Up to six potential bloggers, not bad...

@BenBrocka That's pretty good, yes. I really don't have any time myself to put the work in to be a viable blogger sadly. That's not to say I won't contribute anything, but I just can't commit to anything regular (or even semi-regular).

Yeah, the biggest barrier to something like this is always going to be commitments. I'm guessing that most of us have jobs and other things going on in real life.

anyone for/against this change to the FAQ?

A: Is our FAQ text too exclusive?

Ben BrockaWe should change our FAQ's first section to read: User Experience - Stack Exchange is for User Experience Designers, Information Architects and Human Computer Interaction researchers. How's that for a first draft? Feel free to vote/comment

2:16 PM
Works for me.

For reference, here's DBA's list of blog commitments:

@dhmholley vote :P

@BenBrocka Yeah, I'm happy with that. We can always add in an image at a later date if anyone manages to come up with a good one.

...then someone vote on it

@BenBrocka Haha, oh yeah. D'oh!

2:36 PM
@BenBrocka voted +1 :)
Great to see Information Architects in the first section!

HCI too :P I had hoped to see more HCI people really. Plus CogSci could use some more people with a more formal background in psych
there's less overlap in users between UX and Cogsci than I would have hoped

Q: Why do many high-profile persons state today's date on answering machine greetings?

MattI'm undecided if it's a security thing or purely company requirement. Perhaps it's to serve as proof they actually showed up for work that day and didn't get taken hostage on the way past the front door.

Not really sure this is on-topic for this site.
But what do you all think?

I don't quite think so, not as-is
I guess it's a sort of interesting use though

I think if you're going to deviate from the typical IT-related UX issues you really need to provide a concise, detailed and researched question to get any benefit from this community. This reads like a 'this is a bit weird, what do you guys think' type question.

What is a "high profile person"

@Rahul That dude from Cheech and Chong?
No wait, I'm getting my imaginary-hypen in the wrong place there.
(sweet ass-car)
Ah, looks like he changed his mind about asking it here after all.

4:06 PM
Thoughts on this edit? ux.stackexchange.com/suggested-edits/1227 it's in good faith but metro wasn't directly asked for...
@JonW the power of downvotes

@BenBrocka Well, just the one.
@BenBrocka Yeah, I wasn't sure about that one. He doesn't seem affiliated with the link, and it does sort of enhance the answer, but does make the answer more off-topic.

Not like it was a great question to begin with

Really impressed with the new update for Bump iOS app. You can bump photo's from your iphone direct to your PC, no extra software needed on PC, just an internet connection.

5:04 PM
I'm looking for a resource of existing System Usability Scale study results to compare against. Would this be a proper UX question?
I've read in a few papers/webpages that plenty of such data is available, unfortunately I can't seem to find any immediately.
I could probably find separate papers with separate results, but I got the impression they were talking about databases.

1 hour later…
6:22 PM
@StevenJeuris well, you know I'm undecided...I guess you could just ask. I won't close it unless it gathers close votes/flags
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ MY WALL OF TEXT OH GOD WHY YOU NO READ

Lol :)
@BenBrocka Well it is already showing up in google results while I continue my search. :)

@BenBrocka @StevenJeuris I'm in doubt as well, and when I'm in doubt I don't cast close votes. This is close to "Example of" question, but not really. Let's see what answer we get on this...

Well my comment is the best I got so far ... I can always post that as an answer later on.
But I misread the paper a bit, it should be corrected. :)
It's out of 250 studies, not 12.
I did find one resource, a paper which lists some mean scores in rough categories, of which GUI is one which has an average of 76.2 out of 12 studies. I was hoping to look for something more specific. — Steven Jeuris 1 hour ago
@BenBrocka, care to fix?

6:37 PM
Done

@BenBrocka Thx.

No Smoking Sign Information Overflow?

@BenBrocka The good old days :-)

@BennySkogberg See, I thought it was okay to smoke only when the place was descending but not crashing. The signs have properly informed me otherwise

6:43 PM
@BenBrocka 'Searches', .. but where is the search box?

Gotta use the site search
Links, searches and tools, but never more than one on one page, you see
unless you get some frame-on-frame action going

@BenBrocka It really surprises me how computer user regulars fail to do that!
If I don't get any results out of the rest of my study, I could evaluate the effect of using side by side windows on performance. :)
... desastreus
... well, the lack of doing so at least.

