Today I babysat for a friend of mine. She has a 4 mo who is formula fed. I cannot get over how foul that stuff is. Formula smells going in and it smells coming out. My clothes still smell like stale milk. I breastfed my kids and I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone would think that THAT STUFF is better than breastmilk. I felt bad for the little baby.

Nobody thinks it's better. There's nothing wrong with it. Some people can't or don't want to nurse. BFD. It's a personal choice and women like you make very good women feel insecure and like failures. There's no need. I nursed and did both after returning to work. Kids are perfectly healthy & fine. Yes, it smells like ass - but perhaps so does breastmilk - you are just used to your own scent.

DS is the only formula fed baby in his playgroup of ~10. The other moms are a PITA like you and constantly told me how BF is the best, blah, blah, blah, and I must not care about him. Needless to say, my son rolled over first, sat up first, and started walking 3 months before any other BF baby did. I feel badly for your children. Very badly.

Try what they give, if there is no leakage (different diapers have different shape and some people have leakage issues) then stick with what works. If you do have leakage, mix it up. (One of my dc could wear Pampers Cruisers without a problem but the other ones he'd crap up the back all the time.)

When something might be harmful at the doses we often encounter, but then again it might not be, most of us opt to err on the conservative side. But that means we end up making our lives difficult for no reason in probably most of those cases. Microwaving plastic now and then isn't going to hurt you in the way that something like smoking does.

I also think a lot of health issues may eventually be traced to this. I'm not a big believer in organic food or no-sweets etc. but this seems to resonate with me. When I was a baby I drank from glass bottles, not plastic and with a rubber nipple, not plastic. Kids now have plastics in their body from day one .

Is there such a thing as a leak-proof sippy cup that's BPA free? This is for #3 (got rid of all the old plastic cups I used with first two). Have tried spouts for Born Free bottles (AWFUL--16 month old uses them as toys to see how much he can shake out); Think Baby; Zoli. All leak and/or are impossible to clean properly. TIA.

On vacation with MIL and SIL, MIL put dd pasta in microwave to reheat and I opened it to remove the saran wrap she left on the dish. MIL grabbed dish, slammed microwave and stormed out of the kitchen saying to SIL, "I can't do this, I shouldn't do that, I can't do this anymore and I've lost my appetite and am not eating dinner," MIL and SIL ganged up on me and SIL who I never see pointed her finger in my face while screaming that I don't appreciate anything my MIL does for dd. WTH

They get upset if their food appear diff. Some families won't want to eat the same thing FA child does (not that I'm saying they should). Too many times family who were on track with his issues forgot and put butter on things, cheese sprinkled, used the same spoon serving peanut butter and dipped it on his jelly etc. It's cross contamination issues. People get worked up/defensive over food, modifying recipes (what do you mean we can't put eggs in our meatloaf!? What's wrong with Sammi she can't eat that? ). You get the picture?

You HAVE to let DH handle it. We had minor issues, MIL and I, and they blew out of proportion because DH would NOT involve himself. MIL and I are now pretty much estranged. I don't she is a bad person but I do not want to reach out because I fear her reaction and smothering me with trying to control my life will be just as it was and not something I can handle. I entirely blame DH for not being involved, but this is his family and he should get involved if he wants us to have a good relationship. As it stands, DH and DC go visit ILs and talk to them on the phone once a week. Sad, but that is what it is.

you handled this poorly. instead of going behind MIL's back and making a passive aggressive comment (oops! we can't have THIS now, can we?!), which I am certain you have done many times before to evoke this kind of reaction, you should have let the food heat up, and if the saran wrap got into the food and made it inedible, address it then. but you were basically being controlling and preempting a situation that didn't really need your input. and you have now suffered the consequences. It's not your mil's fault that db had a prior allergic reaction. it could have easily happened on your watch. the fact that you think it wouldn't have means you feel superior, and that's probably coming out in lots of ways. gl to you.

