LSU Department of Theatre to Present “Dante” March 27-April 6 in Movement Studio

03/09/2012 04:11 PM

BATON ROUGE – Before it takes its production on the road to Scotland this summer, LSU’s Department of Theatre will present productions of the physical theatre piece, “Dante,” March 27 - April 6 in the Movement Studio, Room 166, of the Music & Dramatic Arts Building on Dalrymple Drive.

“Dante” is a contemporary adaption of Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno,” the first part of the 14th-century epic poem, “The Divine Comedy.” Dante travels through the nine circles of hell in his quest for his love, Beatrice, with unexpected results. The show fuses elements of theatre, dance, film, aerial arts and original musical composition.

Erickson collaborated with LSU Theatre Master of Fine Arts alumnus Alex Galick to write the adaption for the physical theatre production.

“This show gives my students the opportunity to showcase their range of talents in performance and design in a unique collective collaboration,” Erickson said. “They probe contemporary issues in a timeless epic.”

There will be two performances of “Dante” nightly, March 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., with matinee and evening performances on March 31 and April 1 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Students will take “Dante” to Scotland this summer, through LSU Academic Programs Abroad, to perform at the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe. There, they will perform as theatre professionals while simultaneously being exposed to productions from all over the world, earning six college credits in the process.

Tickets to the LSU performances are $10 each, and can only be purchased at the door the night of each showing. Please note that seating in the Movement Studio is limited to 50 people for each performance.

This production is supported by the LSU Performing Arts Fee. All dates and times are subject to change.