Today I used this question to lecture my fellow SharePoint developers:

Q: Why shouldn't we use the word 'here' in a textlink

Paul OlyslagerOver the years of surfing on the web I have found numerous examples of people telling to not use the word "here" in a textlink. Personally I like the idea of using the word, because it is so straightforward for your visitors to know where to click. The only reason that I can truly think of is fo...

I saw the 'click here' and imediately knew what to do.

@BennySkogberg Awesome

It got good feedback and is now in our development backlog
@BenBrocka I felt very enlightend :-)

6:49 PM
It still bothers me that UX doesn't reference the papers they talk about that often. :-(
The answer all sounds reasonable, but I might just be interested in reading some actual studies about it.

Yeah, more source citing would be great

@StevenJeuris Papers are often hard to get if you're not in a university or is reluctant to use torrent

@BennySkogberg Papers are actually torrented? :)
You are right though, but still, often you can deduce a lot from the abstracts.

@StevenJeuris Some are, but not all. Especially papers used as reference on a univeristy course can be found in torrents, as well as books
So I've heard :)

Oh well, they should all be freely available.
That's one thing I never understood about science, why is it still so much dominated by funding and why isn't it entirely free?

6:56 PM
Open data is what we want

@StevenJeuris we need crowd funded science and much more open peer review....but science is dominated by the old ways of thinking in many ways
Moving the earth is easier than changing a publication process

@BenBrocka Crowd funded science should be easy, ... taxes.
But I'm guessing that already happens, as education (schools) do get money from taxes.

Government funding is hardly crowdsourced
Especially not in spirit, which is the major thing
I mean more like Kickstarter, not "Let's fund research to support our political opinions"
At least not government offical's opinions...

Well, but that just raises the question whether or not governments work as they should. :) Supposing they would .... :)
Kickstarter suffers from the same problems btw, only popular stuff gets funded.
Although in terms of e.g. game development that isn't an issue, I do find that to be an issue for research.
Research should be funded by importance, ... ROI, ...

7:12 PM
Allowing anyone to fund things isn't the same as making it so only popular things are funded
in fact it allows many unpopular things to get funding that wouldn't otherwise
Ugh XP and old microsoft products I hate you
"I know, let's make every product start with a wizard the first time!"
It's freaking clippy 2000
IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE TRYING TO INTERNET, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SET 500 SETTINGS?

:)
When you run my prototype, .. you see nothing....
:)
unless you have hidden tray icons disabled, otherwise all you see is a tray icon pop up there. :)
@BenBrocka (and others) speaking of which, anyone interested in trying out a virtual desktop-ish user interface?
Could still use additional testers.
Windows 7, my English manual isn't that extensive yet, but the prototype should be quite straight forward.

7:30 PM
I'm having a hard enough time with our software here to mess with more right now :P
I hate everyone involved with financial software
Except for the mint.com people
I made a room for the UX blog editing team (which is everyone involved in the blog):

 The Editing Room

Room for discussion of the UX blog and upcoming articles

8:02 PM
Apparently UX is an elephant? :P

1 hour later…
9:25 PM
This should be interesting. My company finally hired a UX architect (they were looking for someone with like 6 years experience, so I was out automatically, sadly). Should be interesting to see his perspectives...

1 hour later…
10:27 PM
@GotDibbs darn years of experience. None of these job listings seem to want a 22 year old with one year's experience as a programmer. Plus none of them are in this state

10:39 PM
@BenBrocka I'm still hoping to be able to help off load some of the work the new UX guy will be tackling and thus gain a bit more hands-on experience. But yeah, nobody here wants a 25 year old with 2 years experience as a developer/consultant either.

shrug I've still got a better job than most so I can't complain much yet, I'm just keeping my eye out for better

11:13 PM
@BenBrocka that's exactly the way I feel. I love my job and the environment bow, but it's just not exactly fulfilling as it could be because dev isn't my passion.

Same here

11:34 PM
eventually it'll happen and ill make the switch. Gotta remember patience is a bit of a virtue haha

@GotDibbs Patience hardly
inertia + comfort is making the effort required seem like a bit too much though

11:53 PM
Effort required for...making the switch?
