Ghost Recon infiltrates UK chart

By Liam Edwards, Intern, GameSpot UK

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier knocks Max Payne from the top spot, with two other new entries also making it into the top four.

Last week was a fantastic week for new releases with three of the five new entries that hit the UK chart making it into the top four places. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier debuted at number one last week, with the latest entry in the long-running Tom Clancy series having the best first-week sales of any in the series to date according to UK sales tracking body Chart-Track. Future Soldier knocks high-selling, bullet-frantic Max Payne 3 from the top spot after just one week. Max Payne 3 suffered a 50 percent drop in sales after selling 3 million copies in its first week, but even with the drop in sales it found itself at number two.

There were also good debuts from both Dragon's Dogma and Dirt Showdown, with Capcom's brand-new Western-style RPG taking the third spot and Codemasters' latest entry into the popular Dirt franchise placing at number four.

The top 10 also featured EA's stalwarts, FIFA 12 and FIFA Street, at five and 10 respectively. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was able to place within the top 10 for a second week running, placing at seven. Last week also saw a big drop for Diablo III, with Blizzard’s PC title dropping from number two down to number nine in retail sales, after what Blizzard claimed was the biggest launch in PC history.

Nintendo's latest Mario spin-off, Mario Tennis Open for the 3DS, just missed out on the top 10 serving its way into the chart at number 11. PS3 exclusive Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, which has been met with some harsh criticism, debuted just inside the top 40 at number 34.

This week sees the release of Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita and the release of Max Payne 3 on PC. Could the sales of Max Payne 3 on PC this week see Rockstar’s latest creation back on top?

UK All-Formats Chart for the week ending 26 May 2012:

1. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
2. Max Payne 3
3. Dragon’s Dogma
4. Dirt Showdown
5. FIFA 12
6. Sniper Elite V2
7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
8. Prototype 2
9. Diablo III
10. FIFA Street

grove12345 Ppl seems to forget about Capcom policy on Disc Locked Content (DLC)s.

Well DD still have DLCs in the disc.

Ubisoft getting the top spot is a change of pace with the constant bickering of Diablo 3 vs Max Payne 3. I won't be surprised if AC3 would do the same on it's release, but i'm not counting on it that much.

Bought Max Payne full price, will be waiting for big discount before buying Ghost Recon. Says it all really.

chaosnovaxz8k 14 pts

mattcake Yeah, your personal opinion says it all, because everyone takes it to heart. I lol'd.

I think Ghost Recon Future Soldier is a much better shooter than Max Payne 3 so its good to see at least in the UK it was able to knock down MP3 for a week.

TheDudeman420 43 pts

brucecambell They really are very different types of games, you can't really compare them!

Mawy_Golomb 7 pts

brucecambell I have yet to play GRFS, but from the looks of the video walkthrough that GameSpot presented and the other videos showcasing its gameplay, this is another ruined entry in the Tom Clancy games. Gone are the times when you really have no idea where the enemy will attack from and where you would have to move slowly to stay alive. In FS, you simply stay invisible by not sprinting or not firing, and this gives you a very big upperhand on the enemy. If anything, it removes practically all the challenge that the game has to offer.

And a 7.5 out of 10 is just being generous, as is the Metacritic score of 80 out of 100. This game is way, way, way worse than that. Here I thought that you were about Ubisoft remaining true to the Tom Clancy games' core gameplay, especially after you complained about Splinter Cell: Conviction. But, apparently, I was mistaken.

I borrowed a copy of MW3 from my buddy, and holy crap is this game a noob paradise; I literally lost interest within minutes. Anyways, I'm still playing the crap out of Max payne 3.

godofwarbfcodfa starhawk is a weird game. it has some interesting thing about it but its just weird. ps3 has some weird exclusives. its weird in a cool way but sometimes you just have to wonder who they are marketing their games to.

alien33 10 pts

@Dreamcaseal @godofwarbfcodfa Dunno... Japanese?

CreMax90 34 pts

Dreamcaseal It's called being different. Starhawk is a kind of game where you need to know the game mechanics very well or you're gonna get screwed big time. Sadly, in today's market, people just want simple FPS that only does 'Move, Point, Shoot' and have a  "rewarding" multiplayer in every game they like. *Sigh*

y3ivan 57 pts

Dreamcaseal Starhawks isnt a weird or even unique. Its has the same principles of C&C; renegade 1999 made by the doomed westwood studios. A few devs tried to incooperated this ideas into the game with little success, game was great but sales were poor. Starhawk is a drastically streamline version of those great games to the casual FPS crowd that cant think more that blowing things up and how to be cool doing it.