Use a paper towel or microwave-safe plate as a cover. Otherwise you're ingesting chemicals that melt right into your food. FWIW... just went on vacation with my own mom, whom I adore and trust with DCs - but there were so many things I noticed this time. (I'd never noticed she doesn't use wipes front to back, for example.) I held back as much as I could, but there were lots of things (like that one) that I really felt I had to say something about. She exploded at me and we had the kind of fight we hadn't had since I was fifteen. I was so miserable. Happens in families sometimes, I guess.

Nanny here: just make sure she doesn't get too attached to one pacifier, because when that inevitably breaks all hell will break loose. My advice buy 10 of different varieties. switch them around. If you're lucky she won't develop a preference. If she does, stock up. When she's 1 you can ween her off outside of bed, when she's 2-3 ween her off all together. It's not a huge deal.

i don't understand Playmobil. too many tiny pieces for little kids, and by the time they are 8 and can play with something like the enormous, detailed pirate ship, aren't they then too old? any parents of 3 & 4 year olds want to sell me on Playmobil? the sets are beautiful but my kids will lose ALL the pieces.

Baby food: make or buy? We are introducing solids, DB is 6 mo old. I am so worried about GMO ingredients, BPA in packaging etc. Should we make food, is it a pain? Or are there some good brands people would recommend that are organic, no added sugar, no BPA packaging, etc? This is our first DB so I don't know if we are exaggerating...thanks!

Also, get some baby food storage containers and make a few bigger batches of things, then put them in the freezer. There are some like bigger ice cube trays and you can just pop out one serving for a meal and warm it up rather than making fresh every day

I used the blender, but I used to make big batches of various foods (carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, sometimes I'd mix them) and freeze a lot. I would cook either each weekend or every two weeks. I have an immersion blender now, so I'll use that when #2 is old enough for solid food.

Calm down - there are no BPAs used in baby food packaging. It's just veggies and water or fruit and water. Buy organic if you want to pay more and you worry about that stuff. Personally - we buy the happy tots brand pouches because they have good flavor combos (spinach/ pear/ mango) and stuff that my kids won't eat the real stuff yet - like spinach.. they're young. Also - they love the pouches and they're very convenient.

We love Plum organics, Sprout, Happy Baby/Tot and Earth's Best, although I tend to use the pouches for the most part rather than jars because I always taste everything I give db and the jars just taste like mush to me. Get a good babyfood cookbook too, I really like Annabel Karmel's various books on purees and first foods.

Many babies who eat jarred food grow up just fine so don't stress too much if you can't do it all. I use Earth's Best jarred foods from Target. I just buy single ones and use them when we go out on the weekends and when I don't have time to make meat. Whatever you buy just check the ingredients.

We generally make our own-if you have the time, it's really not that hard; we do it once a week, using only a blender,a masher, and ice cube trays--but don't feel bad if you can't. There are some really good organic brands---our baby has tried a few store-bought packages, and always keep a few on hand for emergencies. Our ds liked Plum Organics best. For organic baby food/packaging options, check out the Safe Mama website, and if you do decide to make your own, I swear by Wholesome baby food's website for everything-- foods by age group, recipes, etc.

I did a single veggie at a time, used a mini ice cream scooper to scoop into ice cube trays with a lid (silicone bottom for easy release), then popped them out and stored in a ziptop bag. To defrost, I would microwave 1 (or more) cubes until very hot, then stir to let it cool. As for cooking, just do one batch a day while making your dinner to start or supplement your supply of cubes...boil, roast or steam a veggie (e.g., butternut squash, peas, broccoli) & puree with a food mill. Very fine for babies new to solid foods, coarser for older babies. And for older babies who are ready for more texture, add other stuff...like a bit of cooked quinoa to squash. Other ideas: red lentils (soft and creamy), potato & leek puree, broccoli & potato, apple & pear sauce (or other freezable fruits). I was only working on this once a week, adding a new flavor a week, and it was relatively little effort. Flavors were remarkably better than store bought jarred foods (taste it and you'll understand...it's vile). And my kids now have very diverse palates compared to other kids. At age 2, they both started to be more picky, so I'm glad I introduced variety early on.

