Some Of The Biggest Publishers In Social Network Gaming Are Backing Away From Google Plus

Popcap Games, which is a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, and Wooga, are shutting down its games, and walking away from Google Plus.

Both companies have been incredibly successful with Facebook gaming, but Google Plus simply isn't providing enough users for the companies to continue to allocate resources toward the maintenance of its games. Electronic Arts and Popcap is shutting down its Google PLus version of Bejeweled Blitz tomorrow, and Wooga shut down its games Monster World recently. Wooga issued a statement saying it has "decided to remove certain games from Google+ because we have a much larger following on Facebook and they are active users."

It may not entirely be the fault of Google Plus however. If previous reports are any indication, social gaming in general is rapidly losing popularity.

  • People use Google+? I thought it was popular for a week but then no talked about it.
  • It took so long for this day, and now that it's here, I forgot to stock up on pudding cups!
  • Google+ may not have a lot of users but their app is a billion times better than Facebooks app. Not to mention it looks unbelievably awesome and it functions with ease(no hesitations).
  • One does not simply create a social network if facebook already exists... Even if you're google...!
  • (plane crashing noise)
  • Google+ fans are usually aghast of people regarding the site as a ghost town. But they turned more into some kind if LinkedIn clone, but even less successful than the professional network. Seriously, G+ feels weird compared to FB (bur for the record, I have none).
  • ppl actually use google plus? i thought its just there to exist n never be used
  • Maybe people are finally starting to wise up about these "freemium" games and how big of a scam most of them are.  One can only hope.

  • Google+ app is WAY better than facebook app. Ten times better
  • I have nothing to say about Google+ as I don't even have a facebook account. But I will say that I am not surprised by this: "If previous reports are any indication, social gaming in general is rapidly losing popularity." Oh boy. All those developers who jumped ship to get some quick and dirty mobile/social money are going to be coming back to consoles having being out of the loop for a few years. Good luck fellas. Let me know how your experience programming Farmville Cats and Dogs serves you getting a job at a AAA publisher.
  • Man I seriously created a google plus like once then. Just ain't touched it again, for now it kinda useless, might of been better to release another time or redesign it to be something else

  • what is this???apps???google plus???facebook???huh???...who cares...moving on.

  • Good Riddance. Now maybe facebook walls everywhere will be safe from the proverbial message of: so and so wants to trade pigs with you on their farm!
  • G+ is increasingly becoming more important for businesses and bloggers rather than being a place where friends and family connect.

    Facebook already dominates that market.

So it's no surprise that gaming companies are packing up shop. The users just aren't there, although I do play some of the games from time to time. But what good is a social game if you your friends aren't there.

G+ isn't a total bust though. I predict that it will get increasingly popular for businesses as seo and inbound marketing skyrockets (which it has been).

  • Smart move. Now let the hardcore games take over the market!!
  • Good thing I don't play those games...

  • it looks like facebook has beat google plus!
  • Fine with me. I've never liked any of the games on social networking sites.

  • Smart thinking on there parts

  • "... social gaming in general is rapidly losing popularity"

    We live in hope. :P
