only 12-15 hours long, no free roam, way too many cut scenes and way too linear to be considered an epic AAA type rockstar game that we're accustomed to.

big time disappointment!

@buccomatic

ffs get a life you sad sad person..ridiculous

buccomatic , We are only paying $10 more for games than 5 years ago. Length does not make a good game or a value. Some free games are better than some AAA titles.

buccomatic 355 pts

max payne 3 is a complete waste of money, there's no way a 12 hour game is worth $60.00. think about it. you'll only be playing it for a couple days and then it's GAME OVER.

ghost recon is a way better deal, it has a long campaign and great multiplayer. you'll probably be playing it for months.

Kain_Darothic 20 pts

buccomatic You seriously need to get a life.

buccomatic 355 pts

Kain_Darothic no. rockstar just needs to go back to making epic AAA games like RDR.

mp3 is just too short and has annoying cutscenes as well.

ramcool789 54 pts

 buccomatic  Kain_Darothic then don't play it.Period.

Kain_Darothic 20 pts

buccomatic To each his own , there are some people who think RDR sucks.

buccomatic 355 pts

Kain_Darothic haha! yeah like nine people in the whole world.

pffft!

Checking back after 7 hours in and I'm halfway through the game on chapter 7.Keep in mind I'm playing on hard for my first play through and on a few occasions got stuck for abit but this game does not  feel short in any way shape or form.I official would say that it's in my opinion its worth its 60 price tag.Do yourself a favor though and put that badboy on hard your first play through.

"The (Single Player) campaign here is the Star of the show"! Wow when's the last time anyone's heard that! We/I'd like to here that alot more often! I'm sooooo fed up with alway's and forever hearing not all, but all too many gamers crying about some games not having MP! Oh and btw I'm Not anti MP it's just that that's alllllllllllllllll one ever hears about now a day's, more so as I'm quite sure everybody knows is for the most part because of (war games) everybody say it with me "COD" and or the like, and again no I'm Not anti COD either! Anyway sorry for going on but this is in my view a very good thing for gaming as a whole to be sure! Happy gaming all!!

after watching this review i read another one i think using them both sheds some light on how the game works or at lesst how the reviewers thought about it here a link for who ever wants it

How the hell did this game get 9? I've played through it twice and there's nothing special about its gameplay. And another tps game called Inversion only got 4. The review for Inversion mocked its gameplay mechanics, yet it exactly describes the gameplay mechanics for this game as well. This game is very mediocre, it's better as movie.

cjmilla527 12 pts

Buccomatic why are you still here?Oh yeah your playing your favorite game called TROLL..Nobody seems to care what you think man go back to WOW aka (hello kitty adventure islands wow light)and have a nice day

3 Hours in and I'm loving it.a solid break from mmo's and rpg's..Played 3 hours on hard and don't think iv put a dent in the game..I'm always pro content when it comes to 60 bucks of hard earned cash and haven't beaten the game so I can't comment on the length but what I can say is that this game is alot of fun hands down and I will be sad when it comes to a end. Can't say yet if I think its worth 60 yet because it;s not over but so far it feels worth it.That being said I wish developers gave us gamers more for are money content wise and follow suit from games like skyrim dragon dogma, castlevania lord of shadows and the like.Anyone who says its bad hasn't played it or they don't like fps games or there just a troll

buccomatic 355 pts

the game is a complete waste of time and money.

buccomatic are you a Max payne hater? seems like you are, as you have been doing here "social work" since this review was made.Hating this game and warning people about it eh?well idk which version u played but i played the pc one and it was awesome, i really liked the campaign and multiplayer too....already played the campaign like three times and will have another go at it....so if u don't like it, plz don't say anything bad about it,let others enjoy this game and just leave it as it is...

 buccomatic

To be fair, isn't *every* game esentially a "waste of time and money"...

it all depends on whether one is willing to spend, and in this case, I (and many others along with me) am.

Do you actually have any reasoned arguments to substantiate your claim?

