BlackBerry PlayBook 2.1.0 Beta for developers released with improved Android app behavior

PlayBook 2.0

As expected, RIM has released the latest PlayBook beta out for developers, version 2.1.0. The new enhancements are mainly in the Android runtime: Android apps will each now run in a separate window instead of a single one and RIM has opened up access to the camera as well as to in-app payments via the BlackBerry Payment SDK. Other features include portrait support for email, contacts, and...

According to The Globe and Mail, RIM is getting ready to axe at least 2,000 employees in "the next couple of weeks." The move would see the struggling company's workforce drop to about 14,500, and it comes after it has seen multiple high-level executives leave — including former co-CEO Jim Balsille. RIM also made a similar move in the summer of last year, when it laid off 2,000 employees alongside a shuffle of its executives. The Globe and Mail cites "several people close to the company" saying that the worldwide layoffs could come as soon as June 1st and will hit a broad spectrum of the company, including "senior positions in RIM's legal division to human resources, finance, sales and marketing." The news today comes after a poor Q4 earnings report in March that saw a 21 percent drop in smartphone shipments and news earlier this...

Sony hand-cranked USB charger replenishes energy without an outlet

Photo

We've seen a few hand-cranked chargers out there, most notably as an accessory for the OLPC XO-1, but Sony's new CL-A2LAS is one of the more practical implementations. The new USB charger includes a 4,000mAh battery that requires three minutes of cranking to supply a minute of talk time or five minutes of manual labor for a minute of web browsing. The battery cell can also be charged up by plugging the unit into a wall outlet. Once powered up,...

Blackberry 10 app tray revealed (updated)

As8hr1pciailovt_large_medium

RIM held back many of the details around BlackBerry 10 during BlackBerry World earlier this month — one of the most important of which was a very basic one: how do you launch apps? At a UK press event earlier today, RIM's Vivek Bhardwaj finally dropped that small detail. As we saw in our closer look at BlackBerry 10, the default homescreen is a set of "tiles" that represent a widget-like view of your recently used apps while you can swipe to...
