arrivals "the most highly educated cohort of immigrants in U.S. history."

[Also read: The full Pew report]

The study also found that Asian-Americans are "more satisfied than the general public with their lives, finances and the direction of the country, and they place a greater value on marriage, parenthood, hard work and career success."

Last month, data released by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that there were more minority children born in the United States than whites for the first time in history—signaling what the Washington Post called "the dawn of an era in which whites no longer will be in the majority."

According to the census report, 50.4 percent of children born in a 12-month period that ended July 2011 were Hispanic, black, Asian-American or from other minority groups, while non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 percent of all births in that span. In 2010, minority babies accounted for 49.5 percent of all births.

If America wants to remain number one the only thing it needs is education. A highly educated future generation can fix any problems tomorrow. A dumb future generation will create so many problems tomorrow there is no point fixing any today.

So they can be educated while they have no employment waiting for them.
      • Patriot 22 hrs ago
Yea they can because they will create the employment.
      • Gruner 20 hrs ago
And Patriot...with all these educated folks employed or creating employment, who will pick the crops, clean the toilets, pour the concrete???

Correction from the editor: LEGAL Asian immigrants overtake legal Hispanic immigrants. Meanwhile, illegals are flooding the country at a breakneck pace.

I am a Chinese-American and came here legally at the age 13. I graduated high school here and joined the U.S. Marine Corps to save college money. Been to the Iraq War twice and came back. Honorably discharged and went to school with my VA education money and earned a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. Now working at the Army Corps of Engineers, continuing serving our country and society.

      Not all immigrants are unproductive.

Asian immigrants are NEVER unproductive (well, there might be a few). I'm married into an Asian family and they all came here legally. They are also doctors, lawyers, and business people. They are a hard working and wonderful group of people.

The MAJOR difference between the Asian immigrants are that they come here LEGALLY! They are extremely polite, well mannered and do NOT expect, demand, or insist on HANDOUTS of any sort! They EARN all that have and are very hard working, caring citizens. Unlike the ILLEGALS who are here ILLEGALLY and are doing nothing but SUCKING our system dry! I have NO problem with anyone coming here LEGALLY! They become citizens, pay taxes, serve in Our armed forces, etc. Illegals do NOT do that. They are a FINANCIAL BURDEN TO ALL TAXPAYERS! And, btw... Thank you very much Jun Yan for protecting this great nation. You are a wonderful reminder of Why and How the American Dream works when it is done Legally/Correctly! May life be always sweet and happy for you!

It seems the biggest difference between Asians and typical Americans is the level of respect and morals taught at a young age. I wonder how long it will take before people realize that getting every thing you want handed to you and not being held accountable doesn't work.

We need to teach our children ethics and morality. Once the children learn and adhere to ethcs and not succumb to greed and foul play, they will understand God and realize him. " Self purification has an infectious effect on the surroundings" said Mahatma Gandhi. Just as water falls from the top, we as parents must set examples and through examples it is easier to inculcate the values in life. After teaching for 25 years at one of the top ivey league university, I am teaching high school students physics and mathematics. Almost one in 10 uses the word F.. as though it is like Kellog cereal or Quack oats in the morning. Very sad indeed!

Don't worry Guard Wife. They will be American soon and then they will suck just like the rest of us. Americanism is a virus. It will spread.

I don't know about "respect". I can say, while at the Supermarket, I've probably been run into by the person in back of me's shopping cart with not so much as a "sorry" or "sowwy" about 3 times in my life, and all three of them were Asians.

Flawed data. Only counting LEGAL Hispanic immigration, not the illegal.

The author of this article forgot to mention that these Asians who are here legally PAID to be here after waiting in line.

Who cares if they are Hispanic or Asian... as long as they come to this country LEGALLY!!!
    • Terry  •  20 hrs ago
Stop worrying about immigrants and start deporting citizens already in this country who don't care enough about it to vote!
    • Jim  •  El Paso, Texas  •  2 days 1 hr ago
I don't care what the "racial" breakdown is. They came here because of the opportunities that the United States has for all of it's citizens and legal immigrants. So long as they came here legally through a port of entry with the proper paperwork and were legally issued a resident allien card, welcome to The United States of America.

while most of the notes here support the asian influx over the hispanic influx because of their education level. what these fools dont realize is that these highly educated asians will compete for their jobs better than the hispanic ones who are just seeking a better upward mobile lifestyle. we need both.

Generally speaking, Asian parents instill self-discipline in their offspring at a very early age. They do it in a respectful and natural manner without resorting to abuse or connivery. Generally speaking, most non-Asian parents leave this up to the school system...a huge mistake.

As per this article, Asians are well educated and want to be successful in America ...then they would be overwhelmingly conservative and prefer Republican principles...they appear to have a work ethic and would prefer to really achieve, not looking for a meager existance on the government welfare plantation, like the Obama democrats.

I am happy with that..maybe they will keep America from becoming a third world anti-technological country......we already have enough pizza delivery boys and office cleaners, we need some mathemeticians and engineers and doctors...becuase the predominantly White Christian Right from middle America is preaching that Science is the equivalent of the Devil..so of course white folks are getting dumber and dumber sorry to say...and are to blame for their own poor educational values.... and dont even get me started on the inner city hiphop generation, a total lost case of welfare-abusing, weed-smoking parasites on America...

If public schools are so bad, why do Asian children do so well in those same schools and go on to college and break records on SAT tests?

I dont think this is entirely accurate, in that a LOT of people here illegally (particularly those
from central/south america) didn't bother filling out their census forms and just tossed them in the garbage. We'd see apartment complex debris boxes in the "little mexico" part of town often referred to as "The Canal" loaded with blank, discarded census forms, and blowing all
over the parking lots. If its from the government, and even if it says "anonymous" on it,
illegals are simply going to toss it. They're not going to bother with it.
