News: Project H.A.M.M.E.R. Canned

Nintendo's Wii hammer-em-up is confirmed to be cancelled.

The latest issue of Japanese weekly gaming bible Famitsu confirmed what many gamers had feared - that Nintendo's Project H.A.M.M.E.R. will not be seeing a release any time soon... or indeed, ever.

The title had originally been announced at E3 2006, where a demo of the title let gamers play as a half-man, half-machine, wielding a hugely powerful hammer which was to be used against waves of killer robots, hellbent on attacking major cities across the United States.

Since then, all became very quiet on the game, until at this year's E3, Nintendo of America's Beth Llewellyn stated its development had been "paused", with the possibility of it resuming at a later date. It now seems that this is unlikely to be the case, with Famitsu's report seeming to be the last nail... hammered into the coffin.

I think it must have been cancelled since last month. I just flicked through this month's and last month's copy of ONM to find the release dates, Issue 20 had it listed as TBC, but it wasn't there this month...

I hope Disaster hasn't been cancelled aswell.. I was really looking forwards to it :(

@ Arab_freak

Disaster is still very much in development. In game shots were revealed awhile back now but as far as I'm aware, its still being worked on. What else are Monolith Soft gonna be working on? A localisation of Baten Kaitos Origins for europe? Dont think so.

Bugger. Nintendo could use some new first party IP that's a bit more mature than Zelda and Mario.
I'm not saying those latter two are childish or shallow, but among the more hardcore gamers it would do Nintendo's image good if they'd release some first party games that are more mature and aggressive.

Nah. It's still officially happening according to Nintendo UK. NoJ probably haven't told them yet.

"I bet Disaster: Day Of Crisis met the same fate."

Nintendo buying the company working on the game is a good sign that it'll be released.

"Project H.A.M.M.E.R." - crap name

"half-man, half-machine, wielding a hugely powerful hammer which was to be used against waves of killer robots, hellbent on attacking major cities across the United States." - pitifully crap idea, how much mileage can you get out of running around swiping a hammer at robots? not much I'm guessing.

"Bugger. Nintendo could use some new first party IP that's a bit more mature than Zelda and Mario." - what exactly is mature about playing some dude with a massive hammer for a fist?

The whole concept sounded completely rubbish to me, so personally I'm glad the big N will be putting their resources into developing something more worthwhile, be it a new franchise or an old one.

Good, they can stop wasting their time on it and put more effort into making Disaster.

To be honest, I have been expecting this for a long time and I'm not at all shocked to hear that it is now cancelled. Disaster is a different story though, I think it looked promising and I would hope that it is still on it's way..

Damn :( One of the games I really looked forward to to the Wii. But with the quietness on the whole game, I was too expecting this... the canning...!

Hope Crisis will get a release...

I'm glad it got canned. Didn't think it looked that good tbh, and it would defintley get repetitive. I just hope Disaster has not met the same fate..

Its a shame, i was really looking forward to seeing how this one shaped up, it looked great to me for some simple arcade action. Maybe they will use the game in some form as part of a new project...

I don't think its canned.

I was looking at other websites who got this news... more directly... reported it, and they it was only suggested it had been cancelled.

But its been reported as news across the internet, so it probably is official...

But I still hold some reservations.

Wouldn't that be something? :)
Still want to play that game, but now the freeloader is disabled on the wii...

But of course. The game play would have been repetitive. Shame, it seems the developer was more focused on showing off the consoles motion control, instead of making a game that could of been great.

Hmm, what they had shown from it so far didn't look great, but I'd have really liked to see Nintendo's take on a game like that. Who knows, it might've achieved what Malice didn't.

I'm astonished that some people are actually glad at this news. It's never good news that a game gets shelved, especially one whose demo showed such promise. Still, when one door closes, another will open, and now NST is free again, a Wave Race Wii looks more likely. That or MP:H2

@DaftVice

NST did H.A.M.M.E.R.
Monolith Soft are doing Disaster. They don't affect eachother

A while ago, I thought this was coming. Critics often say the Wii would tire you out etc.. I disagreed with them except when it came to this game. The nature of it is to swing and hammer.. It seemed like that was the main/only attack and it would take some effort to do so and thus I believed that unless some things were changed, it would become repetitive and tiring. Knowing Nintendo, they will incorporate those ideas etc into a different game in a limited capacity. I'm not glad it's happened but it makes sense to me.

Actually, I liked the idea of the game but I did notice at Wii's Japan launch their was a Gundam game that was released with similar mechanics. The little robot would walk aroung with a hammer smashing other robots... I think that they were planning to eventually release the Gundam game to other territories. So it may be that Nintendo didn't want to step on the 3rd parties toes for a game they weren't sure about from the beginning.

Also the game may have been created just as a tech- demo for the 3rd parties. And also to show us something more real and less... brightly colored. Not that I mind bright colors, cell-shading, or cartoon- like characters but the developers and the media sometimes have a bias against them.

I think also that the game was created to show another way Nintendo could change for this Next Gen. but now they know from Wii Play and Sports that the style of their games doesn't need to change. So they are going to leave the more realistic- gritty graphics to the 3rd parties.

Exactly. But perhaps when the freeloader disc for the Wii is released in the future, it'll support not only Wii games but GC games. I p[layed the first one through and loved it and couldn't understand why Europe didn't get Origins. It just baffled me. Perhaps they are working on releasing it on Wii in europe.

This game as a whole along with its underlying concept was tripe. No worthiness what so ever to even warrant a release, it wouldn't have ever standed a chance of being a multi million seller, so its no big deal this game is no more...

Games like Okami and Global Defence Force never stood a chance of being multi-million sellers either, but the world woud be a much duller place without them...
Ganepark32 Says:

Exactly. Although the world and the games industry's consumers must be in a sorry state when they pass Okami by to buy Little Britain the Videogame instead of it.
