EA explains Command & Conquer's Warhammer 40K tanks
Publisher says suspiciously similar designs for Tiberium Alliances were accidentally released concept art that won't ever see inclusion in the actual game.
Electronic Arts' free-to-play Command & Conquer game Tiberium Alliances made headlines this week for apparently appropriating tank designs from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000, but the publisher today told GameSpot that the flap was the result of an accidental exposure of concept art rather than an act of intellectual property theft.
"Games Workshop and EA are aware of the IP issues around the artwork in question, which have now been resolved," an EA representative said. "The artwork was internal EA concept art that was unintentionally released publicly. No Warhammer 40,000 tanks have ever made an appearance in Command and Conquer: Tiberium Alliances, and never will. Games Workshop and EA continue to have a strong relationship working together on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning and the new free to play game Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes which just entered open beta."
The issue first surfaced when Reddit users Bro-jangles and corevirus posted pictures underscoring the similarities between Grinder and Bombard tanks featured in Tiberium Alliances' promotional art and Warhammer 40,000's Ork Bonecruncha and Imperial Guard Baneblade vehicles.
Welllllllllllllllllll isn't that just ...convenient!!
anyway I'm cool if they wanted to take some "ideas" from DoW universe, but I always felt that the C&C; world is much more.... realistic and thus real world tanks and weapons should be considered.
Oh reddit, anything for a story..
Concept art can simply be for reference or inspiration, especially early in the design process. Only later does it need to be worked into truly original designs. An accidental release of early concept work sounds plausible to me.
EA can say what they want...big company always does...
Does anyone think this is actually enough to convince us that they're NOT ripping off anything?? Making an article about complicating a simple denial is just sad....
miss the old days of zero hours .
EA isn't "evil", they're just big and likely full of bloviating execs looking for pet projects to take control of. Big company employees lack motivation because they feel removed from owning what they're making. EA should guarantee more autonomy to the companies they subsume rather than try and assimilate them completely.Centralize the accouting, marketing, IT, delivery, as corporate services, but leave creative and development in the hands of those that are more passionate about it. Unfortunately, the only metric conservative big companies look at is profit and beyond that they won't fix something if it ain't broke.
Right, so you're saying you've plans to copy from warhammer RIGHT from the CONCEPT stage.
@Mjc0961 EA ruins everything they touch. Bioware used to be a reputable wrpg developer. EA tries too hard to push commercialism and mainstream appeal into these otherwise niche genres.
@GamerOuTLaWz oh... good old days, we used to skip classes on high school to play this on a lan network... god that was fun :)
I'd rather EA explain why they bought Westwood, ruined them, and then ruined Command and Conquer.
CnC:Renegade, still the coolest and most addictive MP experience Ive had
EA should be banned from making games for this.
stupid bioware no match for awesome westwood
wtf is that really what c&c; has come down too? facebook/mobile looking game? man remember to good old days when i would play C&C; on my ps and pc, just sad now thanks EA.
Wow, they should have taken a cue from Blizzard in how to properly rip off Warhammer. You have to mix up the visual design a little more than THAT. Though, to be fair, the name changes are a little better than Blizzard's. "It's not a Waygate, it's a Gateway!"
@parrot_of_adun because WH40k has the most bad ass tanks of any universe.
Whatever happen to good old mammoth tanks EA?
Still doesn't make sense. Why would anyone working on a C&C; title want to emulate WH? I mean, nothing against them, but C&C; always had a cleaner feel than... Well, what amounts to a super technological medieval england. Granted, EA has never demonstrated any respect for the franchises they rip from their dying parent's hands.
Figured as much. There's so much in the way of borrowed material during the dev phase that it's surprising that this doesn't happen more often.
It's about time Games Workshop gets some of it's IPs respected. Activision/Blizzard would have gone ahead and used the concept art to make the actual units.
EA also gets dating advice from the singer "Shaggy"
I say that Electronic Arts only rescinded the updates because it got caught. If Electronic Arts really had been aware, those vehicles wouldn't even have made it into "promotional art".
The original CNC and Red Alert 1/2 games are forever the best. Generals was average, it's okay, but it plays too much like Warcraft/Starcraft and does not feel like CNC. If I want to play a Blizzard style RTS, I'd just play Blizzard's RTS. I want a Westwood style RTS dammit. CNC3 on the other hand was actually surprisingly good and retained many of Westwood's CNC style gameplay. It actually felt like CNC. It was great and gave me hope for the series. BUT NOPE. CNC4 came out and trashed the series. RA3 is the biggest joke of a game of all time. R.I.P. Command and Conquer.
So they name the company "Bioware Victory" because people likes Bioware. EA is truly draining all the prestige Bioware has on the market.
@SirNormanislost I am a lifelong C&C; player, and I couldn't give it higher recommendations.
Ah when I think how awesome C&C; games would have been if Westwood were still around to advance on their previous developments. I miss some of those old studios.
@Sgthombre no sadly i didnt... yeah i know its not the real bioware but their short trailer has more promise then any CnC ive seen for a while
I wonder if the day-one DLC in their games ended up there accidentally too.
@SirNormanislost Did you miss C&C3;? Also, BioWare isn't making Generals 2. It's being made by a completely separate company that EA renamed BioWare Victory.
everything after generals was utter s*** i miss the good old westwood.... since this is free to play i'll take a look but my money is on bioware and generals2
Who cares. EA killed Westwood and ruined Command and Conquer. One of the many, MANY sins they have committed against the gaming industry.
Whats so stupid about EA is they first bought "Westwood Studios" then ruined them and the Command&Conquer; game series, then EA buys Spell Force 1&2 developer "Phenomic" ending that great game series then have them work on Command&Conquer; games... I hate you EA...
I still prefer the original Westwood C&C; games
EA Destroying childhood games like C&C; for past 10 years.... they need to stop C&C; series as whole was great when westwood was behind it and no EA name was involved. soon as EA bought them out C&C; series became a joke and shell of its former glory. EA wont be content till they milk the series dry and killed its name.