My uncle just brought a "cute" vinyl table cloth to our home to take to the family country house in a few months. It's a souvenir, produced heaven knows where. My hands feel sticky after handling it. The smell of plasticizers was gross. Some website says that PVC can release as many as 108 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, and "some of the chemicals were found in the air even 28 days after a PVC shower curtain was unwrapped and hung". It advises consumers to be careful when opening the packaging. I feel awful. I have opened the windows, got the table cloth out of here to a storage room, and scrubbed my hands several times. What else can I do? We would never, ever buy stuff like this, and I feel like throwing it away and risking a fight with my uncle. And how was I so stupid as to not wear gloves when handling it or letting it into the apartment in the first place?

nanny here: The family I work for has a twice a week house keeper, that keeps their place sparkling. I normally try and keep DC outside when they're there but yesterday we needed to go back for lunch so there was some overlap. I was amazed by how thoroughly they cleaned the house. I don't think I'm a slob, but she cleaned things I've never thought to clean in my life. When she was one by one removing each can from the pantry, wiping the can and the shelf before putting it back I asked: "do you do this in your own house, or just the houses you work in?" she said she did it in her own house every week. Have I been lying to myself about the cleanliness of my apartment, or is this as extreme as I think it is?

I don't use a system like fly lady, but after reading it, I have broken up some things like she does. The real key is to always put things back in their rightful spot when done using it and do one or two things every day so that you do not have to do it all on the weekends (or any one day that you designate) ie, regularly take out garbage, wipe down counter tops, etc.

They buy campbells tomato soup or cream of mushroom. When I think of cans I don't think of canned vegetables but for artichoke hearts. I make my own sauce bc I eat a lot of pasta. I actually buy paste in a squeeze tube bc I only use a tablespoon or so for each thing.

I do this every other month. I love the idea of C.L.E.A.N. since the thought of dirt nauseates me. The actual act of cleaning and clearing out clutter excites me, and afterward knowing that my house is absolutely clean calms me. I don't do as thorough a clean more often bec I don't actually think it's necessary.

- Way too expensive for something that you are only going to use for a couple of months. Steam food on the microwave or on the stove and buy a mini food processor for about $25-$30. I would invest in the silicone BPA free cube trays that prevent freezer burn and get freezer bags that prevent freezer burn....

For those of you that make baby food. How do you do it? Buy a Beaba baby cook? Or buy a steamer and immersion blender? Eventually I can just mush but at five months how do I start the purées?

Steam food on the microwave or on the stove and buy a mini food processor for about $25-$30. I would invest in the silicone BPA free cube trays that prevent freezer burn and get freezer bags that prevent freezer burn.

I'm doing this now for 6mo and I find the immersion blender the easiest. Only one part to clean with a quick rinse so it's easy to make a bunch of different "dishes" back to back. I love to make big batches and then freeze in ice cube trays. You can only make a small amount in the Bella thing.

The one thing is that steamer part is smaller than the mix/blender part (because there is a basket for the steamer part that makes it smaller) so it's actually easier to steam the food in a big pot then put it in the beaba which probably means you could just use a food processor or blender instead of the beaba. Otherwise I like it. It's just a little small so requires a number of batches and I have a little guy who's a big eater!

I'm thinking it will be okay and that these levels must have been there for a long time now and it's just coming ot light that it is over the limit if it was drinking water. But I also heard Newman's brand tested very low and that is the one we use
[ Reply | More ]12.01.11, 11:26 AM FlagA lot of peds just have a no juice policy not because of this apple juice thing, but bc of the study linking juice consumption to kids not growing optimally. And before you even say it, google it yourself. It was a big study a few years back and after it my ped came out 100% anti-juice except very rarely.
