Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest coming to PS3 and 360?

Square Enix is considering releasing the next installments in its popular RPG series on both Sony's and Microsoft's next-gen consoles.

TOKYO--In an interview with Reuters, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada disclosed that his company is considering releasing new installments of its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest role-playing series on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. "We will decide by E3 in May [2006] as to whether to release them on both the PS3 and Xbox, or just one platform," Wada told Reuters.

For the most part, both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest have been exclusive to a single platform. Both series made their debut on Nintendo's NES in the 1980s, and they continued to be hits on the SNES. However, Square defected to Sony Computer Entertainment's camp in the late 1990s, and the primary Final Fantasy series became exclusive to the PlayStation and later the PlayStation 2. Enix also shifted its Dragon Quest series to the PlayStation in 2001 before merging with Square in 2003. The series then shifted to the PS2 with the 2004 remake of Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VIII, which just shipped in North America.

That said, there have been exceptions to the two RPG series' platform exclusivity. The massively multiplayer RPG Final Fantasy XI is currently available for both the PC and PlayStation 2 and will be released on the Xbox 360 next year. The spin-off Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles was released for the GameCube in 2004, and plans for a Revolution version have been announced. Reissues of older FF games have been released for the Game Boy Advance, including the forthcoming Final Fantasy IV Advance. Slime MoriMori: Dragon Quest 2 is coming soon to the DS in Japan. There have also been mobile versions of both series, as well as Final Fantasy releases on the now-dead Wonderswan Color platform.

I agree 110% with jeffreykretzler and alfaresalasmar. I love Playstation, and would be rather upset if Square sold out to XBox as well. Though the games are great and I would love for other people to be able to play them, since we have to buy XBox to play GOW and Halo, they should get PS to play Square's games. Exclusive games make the consol, and even though PS3 is a little more expensive, the blueray and hd features are already built in. Though PS3 doesn't have the rumble featured controllers yet, the PSone and PS2 did; but I'm sure Sony will release them soon. (The "rumble" causes the controllers to go bad much quicker than normal).

PS3 does have internet capabilities like Microsoft's XBox 360, just not all the accessories. Give them a year or so. GET THIS STRAIGHT:
I am not "trashing" XBOX, in fact, I love Gears and prefer Guitar Hero II on XBox 360. However, I prefer PS3 for it's exclusiveness and for its games. TO ME Playstation is more prestigious. I think the reason some begrudge XBox is because it is MICROSOFT (aka Bill Gates having control). People tend to think of Sony (note sony makes the consol - NOT the games) as a people pleaser instead of trying to just make money. I don't think there is anything wrong with juliaryder wanting Final Fantasy to stay exclusive to PS. Everyone has a favorite game or series, and therefore everyone has a right to want that game to retain its exclusiveness. Square (a company that makes games currently for Sony) has a multitude of amazing games, so I can't blame "XBox only" gamers for wanting them to share.

If final fantasy 13 comes to the xbox 360.. then HALO AND GEARS OF WAR should come to the PS3.. we buy the playstation to play these games, if we make it multi platform we let microsoft win the console war, because no one will need a PS3. exclusive games are key to sales.
why own both systems if all the games are on both systems?
microsoft isn't quite saving gamers money though.. the HDDVD feature of the xbox is not built in.. if you buy that feature. then its the same price of a ps3 anyway.. also, why don't I see HDDVD's anywhere?

i think if the final fantasy xiii and other games were SHIPPED to the other consoles they wont be as great as only on the ps3 alone because of the lower CAPABILITIES of other consOles (DA AH ONLY THE PS3 SUPPORTS THE POWERFUL CELL AND RSX GRAPHICS CARD)SO THEY WONT HAVE BETTER PHYSICS AND GRAPHICS

I can't wait to play Dragon Quest on the Xbox 360!

The Xbox 360 versions of games always better than the Playstation 3 versions of third-party games. Playstation 3 versions don't even let you use a headset to talk online with voice-chat. It is awesome playing games from EA Sports and 2K Sports, and Call of Duty 3, and so many others on the Xbox 360, because they have better graphics, and they let you play online with Voice-Chat, but the Playstation 3 versions don't have a controller that rumbles, and the Playstation 3 versions don't let you have Voice-Chat when you play those games online.