KylaraDrenn 6 pts

I actually preordered the game after some convincing by my friends (plus there was a Steam deal that cemented my decision). Having finished the game recently, I'm glad that I bought the game and don't regret paying full price for it either.

I've seen some of the more asinine comments here, and I think that there are very few action games that manage to combine excellent storytelling with interesting/unique combat like Max Payne 3 manages to do. I've played numerous shooters, including BF3 and the various CoD games (including MW, MW2 & Black Ops), and for the most part, those games have extremely cliched plots that recycle elements you might see on a show like 24. Most of them lack interesting protagonists and stories that are actually creative.

Max Payne 3, on the other hand, actually has a coherent and compelling (as far as I was concerned) story about a man who's hit bottom and is battling his own demons while stuck in a place far, far away from home. Needless to say, I disagree with those who say the story didn't make sense and/or was boring. It took me twelve hours to finish one run on normal, and I thought it was the perfect length with everything that took place being in service of the story. Would I have liked more time with Max? Yeah, especially because James McCaffrey gave an amazing performance as Max. However, pointlessly stuffing the game with filler would have detracted from the story in this case.

It was definitely a cinematic experience, which may be good or bad depending on what you're looking for in a game. Personally, I thought the pacing was good overall (with some minor quibbles here & there). The game also has some of the most amazing graphics I've seen. I'm difficult to impress when it comes to graphics, but MP3 pretty much blew me away with its visuals. Nothing's wowed me since Batman: Arkham City, but I actually had a bit of a hallelujah moment right at the start of MP3 because of the crisp, detailed textures and how life-like everything was. The soundtrack and the sound in general were great too - love listening to the in-game music while playing, and I thought each piece fit perfectly.

One of my friends (a big Max Payne fan) was a bit dubious about the game because of concerns regarding its length and because Remedy wasn't the developer. I ended up buying the game for him as a graduation present - and he really enjoyed it too. If you're one of those people fixated on game length as a measure of a game's worth, well, I'm sure there's some crappy game out there that's long with a banal story/plot that might interest you.

I had Borderlands GotY, and while it was fun collecting guns at first, it rapidly became dull and repetitive. At a certain point, I just wanted to get it over with and wasn't really even enjoying it by the end. I would have traded a considerable amount of the time that I spent playing Borderlands for a better story with a good ending and just one character that I actually cared about/had some level of interest in. At least with MP3 I was invested in the protagonist and the story for the twelve hours that I spent on my initial run through the single-player campaign (and I'm still playing it too whenever I get the chance).

HeemaHamdy 34 pts

guys please don't bother me..the game is so Fuckin EPIC...play it on hard and you'll feel its taking too long..hard difficulty will take about 16-18 hours...its worth buying..and the multiplayer is Awesome..Thanks Rockstar For this EPIC

bearcomputerrep 5 pts

HeemaHamdy (Into the sunset) - I completely agree.

DaMonstah 8 pts

HeemaHamdy I beat it on hard in like 12 hours...

buccomatic 355 pts

no value in buying this average 12 hour game for $60.00.

might as well just flush your money down the toilet.

bearcomputerrep 5 pts

buccomatic I agree on some levels, but plenty of people are willing to spend the money... We can't stop that - People will pay $60.00 like it's water only because it's a featured title, but if you really think about it, the stronger the sales on this game the more money Rockstar will have to tweak their future releases (Grand Theft Auto).

staggermann 9 pts

I liked everything about this game but the random flickering/color changes in almost every cutscene. I admit i was awesome for the first hour or so, but it just seemed too much towards the end of the game. It seemed forced.

bearcomputerrep 5 pts

Did anyone see the trailor for Splinter Cell Blacklist?

buccomatic 355 pts

do yourself a favor and wait a couple months before buying this game - it's only 12 hours long.

retailers will be stuck with a bazillion copies of it on their hands (rockstar shipped like 3.5 million of them) and the only way they'll be able to sell them is to lower the price because they won't be able to compete with epic AAA titles like borderlands 2 etc...

bearcomputerrep 5 pts

buccomatic This I completely Agree with, because the price is a little much.

