After spending much of his time running the label Definitive Jux, alt-rap pioneer El-P has finally made the transition from executive back to recording artist, returning this week with Cancer for Cure, his first LP since 2007's I'll Sleep When You're Dead 80. Released on his new label Fat Possum, C4C features appearances by Killer Mike, Danny Brown, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, and Interpol's Paul Banks. El-P also is the producer for Killer Mike's own R.A.P. Music, which received stellar reviews upon its release last week.

Seven years after their last studio album (Bleed Like Me 56), Garbage have returned to take advantage of a recent wave of '90s nostalgia. The band’s new fifth album, Not Your Kind of People, finds singer Shirley Manson and band members Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker firmly embracing their alt-rock roots and their pop/industrial/electro sound as heard in lead single “Blood for Poppies” (video below). While some music fans are excited to have a chance to pick up some new Garbage, reviews are decidedly mixed so far, with some critics finding the disc dated and/or lacking enough solid tunes.

Gossip
A Joyful Noise LISTEN

While their subsequent albums have failed to capture the critical acclaim of their 2003 sophomore set Movement 81, Gossip have achieved some mainstream success with their recent recordings (especially in the UK), earning a major-label contract in the process. This week, Beth Ditto and company return with their first album in three years, recorded under the guidance of noted British pop producer Brian Higgins (Xenomania) after sessions with Mark Ronson didn't pan out. Unfortunately, critics don't seem to be liking the band's new dancefloor-friendly sound.

The long-running British pop group Saint Etienne are finally back with their first album since 2005’s strong Tales from Turnpike House 79. Words and Music by Saint Etienne is the band’s eighth album overall and once again features the lovely vocals of Sarah Cracknell and sophisticated pop music from Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. Prolific UK dance producer Richard X (Annie, Goldfrapp) lends a hand with the new album, which is out this week in the UK and will be released in the US (but only in digital formats) on May 29.

Recent artist and industry news

• Former chart-topper Donna Summer died last week at the age of 63 after a battle with cancer. The singer was best known for 1970s-era disco hits like "I Feel Love," "Bad Girls," and "Love to Love You Baby." The L.A. Times offers an obituary, Billboard runs down her 20 biggest hits (and asks why she isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), while Rolling Stone opines on her best songs.
• Robin Gibb of Bee Gees fame also died this weekend after his own struggle with cancer. The singer, one of three members of one of the most commercially successful pop groups of all time (with over 200 million records sold worldwide), was 62. Rolling Stone looks at some of his best recorded moments, while the L.A. Times has an appreciation of his career.
• Former Crowded House drummer Peter Jones has also died; he was 45. - Billboard
• Adele continues to roll, collecting a dozen victories at this year's Billboard Music Awards, held over the weekend.
• Indie duo Handsome Furs, a side project for Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner, have disbanded. - Spin

Tours and festivals

• Next year's Coachella festival will be held the weekends of April 12-14 and April 19-21, 2013; advance passes went on sale last week and quickly sold out, though more will go on sale next year.
• The Jay-Z curated Made in America festival will take place in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend; acts other than Jay-Z have not been announced, though tickets will go on sale Wednesday.
• The hip-hop-intensive Rock the Bells festival will take place in three locations this summer: San Bernardino, California (August 18-19), Mountain View, California (August 25-26), and Holmdel, New Jersey (September 1-2). The lineup, announced last week, includes Missy Elliott + Timbaland, Kid Cudi, Nas, Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Atmosphere, Deltron 3030, and many more; details at the official site.
• The full schedule for June's Bonnaroo festival was announced last week.
