Command & Conquer goes free-to-play today

EA-developed MMO strategy game Tiberium Alliance has entered open beta phase.

Command & Conquer: Generals 2 isn't expected to mobilize until 2013, but the franchise has movement on the free-to-play front today. Today, EA confirmed that Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances has entered its open beta phase, with players now able to log in to the game's servers through its official website.

Developed by EA's Phenomic studio, Tiberium Alliance is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online strategy game. As the name suggests, choosing whom to trust and when will play an important role in Tiberium Alliances, as players will be pitted against one another, as well as mutant enemy forces.

EA is promising "a completely interactive and dynamic gameplay experience," with in-game social and news feeds updated in real time. In the next few months, the game will run in Web browsers and on mobile devices with support for cross-platform play.

Acquired in 2006 in the wake of its SpellForce games, Phenomic has previously made EA efforts like BattleForge and Lord of Ultima.

I just hope this isn't like Stronghold Kingdoms. Pay2Win combined with spending months building yourself up only to have everything completely destroyed and forced to start from scratch because someone destroyed your castle. Months completely wasted because someone Payed2Win.

i dont even follow EA games anymore cause i know they will disappoint me. EA destroying PC gaming, 1 game at a time... well done

F2P with EA involved means they'll charge you an insane amount of money in the end. Pass.

Still waiting for the remake of C&C4;

From the sounds of these comments, this game is just another sucky facebook game. But in all honesty, I couldn't get into the series before, so I can't complain. I guess I was always more of an Age of Empires guy. Too bad AOEO was awful, too...

@linmukal I agree for the most part, but you get a few games that are pretty good just because they started as a game you pay for and then went f2p

Id rather play C&C3; but nobody is on it anymore. This doesnt look like my cup of tea.

@Vambran most of the time you're right. Alot of the work of free to play is finding the ones with balanced (and fair) microtransaction models. The BEST ones allow money to only affect cosmetics, anything else imbalances the game.

lol, i remember playing the original C&C;, now that was badass, it's still a masterpiece after red alert 2 C&C; basically died (Generals was ok...) EA can try to milk all it want, not falling for it. RIP Westwood

If my Avatar is any indication, EA can go suck a fat one for all I care. You're trying to murder my favorite RTS series of all time next to Starcraft, you money grubbing motherf*****s. You can't butter me up by promising a new C&C; game that wont suck. You should STILL be ashamed for Tiberium Twilight.

Free to play most of the time is just pure badness. Just make something worth paying for and people will pay for it. Even the exceptions to this rule I'd rather buy one time and be done with it. I hate being nickeled and dimed to death. Must...suppress...rant...about... DLC...

Im kinda of leery of Free-to-play games. They often have no single player and give advantage to players that shell out money for DLC in MP.

I feel like I am coaxing the RTS genre to climb up a hill. "Go for it, little buddy! You can make it!"

EA can you please just make Red Alert 2 go freeware and let the franchise die.

and another game with 20 people playing because of how lame it turns out. Free2play = wasted game potential 99% of the time. Its a bummer. Tribes Ascend is one of the few games doing it right for once.

The reason it's "Free to play" is because no one wants to play it. I use to love the series but now it's just a shell of it's former self.

Every EA "Free to play!" game that I've tried has been handled terribly IMO. I very much doubt that this game will be an exception. There are some genuinely great F2P games out there, but EA gives the business model a bad name. No thanks.

@RadView yes, It is still in development process :?

I'm insanely disappointed by this one; I was hoping for an MMORTS in the vein of C&C; Gold, and instead, I get a grid-based, turn-based "strategy" game that isn't worth the trouble to try. Boo, EA. As it happens, multiplayer client Westwood Chat WAS a social experience back in the day, and people would spend all sorts of time socializing while lining up matches for C&C; and RA. I know I made plenty of friends playing way back then. Don't sully the brand with this garbage.

I was excited to hear about an MMO C&C;, but then I tried it. It's just another web browser 'strategy' game, where you slowly build towns and gather resources over time. Lame. It's free to play, but pay to win.

checked it out, seen a lot of other games like this on facebook

Not very optimistic on this one, sounds like they're making a rival to C&C4;'s abysmal experience (not to mention that you probably have to pony up "teh moniez" to get anywhere), but I hope I'm wrong.

First time I'm hearing of this, EA's gotta get the word out.

First time I'm hearing about this C&C; MMO. I deplore the title used for this news article though, since we all know the original Command & Conquer has been free to play for several years now.

Not too excited after the crap EA pulled this last months