And many games like Virtua Tennis 3, Tony Hawk Skater Project, 8, and Virtua Fighter 5 don't let you play online at all on the Playstation 3, while the Xbox 360 versions do let you play those games online.

JuliaRyder, you sound a little too obsessed with Final Fantasy. To buy a console solely for the purchase of one game is a pretty bad decision. Oh yeah, and Final Fantasy III for the DS is going to rock!

Microsoft owes it to loyal videogame consumers tomake sure that they have access to high profile games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

Why does everyone saying MS needs to give up Halo? I don't see Sony giving up any first party games so is there a reason MS should. To the idiots that don't know this Sony does not own Square-Enix. They are a 3rd party developer so they have the right to make there games on which system they want. I'm not going to say Sony sucks but developers are spending up to 20 million dollars to make a game for the PS3. So this is a good thing for games that Square-Enix makes but doesn't sell as well as FF. So, games like Star Ocean that doesnt sell as well as FFX they wouldn't have to pay $20 million to make it. So now Square-Enix can make it on the 360's specs and transfer the game to the PS3 and save them a lot of money. Fan boys I seen the trailer at E3 for FFXIII and it was for the PS3 and they did not say if it will or will not be X-Box 360.

  • Alphega111

    Posted May 29, 2006 12:36 am GMT

I like how all the Sony fanboys are crying about this. For the few hardcore gamers like me that will get all the system anyway; we get a good show from all the fanboys fighting. So keep up the work fanboys fight some more.

I cannot stand having to buy other systems just to have all FF titles! I had to do this with a gamecube, and do not care for any other gamecube games. I did it for FF Chronicles!!!

Oh man!!! I hope that Final Fantasy will stay with Sony only!!! I hate having to buy multiple game systems so that I can have EVERTHING FF !!!!! Come on Square, keep exclusively FF with Sony!!!!!

  • trekkerguy

This would be so great, I cannot stand Sony and Playstation but I love the FF series of games. I own an Xbox 360 and will be getting a Wii, and I have sworn never to touch a PoS3. So if it's not true I guess I will have to stick with Ninety-Nine-Nights and any FF games that come out on DS.

I think it should be a PS3 exclusive because I want it to be too much to handle for the 360 if thats possible

I feel like every system has their great exclusives. Nintendo with Mario, Metroid, and Zelda; Microsoft with Halo and Fable; Sony with a myriad of exclusives with one it's top being the FF series. Why can't we just keep some things exclusive?

Final Fantasy for 360, sweet. Now all we need is the Kingdom Hearts series and the Metal Gear Solid series to come to 360, and then there is no reason to buy PS3. That would be tight.

no no no no I don't care if they decide to release it on both consoles. As long as it doesn't become an xbox exclusive game I'm ok.
Plus I love MGS4 and I don't have the money to buy both systems

I've heard rumors like this since E3'05. I personally hope it false because the FF series has always been great because Square maxed out the system each FF was on. If they have to consider working in 2 different systems from the start, the game won't take advantange of either systems strengths

expect to see final fantasy 11 on ps3...they just phase out ps2 version the grapically update the game.

Hahahaha oh man the 360 is looking more attractive every single day. I have the system currently and its amazing and the games coming out just keep getting better and better and i'm just with anticipation.

It seems that all the excuses ps3 fanboys were using to separate the 2 systems are QUICKLY disappearing (hey i don't hate em i'm going to buy a ps3 too)

I'm sure that both games as stated here WILL be on the 360, which is looking like a beast right now with so many insane games being announced for it such as blue dragon, lost odyssey, enchant arm (i hear will be a killer), ninety nine nights. Now this i'm not sure if it'll happen, but i'm 100% sure it was said metal gear creator hideo kojima has stated he's deeply considering making metal gear 5 for the xbox360 and ONLY for the 360 because he has no plans to make another metal gear 4 for the 360.

