Field Day 2012

On 2nd June, Hackney’s Victoria Park lends its green space to Field Day, hosting cutting-edge artists from the worlds of electronica and indie (and a few thousand so-hip-it-hurts punters). As usual, there’s an embarrassment of riches on the bill this year, ranging from big-hitters Franz Ferdinand to bright new hopes Friends, not to mention acclaimed alt-hip hop outfit Death Grips and recently-reformed indie legends Mazzy Star. Check out our pick of the bill below.

Top three must-sees

Mazzy Star

Mazzy Star Californian dream-pop duo Mazzy Star are back! Yes, having spent the past 16 years providing spine-tingling vocals for artists like Air and Massive Attack – and performing with My Bloody Valentine’s Colm Ó Cíosóig in The Warm InterventionsHope Sandoval’s finally writing with David Roback again. Head down to the Village Mentality Stage to hear classics like ‘Fade Into You’ and ‘Into Dust’, plus material from their long-awaited fourth studio album.

Grimes

GrimesIf we had a few bob to spare, we’d put it on Grimes’ latest long-player Visions playing a starring role in the Best of 2012 round-ups. With glowing reviews and a rapidly multiplying fan base, her set at Field Day ought to prove one of the most over-subscribed of the day too. If you want to see the Canadian one-woman band perform her experimental electro-pop in the flesh, we’d suggest you get to the Village Mentality Stage early doors.

SBTRKT

SBTRKTFamed for his tribal mask and magpie-like approach to making music, Aaron Jerome of SBTRKT was responsible for one of the most acclaimed dance debuts of 2011. He’ll be bringing his unique mix of two-step, dubstep, UK funky and Chicago house to the Bugged Out! Tent, hopefully with a little help from Sampha and fellow Field Day-performer Jessie Ware.
