RIM appoints Kristian Tear as new COO, Frank Boulben as new CMO

Kristian Tear RIM COO

The transition to new leadership at RIM continues — the company has just announced new chief operating officer Kristian Tear (pictured above) and new chief marketing officer Frank Boulben. Tear comes to RIM from Sony Mobile, where he most recently worked as executive VP, while Boulben is a former executive VP at LightSquared. Tear fills a void left when former COO Thorstein Heins took the...

Chat app Viber releases Windows Phone and BlackBerry betas, but no voice calls for now

Viber Windows Phone

Popular voice and text chat app Viber has expanded to BlackBerry and Windows Phone. The app offers free HD voice calling and text messaging over 3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi in its iOS and Android incarnations and has gained over 69 million users to date. However, neither Windows Phone nor BlackBerry users will be able to make voice calls with the current beta versions of the app, which are restricted to text and photo messaging right now. Viber promises that full releases will come when they "meet Viber's quality standards." We certainly hope so — without voice chat it seems unlikely the app will topple BBM on BlackBerry, and Skype could use a competitor on Windows Phone following its underwhelming launch. You can get the Viber beta from BlackBerry App World or the Windows Phone Marketplace now.

BlackBerry 10 devices with physical keyboards to get word-prediction technology

BlackBerry 10

One of the highlights of today's BlackBerry World keynote was RIM's take on the touchscreen keyboard, complete with word prediction, the ability to automatically personalize key targets for "fat thumb" syndrome, and even (as TechCrunch reports) personal language analysis for better predictions. Those are all features that sound like SwiftKey to our minds, a hint borne out by the fact that CrackBerry discovered that the PlayBook's text prediction algorithm returns the names of SwiftKey...

RIM confirms it licensed BlackBerry 10 camera timeline features from Scalado

via assets.sbnation.com

When we got our first look at BlackBerry 10 earlier this week, we were impressed with the new camera, which lets you scrub through a timeline to fix a blinking subject or other imperfection. Apparently we weren't the only ones, and a little work by TechCrunch revealed that the tool was very similar to one by Swedish camera company Scalado. Now, RIM has confirmed that Scalado, whose "Remove" system we tried out in February, is licensing its...

RIM CEO confirms there's no upgrade path from BlackBerry 7 to 10

BlackBerry leather

We've seen and heard a lot about BlackBerry 10 this week, but if you're a BlackBerry owner excited about the new OS, you're going to have to get ready to invest in a new handset: RIM CEO Thorsten Heins confirmed once again this morning that the company has no upgrade path for existing BlackBerry 7 devices. In fact, the two seemed destined to co-exist: Heins spoke about the new BlackBerry 9220 (and confirmed the existence of the 9320), using...