Please, God, NO! XBox needs to die, and this isn't going to help. I'm praying that this doesn't happen... But just as long as SE doesn't start putting games exculsively on the 360, I won't do anything rash, like suicide, for example.

and you are so true rtchuli like i said i wouldn't fell the same way an no videogames aren't just videogames they are something else especialy Final Fantasy :p they are art, loook at the designs of some areas of final fantasy or the babilon of pop3(wen we say pop3 we say pop2 and 1 :p) games should be saw not as just videogames but its to have art in them. of course this is just my opinion.

  • VaryagPT

    Posted Dec 5, 2005 9:27 am GMT

for me games that have the tendency to be exclusive and then after a year or so losse interest for me. it doesn't fell the same thing you know? for example if they made the an FF for Xbox(especialy xbox) or nintendo it wouldn't fell the same way i think. I liked to play halo 2 and 1(didn't buy xbox a cusin of mine had it) but i think it should stay in the xbox and FF on PS it wouldn't fell the same thing if the hallo gone to ps3 and ff to xbox360, specially for the fans(dont like to call faboys cuz well im not a boy i have more that 18 so i not a boy and i think it's not a good word to call someone). I can say that i am a fan of the Ps for all the good games it have and its just sony, and the nintendo becouse i had great fun playng mario in my NES and other games, world cup and so on. Don't like xbox well becouse its microsoft. period. so yeah i think the main titles of FF should be on PS3 if they want to put a sequel for FFXII or online FF games on xbox then fine but the "TRUE" FF like 7,8,9,10, or 12 like that don't do it. i will ruin the game. so exclusive games need to exist.

  • iori666

    Posted Dec 5, 2005 7:33 am GMT

I agree that they need to keep it on one system. I think that a game being exclusive to one system gives it an extra point on the cool scale. Most of the games that are multiplatform or crappy low budget kid game type stuff. Im not saying there arent good multiplatform games though.I think it just makes them seem more important, like they can always tease people with the idea of moving to a diff platform, and get in the news again, but if they are on all platforms or multiple platforms, its just blah. That and at certain times of the day I am a PSfanboy/Nintenboy. (Never xbox)

I am not surprised with that. We are all living in a world where money is all that matters. People like me thinks that are living in a world of justice and all that dream thing but let's get to the obvious stuff; personally i'd rather play an exclusive Final Fantasy on a PS3 and see my Xbox addicted friend's anger than
see all my nerd fellows laughing in my face because they were right when they said "soon we will play Final Fantasy too on our consoles". It's always good to share, but i think the problem is that, like all the things in our life, when we choose an option something is left behind, every choice carries advantages and the opposite of that too. Let's face the truth, it's obvious that for Square Enix
it will b a good deal but is that sort of ideal spirit that drives us to like games like Final Fantasy. Are videogames only videogames? I hope i'm wrong and all this is just my frustration but let's wait to see the future and i hope they will always choose the best option for Both Of Us.

I am prepared to purchase a PS3 with the expectation that Square would eventually release their FF titles for it. I think it is fine if 3rd party companies release multiplatform games (as long as one of the platforms is the PC) since it delivers the game to a broader audience. I think, though, that developers should take the time to release games by platform in order to make a "best fit" version, and not just a quick-and-easy port (MGS was good multiplatform, and the recent PS2 release of RE4 is platform-specific). I'm not prepared, however, to spend upwards of $1000 for all three next-gen consoles just so I can have an "exclusive" game for each. I doubt more than the hardcore gamer contingent would.

If the Xbox 360's japanese launch is successful, then im pretty sure Square-enix will put this franchises on the PS3 and 360. But if the 360 dies in Japan as predicted by many analysts and shown on many surveys, then its more than likely that Square will stick to PS3. What i'm saying is the Japanese launch will decide if these games are exclusive or not.

Itīs a shame if FF games ends up on a trash Bill Arse Von Gaytes console just because of some damn money.

Actually that man should be sentenced to death for making the most unstable and rubbish software, and products in the world.

However.... Im sure that our little Japanies friends will win the battle of next gen consols......... again.

And to all you X-Box, PC fan gay boys and all you traitors who jumped on the 360 wagon because you didnt have balls to wait for PS3...... "Read my lips" !

X-box will always be in the shadow of Playstation because it have no soul.

PS... If you are a Xbox fanboy, and you cant handle what you read above..... Go back to the gamespot XBox 360 section and cry !
