PSN Down, Delaying PS3 Game Reviews

Justin Calvert
By Justin Calvert, Executive Editor

Reviews of PS3 games with online features won't be posted until the PSN is back online and we're able to test those features.

As you're no doubt aware, Sony's PlayStation Network has been down for almost three weeks as of this writing. As a result, we've been unable to download a number of PSN games that we were planning to review, including Arcana Heart 3, Outland, and Puzzle Agent, to name but a few. Up until now, this has pretty much been the extent of the PSN outage's impact on our reviews team, but with the impending releases of games like Brink, DiRT 3, F.3.A.R., and Virtua Tennis 4, which all boast online features, that's going to change.

We only post reviews for versions of games that we've actually tested. That's why, occasionally, we're unable to post reviews for all versions of a multiplatform game on the same day. When the Xbox 360 version of Portal 2 was the only one we had access to prior to the multiplatform game's release, the Xbox 360 version was the only one we had a review for on day one, for example. If you wish to base your purchasing decision for one version of a game on a review of another, that's up to you. (It's true that reviews for the same game on different platforms often end up being very similar.) But we're not going to make that decision for you by posting reviews and scores for products that we haven't tested. With that and the continuing PSN outage in mind, we feel we have no choice but to postpone our reviews of PS3 games with online features until we've had an opportunity to test those online features. To do otherwise would be a disservice both to you and to the companies whose games we'd be making assumptions about.

Exactly when PSN will be back online is anybody's guess; today, we're told it will be restored by May 31, but on April 27 we were told it would be "within a week from yesterday," which was about a week ago at this point. When normal service is resumed, catching up on the PS3 reviews that we've been unable to get to will be a priority. In the meantime, we'll continue to play any PS3 games that we're sent alongside other versions, post screenshots and gameplay movies from them, and use this blog to alert you anytime we feel like they're significantly different in some way to the versions that we've been able to review.

@P_R_E_Y Dear god learn to take a joke.

P_R_E_Y 5 pts

@liam82517 This is going nowhere, I have never trolled on a forum to date and don't plan to now, but word of advice, come up with more original insults, ones that actually work is a good idea. And if Sony wants to keep things all nice and dandy they should learn something from this, never said they entirely will, hence the word "hope" either way isn't my problem; I hardly use PSN or the PS period

liam82517 105 pts

@P_R_E_Y I cant believe you just said that. You are obviously just a dumb troll living in your parents basement rubbing one out to pictures if estelle getty. Only someone like that could very think sony could learn a lesson lol.

P_R_E_Y 5 pts

@liam82517 Nah I got the joke, but Chuck Norris Jokes to me have lost all humour, I also never meant it in a serious way, kinda a slag off to PSN for not actually having a firewall in place but if you think I canne handle a joke then fair enough, you obviously don't know me too well... Also nice use of immediate gayness/@ss play thrown in there ,typical 12 year old thing to do... if anything atleast i can get a stick in there and not have my head in the way... you might want to wash that when you decide to pull it out... PSN is pretty much back up now anyway so hopefully Sony have learned their lesson.

@slippship Online and offline may be different however they are sold in the same package so should be reviewed together. Your opinion is different yes but don't complain bout it, you go over to OPMag and ill stay here at gamespot/ ign/ everywhere else that does full game reviews

slippship 5 pts

@Knightarce I normally would let that lie, you are allowed an opinion but ending in a flame is 10 yr old behavior. My personal opinion on gaming obviously differs to yours but the single player in COD is a completely different to online yes? Battlefield online is completely different too. Online has no bearing on games to me, and many others. Capture the flag does get boring after 3 seconds after all.

Knightarce 5 pts

@slippship Fair enough about what you said, but I buy games because of the whole package, why review only a part of the game? I certainly didn't buy Battlefield BC2 for its single player but i did for Red Dead Redemption, games are different yes, however online is a key element of most modern games and therefore should be reviewed in conjuction with the offline elements. I have the right to tell you to be quiet because you were chatting bs

@JusticeCovert thanks for the reply

JusticeCovert 6 pts

@Arther-la-Blunt The First Templar has been on our radar for a while, but we've yet to receive a review copy. Looks like we'll be buying the game tomorrow like everyone else.

CavemanLawyer 5 pts

@sexytyrant Yeah wasnt it Waninkokos firmware that bricked everyones consoles?

Arther-la-Blunt 32 pts

Well, where's the review for the First Templar?

taino1128 5 pts

In addition to delaying game reviews, this has to also be delaying development for some games that include multiplayer. (Uncharted 3 & Resistance 3)

PSN has to work. It's like losing gasoline and mechanical transportation is impaired forever, only in this situation, it's information and electronic connectivity that's blocked. Imagine that. That's what it feels like to lose a service. Especially from a well-respected company. I hope it all get's fixed.

sexytyrant69 5 pts

HAHHAHA!!! I find it pathetic people are complaining about no on line play from the PSN. I'm from the old school of gaming in which i feel comfortable playing either the AI or me and four of my friends, playing at my house.People are a bunch of wussies on here. Look at it this way, it could have been worse. Hackers could have put a worm like virus in the PSN that can instantly destroy the PS3 By burning the motherboard. ("Oh i forgot they already did that it's called a firmware update",that causes a little something called the YLOD")

slippship 5 pts

@Knightarce You don't justify a reply really, but if a game comes in retail version can you not review it? Does gamespot not review DLC seperate? Are you just dissing because you feel the need. I'm right in what I say, okay 83% statistics are made up on the spot, but you can't argue about reviewing retail first then multiplayer and DLC later on if need be. It's only fair to the consumer at the end of the day. But I shall not keep quiet, who are you? My pensioner dad??

unfreak-believ 5 pts

That doesn't make any sense. The issue isn't on the developers' part, it's on Sony's. The product works just fine, so it would be extremely stupid to give MP-oriented games terrible scores due to Sony's mishap.

terrascythe 14 pts

Sounds like a BS line to maintain advertising revenue. Why can't disc games be reviewed as is like every other consumer report does? If the product doesn't work as advertised then it goes into the report and is reflected in the rating. Read carefully, it's not that they cannot test disc games, it's that they refuse to test them. Suddenly, GS only does reviews when it's convenient for Sony? In my opinion, that's biased and a disservice to everyone who already purchased the product.

coylenintendo 5 pts

@Azorean269 trust me, if all video game players could get along then so would I. but we both know that'll never happen. I always tried for that to happen but why do you think we have system wars in the forums section? I don't say anything too often but I do once in a while. like that old saying, if you can't beat them then join them.

