DCS: Combined Arms Announced, Bring On The Ground War
- 1 Comment
Eagle Dynamics / The Fighter Collection surprised at least a few of the sim fans out there when they suddenly introduced cross platform compatibility among their popular sim products - DCS: A-10C Warthog, DCS: Black Shark 2, and DCS: P-51D Mustang. Now things are about to get even more crazy, with the announcement of DCS: Combined Arms. It's quite a bit different when compared to their flight sims, so I'll let our Eagle Dynamics buddy Matt Wagner break things down for you:

DCS: Combined Arms gives the user control of ground forces during the battle. Use the strategic map to move ground forces, set artillery fire missions, and control the ground battle. Assume the role of a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) and designate targets for close air support aircraft, or directly control an armor vehicles or air defense weapons and engage enemy forces.

Play DCS: Combined Arms as a real time strategy game, a first person armor warfare simulation, or direct the ground battle from the cockpit of a DCS aircraft like the A-10C Warthog, Ka-50 Black Shark, or P-51D Mustang.

DCS: Combined Arms supports both single player and multiplayer gameplay. When in multiplayer, different players can take on different roles such as artillery commanders, tank commanders, pilots, JTACS, etc. DCS: Combined Arms allows you full control of the battle. All roles can be changed dynamically during the battle.

Features of the DCS: Combined Arms:

  • Move ground forces and direct their fire during a missions.
  • Be the Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) and direct close air support.
  • Jump into the seat of many armor and air defense units to engage enemy air and ground forces.
  • Play in both single player and multiplayer games.
  • Both small and large scale battle missions included.
  • Part of DCS World
Sounds pretty epic to me! If you're into this stuff like I am, then you'll definitely want to check out the trailer below. If it sells you, then head over to the official DCS site a little later this month to pre-order Combined Arms for $29.99. Doing so will get you early access to pre-release betas, much like previous DCS releases.

Bohemia Interactive Gives A Peek At ArmA 3 At E3
- 0 Comments
It appears that the guys at Bohemia Interactive are in a bit of a teasing mood. You see, they've made a trailer to go over what they'll be showing the attendees of E3 when it comes to ArmA 3, but they chose to leave out some really juicy bits. It's still worth watching though, even if it doesn't have the cluster bombs, or the vehicle mounted grenade launcher attack. Keep your fingers crossed, maybe after E3 ends they'll show off the whole demo.

Max Payne 3 Now Available On PC
Ladies and gentlemen, the time has finally come.. you can now pick up Max Payne 3 for the PC! On the king of all platforms (epic rage bait) Max gets some serious special treatment with upgraded visuals including phong tessellation and FXAA support, along with optimization for multi-display gaming. According to NVIDIA a single GTX 670 can dish out very playable framerates at a 5760x1080 resolution and maxed out settings. The only semi-shocker for some might be the install size, as Max Payne 3 is going to need close to 35GB of hard drive space.

Update: Here are a bunch of 5760x1080 images that were snapped randomly in multiplayer. NVIDIA was spot on, Max Payne 3 is definitely optimized for triple screen play.

Doom 3 Will Rise Again Through New BFG Edition
- 7 Comments
Bethesda sends word that Doom 3 will be getting a big re-release this year via a BFG Edition of the game on the PC, 360, and PS3. The console versions have been re-mastered according to the press release, featuring an entirely new single-player storm called "The Lost Mission", 3D TV and head-mounted display support, 5.1 surround sound, achievements, trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and even a checkpoint save system. The main character also now has a suit mounted flashlight, doing away with the strange handheld flashlight mechanics of the original release.

Here's a little bit of goodness from id Software's John Carmack on the announcement:

“DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,” said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. “Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”

The Creators Of Space Quest Beam Down A Kickstarter Campaign
- 2 Comments
Remember the two guys from Andromeda? Yep, the pig nosed guys that made an appearance on just about every classic Sierra release of the hilarious Space Quest adventure series. Well, they're back, and they want to make a new space adventure game. All they need to do that is some funding, through Kickstarter of course! Unfortunately they don't actually have the rights to the Space Quest IP, but they're still quite confident in their abilities to get something entirely new going in the same kind of style. The new game is currently being called "SpaceVenture"

You can check out their pitch video below, and if you head over to their Kickstarter campaign page you can see that they've got a ton of backer rewards available. It's also worth noting that they've got some big voice talent lined up already. As of this post the duo have raised a little over half of what they need, with ten days to spare.

Does Square's Latest Hitman: Absolution Trailer Offend You?
Square-Enix recently released the "Attack of the Saints" trailer for the upcoming stealth-action shooter Hitman Absolution, and it caused some serious drama all up on the internets. For the majority it came down to either the inappropriately dressed (and armed) nuns, or outright violence against the women by Agent 47 himself. Others just brushed it off. What's your take?

