It's tough to be a journalist. Between budget cuts, staff reductions, and the demand to be a "one man band" e.g. write, shoot, tweet, blog, etc. all in real-time -- expectations and pressures have never been greater. But during a year in which legends in the international press corps have lost their lives in the line of duty, from Anthony Shadid to Marie Colvin, it's time to start paying attention to what can be done to both reduce the dangers of reporting and increase, if not simply safeguard, basic freedoms.

The fallout from the Wi-Fi snooping that occurred in Google's Street View program continues, with Congress now threatening to get into the act. Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts is citing reports that cast doubt on Google's claims that its collection from the networks of "payload data" -- which included emails, passwords and search histories -- was "a mistake" in his calls for a congressional investigation.

A man named Robert Herskowitz has filed a federal class action suit against Apple, alleging that the company "double-bills" for purchases made on iTunes with "troubling regularity" and that the company's "illegal" policies also apply to other digital stores like the App Store, the iBookstore and the Mac App Store. Herskowitz seeks an injunction and punitive damages of more than $5 million for a national class suit, alleging breach of contract, breach of faith, unjust enrichment, unfair competition and business-law violations.