The only reason I bought it early is because I review games through my own web-site.

Even though I do say this game is great and my overall score for it is 8.9 Bear Points, I think people should wait till either steam or Gamestop have some kind of discount.

buccomatic 355 pts

bearcomputerrep what you might want to try is, instead of going to gamestop (they don't give good deals on new or used games), try ebay first, newegg.com second, glyde third, amazon fourth, and bestbuy fifth. i have found these retailers consistently give the best deals. i have found mixed results using google shopping, it sometimes shows the lowest price and sometimes it does not. but gamespot is something i avoid like the plague and steam is ok but DRM is still 100% BS.

you can usually get the game brand new from newegg.com for right around the same price or 5 dollars more than they're going for on ebay and somethime 5 to 10 dollars less than ebay for brand new games.

always check newegg and ebay and glyde first nad literaly save yourself thousands of dollars if you buy games new or used/like new.

buccomatic Wow, you are a really cheap dude huh?

Ask your parents for a raise in your allowance and quit trolling comments with your bitter whining.

Personally, I have a young son and work 50 hours a week so I cant invest 100 hours in a game, so Max Payne 3 is awesome. It tells a fantastic narrative and provides some amazing shooting without eating away at my real life.

buccomatic 355 pts

kaiser8061 lol @ "you're cheap and whiney because you don't let yourself get ripped off and spend  your money wisely instead."

whaaah!

mps 3 flat out sucks and is a big time fail. doesn't matter if it's 12 hours short or 50 hours longs, it's crap either way.

My final comment:

I believe this is the future of the Grand Theft Auto action cinematic sequences.

Just imagine - Grand Theft Auto Five intertwined with Max Payne in a open world sandbox

Carolyn, You are an awesome editor. I am one of your fans and I agree with your honesty.

You are my idol and I really wish they would allow you to review every game, but I know how the business is and you obviously can't. Thank you Carolyn!

bearcomputerrep 5 pts

My name is Daniel and I love Gamespot.com.

This is the best gaming web-site i've ever had the pleasure of discussing on.

I have 1000's of games dating back to the 80's and I am writing a book on games. I will be honest in every comment I leave about gaming and Max Payne is worth the money for the story alone.

GO GAMESTOP!

Carolyn,

I am a big fan and you are a great viewer don't let anyone else tell you otherwise - You are awesome. Every review you've created I have enjoyed - Keep us up to date. You honestly are a unreal editor and one of my idols.

I really have to say that this review is awesome and so is the game. I know that Max Payne has gotten a lot of "mixed reviews" in the past, but in my opinion I think that this is the greatest Max Payne I've ever played. I really enjoy the PC version. A lot of people complain about the straight forward game-play, but that is just Max Payne. He kills, kills and kills with a kick a@# attitude. His narrative actually if you think about it is closely intertwined with the gameplay since he has to survive. Max isn't the type of person to simply stalk enemy's and come from behind. His narrative shows him as a straight shooter type of guy with not much to lose.I think that the game has many different levels of emotions and feelings especially during specific parts when Max is about to die. The campaign is diverse and well worth every penny if you were to go out and buy it.

I really enjoy the PC version due to the decrease in loading times.

I also think the sound in the game is great. Every word is spoken with true grace and fluidity that it makes for a more intense story.

The multiplayer in my opinion is flawed, but when you're engrossed in a posse or gang it becomes fun and entertaining.

I am a every genre gaming fan (RPG, Action, Adventure, Sports) i own 1000's of games all the way from the late 80's and I will tell you that this game is worth every penny. I also am a independent reviewer of PC games and am publishing a book about "society and games." My name is Daniel and I really love this web-site Gamespot.com and will continue to review here. I feel other sites are not as "focused" as this one.

Ohh by the way E3 was great!!!!