Azorean269 5 pts

@coylenintendo See I'm similar to you in that respect that I play take a break and come on to GameStop. The difference between the two of us is that I don't spend my free logging on to XBOX 360 posts to badmouth a council I don't own. Why don't you do us a favor and you and the people like you, both on the 360 and PS3, stop trying to start council wars nonsense.

coylenintendo 5 pts

@Azorean269 or maybe did you ever consider the fact that I can't stand playing video games more than a couple times a week? I go on Gamespot maybe once or twice a week two. so what if I comment on a couple news stories?

Azorean269 5 pts

@coylenintendo Yea too bad you XBox 360 fanboys hate playing on your system so much that you prefer to post on PS3 posts instead of playing on your system.

coylenintendo 5 pts

I love how Playstation fanboys were bragging about what amazing games they would have this year. yeah I'll still admit that Microsoft has less games this year, for like the first time in a few years. but at least we'll be able to play the online parts of whatever games come out. and I still feel somewhat bad for the PS3 Black Ops players that either went to school or work and then came home and spent every night playing it all night.

liam82517 105 pts

@P_R_E_Y If only you could take a joke as well as you take that stick up your backside.

Knightarce 5 pts

@slippship "99% of games actual 'game' is offline anyway, yes even COD had a single player part" Just keep quiet with your made up statistic, you could possibly quantify what you said but it would be very warped. Certainly many games are 100% single player but most games are not and even single player games have dlc, leaderboards, chatting to other online friends etc

JusticeCovert 6 pts

@Rocker6 That's simply not true. If reviews for multiple versions of the same game are almost identical it's only because...you guessed it...the games are almost identical. We never post reviews for versions of games that we haven't tested, and if we find that any version is different enough to warrant a different review, we write one.

benleslie5 41 pts

Wasn't Beyond Good and Evil HD was going to be released this month for PSN?

darkangel494 5 pts

@DaNubianPryns Not really the osama is skeptical within itself yet these hackers would definitely make sure they would cover their tracks. They are the elite on the internet and are very difficult to catch. I highly doubt these guys are going to get caught. They aren't exactly top 1 on the most wanted.

Rocker6 221 pts

Half the time Gamespot doesnt even review multiplatform games on PS3,they review them on Xbox360 and just paste the review to PC and PS3.

slippship 5 pts

Good job I rely on OPMag for reviews; they always review multiplayer separately anyway. Unless it's MAG/Warhawk/DC online etc. 99% of games actual 'game' is offline anyway, yes even COD had a single player part.

P_R_E_Y 5 pts

@DaNubianPryns And when they do find them, two shots to the face.... @liam82517 Chuck Norris's firewall is obviously Sh!t then...

Toxicdude12 5 pts

It believes that Bloomberg is quoting Kaz Hirai from an earlier press conference when it mentions a full return to service. While Yoshida himself did not clarify this with Bloomberg, it seems that the current plan is to indeed have everything -- including the PlayStation Store -- up by the end of the month.

internationaal 5 pts

I disagree. The PSN being down is a good option to buy a game with a good SP part. I mean, if you'd wait with AC becuase it has an online option that would be stupid! Also, Sony told that the whole PSN would be FULLY operational May 31, but that means they'll start bringing bits online before that!

liam82517 105 pts

@c_rakk Chuck Norris doesnt connect to PSN, PSN connects to Chuck Norris! :D

alkaline_DnB 5 pts

We'll locate the hackers, it'll just take us 10 years

DaNubianPryns 5 pts

Hopefully, those responsible for the cyber attacks will be caught and brought to justice. This is ridiculous. So many innocent bystanders being punished for nothing. If they can locate Osama, they should have no problem locating some hackers.

MidwestGuy 5 pts

well its llike this i cannot even play crysis 2 because it trys to download a update and it can't comes up with a error code

THORINATOR 5 pts

New update on the ps blog.....same rubbish though, no exact date, at least a few more days. Seriously whoever is in charge of their PR department should be sacked. Way way way beyond a joke. If I didn't already have a 360 I'd seriously be considering joining the 'I'm selling my PS3 for a 360' brigade. Sony get ur act together, most people have gone way beyond having sympathy...its now turned to anger. Yeah, I know hackers caused this whole situation, but the complete lack of communication from Sony & giving customers false hope with timeframes that weren't met is just making Sony appear to be completely incompetent. This disaster gets worse with each passing day. I've got a lot of Sony products but after this shambles I'll be thinking twice about ever buying a Sony product again. Sony ur a disgrace!!!!

c_rakk 5 pts

Chuck Norris can connect on PSN :D

drummerdickens 5 pts

Fallout 3 was a great example of the huge differences between Xbox and PS3 versions. The main difference being the Xbox versions worked properly...

ZoTrAcK 10 pts

By the way, patch downloading is working...

kratospete 7 pts

at least the update patches can still be downloaded without loggin in cause i played bayonetta last week and i downloaded the patch before starting playing it