Update: There's some actual mission gameplay footage of Hitman: Absolution up now on Youtube, thanks to VG24/7.

A Quick Note From Ohm
As promised, Chris (Billy Wilson's brother) was given the last "Blah..." update on the front page, which marks the end of news updates with the existing staff here. It's always a pleasure to interact with Billy's fam, they're a great bunch, and giving them a chance to give you all an update was the least I could do. Billy literally was Voodoo Extreme, without him this site wouldn't have existed let alone survived all the way into 2012.

As mentioned last week, going forward if Socket and I remain at VE in any capacity the extent of coverage will be limited to occasional in-house content. We need some feedback from you guys though, so if you have a moment please take a few to fill out this quick survey.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words and support over the many months and weeks leading up to this point. In the very near future I hope to see you around on my Youtube channel (SMITE videos w/commentary coming soon), and on Twitter. Also, a big thanks goes out to all of the people over the years that have contributed to Voodoo Extreme. Hit up the staff page to see a (mostly) full list.

That's all folks, well, after a little bit of news just to wrap this all up the right way.

Blah...

This is quite possibly the hardest thing that I've ever been asked to do. Remembering back more than 7 years ago to what originally ripped my heart out seems to be bringing back a flood of memories that have long since been repressed. I feared writing this, and pushed it back day after day, fearing of what might be remembered. At the same time, I cherish this opportunity to bring to light the life of Billy "Wicked" Wilson, from the eyes of his family.

My name is Christopher, I am the youngest of Billy's brothers, and my mother Peggy asked me to speak on behalf of our family to his readers and followers. Admittedly, we knew that Billy had a large following, but we didn't know it was to the scale that we learned about after he passed. The outreach of all of you has had an effect immeasurable by any standards. I cannot express to you exactly how it feels to have people to this day talk about Billy in my presence, not even knowing that I am his brother. I don't think he even realized his fame. He probably still wouldn't believe me if I had told him today.

Possibly his greatest achievement, is his son, Dax. Many of you knew about Dax, because frankly, that's all he cared about in his final years. He is now 13, and seemingly 8'4" (not really, but seriously, give him a few years.) He is no longer the young toddler Billy loved and cherished, he has grown into quite literally the spitting image of his old man. He types faster than all of you, combined, has a catalog of technical knowledge that would scare most adults, and more than anything, has the same sense of humor and wit that made Billy famous to begin with. He will never know how much he is like his father. I can't thank Billy enough for leaving us with a little piece of him. Aimee has done an excellent job respecting and preserving the legacy of Billy. She has since remarried to a man who was handpicked by Billy from above. This man, Dan has done a wonderful job of picking up where Billy left off. I can't express my gratitude for him and Aimee raising Dax in the way he deserved.

Billy has left an impact on his family that cannot be perceived. Every day we think about him, his words, his actions, and what he left to this world. Sean and I have both adorned ourselves with tattoos of the Harry McBlink image. I think we both have enjoy when people ask "What is that voodoo head guy?" and we're able to jar someone's ear off for 45 minutes while we brag about our oldest brother, and what he did, and what that meant to us. When my mother talks about him, she speaks as if she saw him yesterday, you see a sparkle in her eye, remembering her baby for what he did to this world. It's obvious we're all better off for knowing Billy for all those years. Every one of us, Thom, Sean, Peggy, Jim, even Dax, catches ourselves saying one-liners made famous by Billy. It's apparent the influence lives on.

More than anything, he lives on in you. His readers knew a side of him that none of us ever saw. Consider yourself lucky for knowing him in his element. He not only had a talent for what he did, he was made for it. I only read a few of his blahs, being that I was maybe 10-12 at the time, but I remember them fondly. Blessed are those that read his columns daily, because you weren't just getting your honey roasted gaming news, you were getting a dose of wisdom, from Billy, whether either of you knew it or not. Speaking on behalf of his family, we can't thank you, his readers and colleagues, enough for allowing him to live the dream, even for only a few short years. I can't think of anyone else who deserved it more.

Voodooextreme lives on in all of you.

Update: Peggy sent along a short clip of Dax jamming on a drumset.

Red Orchestra 2 GOTY Edition Now Available
- 7 Comments
Our friends at Tripwire Interactive send word that the Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad - GOTY Edition is now available for purchase by newcomers, or via a free download for existing customers. For those that like to try before they buy Tripwire is kicking off a free weekend from now until Sunday 5/27 in which the full game can be played by anyone on Steam. There's also a 75% off sale on Steam for the Red Orchestra 2 GOTY edition until Monday the 28th.

We've got some of the specifics on the content that makes up the GOTY pack, which includes two new gameplay modes, a new map, and significant engine enhancements / optimizations.

  • "Action" mode - Featuring a crosshair, easier aiming and toned down recoil, reduced damage and open access to a wide range of weaponry Action mode is the perfect first step for players into the world of Red Orchestra.
  • "Classic" mode blends the gameplay innovations of the new game with the tactical and edgy gameplay of the original giving the fans of the first game exactly what they want.
  • Mamayev Kurgan - complete new map, featuring both close-quarters battles in trenches and bunkers, as well as longer ranged combat across the famous hill in Stalingrad
  • Refined and improved gameplay across the board, vehicle improvements, and way better performance and polish. We listened to the community and based on their feedback refined and tweaked almost every major feature in the game!
Unfortunately we weren't able to get a proper review up of Red Orchestra 2 last year, but I can tell you personally that it's a game that PC FPS fan needs to try. I spent more time with Red Orchestra 2 than I did with Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 last year, if that means anything to you.

Meet "The Cave", The Double Fine Adventure That Didn't Need Kickstarting
- 2 Comments
Seriously folks, don't confuse "The Cave" with Double Fine's Adventure. This side scrolling adventure-ish type game already has publisher funding and support thanks to Sega. The Cave is scheduled for an early 2013 release, according to the debut trailer below. Double Fine's Adventure on the other hand should be out earlier than that, if things work out during the development process that is.

Metro: Last Light Gets Live Action Treatment - Enter The Metro

About a week ago I received an postcard in the mail hinting at the release of something special on May 24th, 2012. It turns out the surprise was something tied to the upcoming FPS Metro: Last Light, and it's a live action short film called "Enter The Metro". Check it out:

Total Biscuit Gets Exclusive First Peek At Planetside 2
- 5 Comments
Any Planetside fans in the house? If so, you'll want to check out Total Biscuit's first look at Planetside 2. He was only allowed to play around in a very limited sandbox for the most part, but the gameplay footage is very raw, and not polished up for mass consumption in any way. Considering it's going to be a free-to-play game, I was pretty impressed with what I saw. The only question is- should I stick with the New Conglomerate when it finally comes out?

Max Payne Busts A Cap In PCs Everywhere June 1st
- 1 Comment
Rockstar sends word that Max Payne 3 will finally be released for PCs on June 1st, 2012. Believe it or not, MP3 has already moved 3 million copies of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, and reviews have been pretty good overall with an 87% average thus far. Rockstar hasn't disclosed why the PC version wasn't released the same day as the console versions, but it very well could be that they simply didn't want to go head to head with Diablo 3.

If you're on the fence, why not check out IGN's video review?

ArmA 3 Dev Shows Off Latest Advances In Lighting
- 4 Comments
Bohemia Interactive is hard at work on ArmA 3, and seem to be pretty determined to make it one of the best looking open-world shooters on PC. To help with that they've really polished up the lighting system, to the point of generating near photo-realistic effects. Check out the trailer below to see for yourself.

Blah... They Look Like Big, Good, Strong Hands, Don't They?
Like many of you, Voodoo Extreme has been a part of my life in some way since the late 90s. In those days there weren't a ton of resources when it came to emerging 3D graphics cards, like those using the original 3DFX Voodoo chipset. As an early adopter of a 3DFX card I quickly learned that there wasn't a better place on the planet than Voodoo Extreme for the latest news on the 3DFX chipsets, and the variety of games out there supporting them. Of course as time went on we all saw Voodoo Extreme evolve as both games and technology changed, but one thing that always stayed the same was the passion and dedication of not just the staff, but also the community. A community that I've always felt closer to than any other.

I've mentioned this before, but Voodoo Extreme founder Billy "Wicked" Wilson was someone I considered a good friend, and losing him so suddenly was difficult. In some ways being a part of the Voodoo Extreme team again made it feel like he was still around, however weird that sounds. It's just that this site was always an extension of him, even after he left. It's because of that that I always wanted to see Voodoo Extreme live on, even in the Kotaku era.

Unfortunately, like so much else in life, things change. As many of you know, we were forced to deal with some big changes earlier this year. Since then I have tried to work something out that would keep the front page and community alive (or at least get this community a new home), but nothing has come through. As a result, Phil and I will be ceasing front page news updates next week. After that, if either of us are around in any capacity at all, the extent of any future updates will be related to in-house content only.

Beyond that it's unclear what's on the horizon for the Voodoo Extreme we've enjoyed for well over a decade. If this is yet another bump in the road, then I'll be the first to see you on the other side. If the end is in sight, then just know that you've all meant the world to the staff here, past and present. Thank you for being with us, through both the good times, and the bad times.

I have been in touch with the Wilson family, and am happy to let you guys know that the very last "Blah..." post published on my watch will be written by Billy's younger brother Christopher. This update will go live next week, so keep an eye out for that. With that said, if you'd ever like to get in touch with me direct for any reason I'll be leaving some contact information below. Otherwise it's been a pleasure providing you guys with news and content here, and I hope we cross paths again down the road.
